I figured it’s always fun to post our little secrets in a group who knows the ins and outs of doll collecting. One for me: I use my 3 year old daughter as an excuse to buy adorable tiny toys so that I can later use them as props for my dolls. She has WAY too many toys now.
oboy. When I get a tax return, at least a tiny percentage of it goes to dolls. Every year. This year I was mature and put both my return and relief check into savings and bills.... and towards a downpayment on a Twigling Elbe.
After years of school, I finaly got a permenent full time job, and blew a huge chunk of my first pay check on a new doll....then told my husbend my first check was smaller because I worked less days.....
I haven't told my bjd collecting friend how many dolls I really own because I'm a tiny bit ashamed by the amount of money that went in to them. Also, I used to complain about money being tight at one point, so I feel guilty for complaining when it was my own fault. (I've never been in a really bad financial situation, so luckily I've bought dolls only when I could afford to pay my bills as well.)
I could have bought a new fully loaded mid-sized SUV with what I have spent on dolls. Shh don't tell my husband!
I've spent way too much on dolls this year... I don't want to think about how much I've spent. It's kind of gotten out of hand. xD I think the delays in shipping have made things worse, because I've been wanting to buy doll things just to get SOMETHING in the mail since most of the dolls I've ordered are still not ready... I need to reevaluate my doll budgeting, for sure. Only my second year in the hobby, and I'm already at this point. =P
I am thinking of getting a smaller bed so I can have a floor to ceiling shelf unit for all my dolls and figures, but I keep spending all my money on things i dont need.
My confession is that I got 7 dolls this year, a body, and a head, but I only paid for the body, head, and two dolls. Two were trades (first I traded a body for, then I traded that doll for another doll with a friend), 1 was a gift, 1 was a gift ordered the previous year, and 1 was an unexpected replacement for a doll I didn't need replaced (she had arrived with the wrong bust and a broken finger, but the company took so long to recast those parts they just sent me a whole new doll for the price of shipping).... The worst part is, I am thirsting for ordering more resin, but I know I shouldn't. I got too much already and the set up is full. Plus with being the only one with a steady income in the household currently, I cannot spend frivolously (doesn't mean that I don't want to).
I just started this hobby with a pre-ordered doll and then pre-ordered another ....and then put 2 tinies on lay-away. Meanwhile while waiting for the dolls, I have been on etsy and other sites buying wigs and clothing and I finally had to make lists of all the things I bought so I don't duplicate. Oh and I have decided to try to craft my own eyes so I bought supplies for that.
I know - I'm only 2 weeks into the hobby and the waiting for my 4 dolls is driving me to buy stuff for them!
I did this too - only I started when I found out I was pregnant with a girl. By the time she was 3, She had about 6 really nice, expensive dolls. The joke was on me. She never liked dolls at all. Loved stuffed animals, but not dolls. I think that is what started me down this road: The realization that it was me who loved dolls!
Hah! I love all of these! I’m in the exact same boat with you all. I’ve spent too much money this year and EVERY time I have more in the bank, I either buy a doll or something for them (wigs, clothes, eyes). I feel like I am never satisfied and it makes me super restless! I also hide my purchases from my husband. If he only knew...
I feel like my collection is getting a little big, but I'm currently waiting for two tinies and my first mini. And I'm hoping to order another tiny this month. I also avoid telling my family until I get a shipping notice.
I must admit that I really avoid telling my husband. He just doesn’t get it! I tend to put birthday and holiday gift money onto visa gift cards so the stuff doesn’t show up on bills. It’s my money but I just don’t want to deal with the eye roll!
I'm accidentally wrecking my credit over a doll. I dont know why its like this because its only the available balance, I pay all payments ahead of if not on time, but I haven't had credit for too long I guess so thats probably part of it.
I've been in a doll layaway for every month this year...I have to reign it in for 2021 this is ridiculous Lol
I went to target and bought 62 dollars worth of tiny doll props for my dolls and if they ask me who I’m buying for, I use my 5 year old niece as an excuse
so there’s this brand called My Journey I believe and they’re basically like American girl doll items, I have two Sd dolls and the items fit perfectly! They have horses, lockers, bath set, pet sets and about anything you can think of. I got super creative and if you don’t mind the part that it’s for those specific dolls, it’s pretty great! You can PM me if you’d like to see the items I got
Oh no...Good bye wallet... Thank you! I would love to see the items, so I shall a PM right after this.
I have 850$ worth of doll clothes and accessories in my cart.... and every day it gets more and more difficult not to just press "place order from all sellers" also I said "this year no more dolls until I sell my 2 SD and my 4 SD heads" and yet my new MSD is sitting comfortably beside me... she arrived yesterday... it's has been only 3 weeks into the new year.....
I forgot how many dolls I have on order. After saying no more for this year I ended up buying another!
Everytime im in a craft store, I always graviate towards the miniature section. The impulse gets worse if I find myself in a hobby lobby (I try not going there due to ideology but sometimes I still find myself there. If only micheals sold some doll stuff)
Wtf are you talking about? That's cute af! I've been considering doing that whenever I get mine. There is just something about bedtime that makes my love for dolls highten
Everytime I go to thrift store I manly look stuff just for my bjds. I scan everything which would be perfect scale and aesthetic. Few days ago I bought a small cabinet and a cashier working there told that it will be cute nightstand. I was just smiling and in my mind thinking yup, super cute for my dolls.
I know what you mean! My husband banned me from Hobby Lobby - with me, it was the painting supply for face-up materials. Now I get to buy from Blick! Much more of a selection and I get to feel no remorse from the cost because he insisted!
In 2020 I bought two 1/4 bodies, two 1/8 dolls, two 1/6 dolls, two 1/4 dolls, and a 1/4 head. I said I'd practice restraint next year. So far in 2021 I've bought three 1/4 dolls, a 1/4 body, 1/4 head, three 1/3 dolls, and a 1/3 body.
I wasn't going to buy any dolls this year, just send blank heads out for faceups. Yeah, that resolution didn't last long...
I was supposed to cut my collection down to just ten dolls. So far I’ve sold one, and added 3. And I keep finding loopholes for why a doll doesn’t count towards the 10 limit…. It was a gift, it’s a tiny, no that one belongs to my one year old daughter :P
Me? I get so freaked out inside about medical things, I started carrying one of my dolls during big visits. One year one was waiting with me before a surgery. Anxiety isn't my best friend, but my dolls can always be there when I need them. No one said a word about it at all. I was completely calm on the outside. Each one means something so I attach before I even usually get one if I know who they'll be (I've had the occasional oopsies that don't fit and it sucks as I feel bad & I miss the ones I didn't want to sell but had to). I've had people tell me I'm nuts for getting upset if I missed a grail on the secondhand market, but that's fine. I'll be crazy doll lady. They are meaningful and I don't see it as a bad thing.
My confession is that it has been almost a year since I joined the hobby. I own over 20 doll heads and 5 full doll (ranging from msd to uncle). My first full doll was $1600, and I bought my second doll in the same month. I also spend a part of almost every paycheck to get wigs, eyes and outfits. I also bought face up materials but only ever attempted one faceup. On the positive side, my dolls are what gets me out of bed each morning and stay at a workplace I would otherwise quit. They spark my creative side and keep me company while I do art, and have inspired me to begin writing a book.
I constantly look and try making other things into bjd things like niknaks. I now have so many bags and boxes together so when I can build the diorama of my dreams all of it will be on display.
