@kurogane - I'll definitely be sharing photos of the wig once it resembles something less like the alpaca it was shorn off. It's been incredibly fiddly to make, I'm more used to making SD sized wigs, but it's certainly been an interesting project.
Well it's a double post so hopefully because it's been a couple of days it'll be ok, ta-da! WP_20180530_14_37_54_Pro by Liz, on Flickr
Thanks guys! He's feeling rather smug about all this attention now. I can't wait for his proper eyes and clothes to arrive. So glad I was able to clear out a bunch of unused stuff otherwise he'd be in that kimono for a very long time.
@Quiet and Insane yeah, *giggles. I’ve done the same with my guys. I hate to admit, one of them is still in a Kimono, waiting...
Kimonos are such great emergency doll clothes. So are togas. Though it's a bit too cold for togas at the moment, so I'm sure Spade appreciates the sleeves.
I love the Kimono. Spade is lucky. My guys just stay naked til I get or make them clothes...we have no shame in this house. LOL
Mine do too on occasion, but now that it's winter I hate the idea of seeing people/dolls wearing little to nothing. Makes me feel cold too! At least I don't have to worry about buying him underwear!
My dolls are in basement so cooler in summer, but not very warm in winter, so I always feel my gang should be dressed according to temps in room. So everyone had to wear double layers come winter, and of course if a naked doll arrives and no clothes I have lots of baby blankets to put on them if not summer. Plus mainly guys here so got to keep them decent.
Oh no, I’m a bad dolly momma! My dolls wear the same outfit all year. It’s a blizzard outside? Nice shorts and T shirt on half the crew. Wearing a leather jacket when it’s 100f, oh well. At least they have clothes....and shoes...
I've got a few knitted blankets for my guys too! Though I couldn't care less if their junk was on show. Means it deters other people from coming into my room (because I get no privacy whatsoever in this house).
It's just hubby and I so it would be okay, I just feel better if they are protected. When son had to sleep in the old doll room, he would insist they have their heads covered, as it creeped him out to sleep in room.
@Quiet and Insane That wig is awesome! You did a great job. I used to dress my dolls according to the seasons but I gave up after a while. Belgian weather can be so unpredictable. We'll have warm, sunny weather one day and then rain showers the next day.
Thank you @Eiko82! Sounds like Melbourne weather, only we get four seasons in one day. Generally I dress my dolls for the type of weather they'd be dressing for (some characters like hot weather, some prefer cold, etc). Spade's definitely an all terrain character. He's a geologist, so he'll be out rain, hail, or shine; sunhat, jeans and muddy boots are a staple whatever the weather!
I love Spade the more pictures of him I see. I'd love to have a full crew of these guys (and girl) one day. I recently received a Steve secondhand, and while at some point I want to sand him and mess around with the stringing at some point, it was great being able to play with him right away since he was already assembled. The vinyl wig is great, but I had the wherewithal this weekend to try making a hardcap wig to give some options. It came out way too bulky, but he's fun to craft for so I don't mind trying again.
Congrats, and look forward to seeing how you finish this guy. Getting the whole crew is an awesome goal. If you join Donn's Patreon you can more easily afford it happening if you don't mind only getting one finished or two kits over one year. Depends on what package you go for.
May have just picked up some more faceplates for my Vince since they were in stock on the website for the first time in forever. (Despite swearing to myself that the current body on Layaway was the last bjd related purchase for the year. Ahem.) Still, looking forward to the extra expressions he'll be able to pull! How many faceplates were made for Vince anyway? Counting the ones that should be coming, my guy now has five. Were there more? I know it was less than Steve's multitude!
Donn keeps saying once he's caught up with orders he wants to work on more expressions for the later gang. Like you said @Vetinari Steve has loads, although I would love all to have a sleeping face plate like Mira and the guys to have more happy expressions. Vince has five as far as I know. As does Mira, but Nails has six I think.
Ooh yes, I'd love a sleeping face plate for Spade! I already have three dolls with extra sleeping faces and I want more!!
@animemom thanks for the info! I'll have to check that out. @Quiet and Insane Thank you! It's made from some of that velour-textured yarn for blankets and such. It's very soft, lol. aerneth, yes, it is! I'm kind of loving it for the texture , but I got the "dreads" way too close together. XD
Ooh thanks for the info, and confirmation on the number of Vince faceplates! That's cool news about the possibility that there might be more on their way at some point down the road (I'd love my Vince to have a 'drunk' plate like Steve's one).
@animemom and you are right, He has five faceplates =D Steve has 18. 14 ones in the shor, then there are 4 faceplates that were patreon exclusive. (Two no shave November and two Burtonesque October ones.) How do you guys store your faceplates? I like to keep mine in these fishing tackle/beading boxes. I made stickers for them too. =D I'd really love to collect all of their faceplates, I know I'm missing a sleeping Mira from her initial preorder though. I would LOVE for all of Donn's dolls to have sleeping faceplates!
Oh that's such a neat idea @P-Aei! I only have the two faceplates for Spade (so far) but this'll b pretty useful to remember should I end up with more.
