Bizarre occurnace. Straining pastels? Watercolor pencils?

Apr 28, 2005

    1. I recently did a face-up on my R-01 head. Since it was more of practive run until I get some supplies (aka: getting more colors), I took it off.

Most of the time the pastels (Primsacolor Nupastels) I use quickly come off. However it seems that this time is decided to stay there. I tried my best to get all off (I scrub like no tomorrow for about 8 hours) but it never came off.

Meanwhile the watercolor pencils I use were causing me a headache since they decide to not come off as well. I use Derwent watercolor pencils before on an earlier face-up and I hated how I couldn't really get anything off without killing myself. So when I finally got it off I switch with Primsacolor watercolor pencils. However the Prismacolor watercolor pencils decided to hate me too. They stayed on the head no matter how hard, even after 12 hours of trying to getting them off with the Cleaning Sponge, eraser, acetone, and toothpaste. It only faded.... a little (it was the toothpaste that helped).

I ended up sanding his face.

So why the heck are those straining him? I heard they would the safe ones.
If this happens again, what should I try before sanding?
Any suggest that I could do to try to have this not happen again.
Any other good products out there (pastel and watercolor only-I have Liquidtex acrylics at home)?

I hope someone will atleast help me on one of those problems I'm having. :(

    2. Maybe it's the resin used to cast the RML head? Also, did you put MSC on before doing the face up?

    3. Sadly I didn't have MSC at the time (time="tuesday"). Though for sure this weekend I will some Testors until I order some Mr. Superclear. Ah, my life of being impatient and having no money (or credit card for that matter). --;

Right now I think it's the resin too. though I really don't understand. I going to see if regular Prismacolors will be good.

    4. The black Derwent pencils stain even with Testors. I'm not sure about Prismacolor... Pastels and light watercolor pencils seem to stain and smear if even a little oil from your hands gets on the doll, so make sure you wash your hands and the head really well.

    5. That's odd. :? I used Derwent watercolor pencil in black on an MSC-ed face and when I messed up, it wiped right off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Then again, there was a very faint gray spot left on one place. (I painted over it again, so it didn't matter, but still.)

Maybe I should take a hint and invest in some Prismacolors? Shame... I thought the Derwent pencils were rather nice!

In any case, I think you should be mostly okay if you do multiple coats of your fixative spray before using the pencils, and scrub them off with soap on a wet cotton swab or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser if you make a mistake. (Don't scrub too hard with the latter, or you may take the coating off.)

    6. Actually Prismacolor Watercolor pencils did more damage on my head than Derwent did.

I have idea what happen really. Probably just a snafu. I'm going to see if it happens again.

I'm more irrated by the pastel than watercolor pencils. - -

    7. Yikes! O_O You did get it all off, right? :o

I wish I knew what brand of pastels I was using right now, so I could recommend them. They're just cheapies that I nabbed from Michael's, but damned if they don't work beautifully. And they've never stained... just a soapy cotton swab and it all comes right off. Yayyy! Ooh, wait, I just found them. Alphacolor Pastels. They work great! Here's a link to their section on dickblick.com. Nice and cheap, and they've got a great color selection.

      Good luck getting your faceup troubles sorted. I'll be sending well wishes in the field of non-staining. ^^;

    8. I was going to suggest the skin oil theory, too. The pigment mixed with oils could cause staining on the bare resin.

I have an R-01 also and I used nuPastels on him with no staining. I use nuPastels on almost every faceup I do and haven't yet had a problem with them.

    9. Be careful with the sanding.
Leechy sanded a ggoma delf a while ago and then tried to dye his skin. Where he was sanded, the resin was dyed much darker.
Perhaps after sanding his face is rougher and there are more places for the color to sit? Make sure you use very fine grain sandpapers to smooth the skin.

Other than that, I don't know.
      But goodl uck!

    10. That's a bit odd for me, since I wash my hand constantly and I washed him as well.

*sigh* I think I'll just be more careful with my hands next time.

Thanks for everyone who replied! =)

    11. Maybe Ashar is being difficult with you on purpose XD

I use the Alphacolor Pastels too, and they work just fine! I think it stained because there was no base coating on the face.

I use normal Prismacolor pencils and they work just fine. In fact, I can just erase them off the face, but I only used them to sketch out the eyebrows and then painted over them. Maybe try erasing the colored pencil? :?

    12. I just wanted to comment, that those are the same pastels I have too. I even scrubbed them off of a Delf head over the weekend, and they came off no problem.

Good luck next time you do a faceup!

    13. I think it's mostly the resin on RML heads. I heard somewhere that tiny bubbles appear after you sand it, so definitely not the best quality.

    14. (Haven't checked this thread in a while).

I justed tested another pastel color and it seems that it was just the color pastel that was being hard on me (the other one I tried went off fairly easily.)

So, be warned of Nupastel color 383.

I guess I need to find a new color for gothic mauve shade. :(