Loving the extra face plates @P-Aei, you have done an amazing job of face upping them all! And the stickers are so funny! My Vince is currently undergoing a makeover. I thought he needed some love, so I’ve been working on his updated look. I’m being indulgent and let him try on Spade’s wig, and love it! Next I’m going to make a fancy Kimono so Vince can cosplay the calculating, but sophisticated villains in one of my favorite mangas.
Ooh loving your solution with the faceplates! In my case the issue hadn't yet come up, my Vince was one of the kit dolls so the face-plate he wasn't currently using generally gets kept in the teeny tiny tupperware-esque box it came inside.
@P-Aei I did something like that as well, but since down to just Steve/Eddie gave my daughter my extra cases.
Sorry about that, cleared out now! I love the little Tupperware boxes the face plates come in! I've used them for all kinds of stuff. My mom loves to use them for beads. @kurogane what villian? 8)
@P-Aei Yeah they are great when I take Eddie on vacations that require different emotions. It was hard when we went to Disney World to limit him to one face a day, but I had to be careful as didn't want to lose one or more. Bad enough we lost a lightsaber.
Is this normal? I bought my Nails two years ago and never paid much attention to the faceplate. Anyways, with the sad, pouty face, I noticed that there is a big gap between the faceplate and the headpiece. All the faceplates have this to some degree. But this faceplate doesn't fit at all. If I put on the hairpiece, there is a small gap. If I take it off, there is a huge gap. I can push the chin back but it just flips back in this position.
@Eiko82 What you have is just a change in shape. If the doll has been in a hot situation and face plate had pressure on sides it will change fit. You need to get a hair blower set on a low heat and soften the resin so it can fit on head back properly. You will need to wear hand protection or use some kind of wooden tongs to hold plate while you heat it up. Once face plate fits properly again dip in cold water to set it's shape. Do a bit at a time as you don't want to make resin to soft you just want it to spread a bit.
I had the same issue with one of my Spade faceplates. I fixed it by altering the shape of the face plate and head back with sculpey. Because my guy has a fibre wig rather than the resin one I'm not too fussed about what the resin looks like underneath even if I did paint over it. Probably not what you were going for in the way of advice, but just letting you know this is an option.
@Eiko82 same thing happened to my Steve when I left him in a warm car, you can heat it up and bend it back like said above. =D
Hmm, my Spade is still using his original elastic. Perhaps ask Donn where he gets it? I'm not in the USA so I might not be able to help more than that.
I actually used some black elastic (shock cord) from a local store for my Nails. No idea what size it is. I was winging it. lol Works fine.
It's so quiet in here! My Spade and Nails are just chilling in the Our Generation Beach House with an Iple pet cat (plus a hamster and hedgehog from Wal-Mart's My Life As line of doll accessories). Bishonen House boys Spade and Nails, with Iple pet cat by aernath, on Flickr
@aernath Oooo, that's a great room box! I haven't finished modding him yet but I technically now have a Spade...(soon to be someone very much NOT Spade) and I'm bloody pleased with him. The sculpting is so different from my other MSDs.
What a great room @aernath! My Spade is still chilling out on the bookshelf, lording over my SDs. I need to start painting up all of his other faceplates now that I have eyes for them. Though I'm due to be moving into my new house in a month or two and I don't really want to be starting any new projects while I'm trying to sort things out and pack.
Congratulations! I hope the move goes well! No matter how near or far, moving is always such a stressful hassle. Keep an eye out for toy sales. I got the beach house for a decent price on sale at Target. It has a lot of fun features like the kettle whistles, and the stove ticks and dings....heh heh, actual bells and whistles! The sink makes a garbage disposal noise, and there are some lights in the roof! Not to mention it comes with a crap-ton of prop food.
Thanks! According to the most recent letter from the builders uh...we might even be ready to move in by the end of this month! I feel so unprepared!! That said, I'm heading out to a doll-friend's place tomorrow (hopefully...not feeling the best at the moment but we'll see how the pain is tomorrow morning) and I've decided to take Spade with me. He doesn't come out often, but he mot definitely should given his sense of adventure. I'd love to take some new photos of him to share That's awesome! I'll have to keep a look out when there are toy sales on. Thank you for the tip!
@P-Aei SHHHH, you'll encourage the shouting! It's Starscream, not Starwhisper! But ask and ye shall have spam. (God I love his stupid face! The FUA did a fantastic job) Bonus pic of Screamer playing *AHEM* Recreating strategic battles with his scale models. Spoiler
He makes me smile! And after restringing I've figured out how to get him to hold stable poses. I need to get on with his other faceplates thought.
I've found Donn's little guys are pretty good at posing once you figure them out. My Spade is great! Travel-sized and a dynamic poser!
His Patreon has been quite quiet over the past year. Mostly due to the pandemic, and other projects, and Denys I think is finishing a degree and has been too busy to work on the comic. From what I've seen, Donn's been getting back into animating again and he's created from awesome little animations of Spade.
