Big BB Discussion(All Companies)

Mar 24, 2017

    1. Lucky! And congratulations!

    2. Thank you for the comments on my girl :)

@stellarphenomena - This is actually the Gem of Doll default face up for her. I wanted it to have a bit more color, particularly in the lips, which is why I want it redone xD But perhaps it is to your specific tastes, as it did turn out much more natural than their promo photos seemed to show.

    3. Thank you, I ended up ordering Edie and Ines from Angelesque as I am in the UK, I also got 20% discount! These two dolls are my grails, I really wanted to keep them together as they look so good together. The order has now been placed with Gem of Doll and is in production.

    4. wherethelilacsbloom: What sculpt is your girl? So pretty.I can see where you'd be disappointed with the faceup, but you're right - it's why I never really considered getting one, I like minimal paint. Considering getting Lilia (Yosd). Also think Katyusha is gorgeous.

    5. Much GEM of dolls talk in this tread. Nice!:thumbup
Does anyone know how long the waiting time is for these dolls?
I just ordered a Mococo girl and hope she will be home soon :)*happy*

    7. Wish I could help, but I ordered my Gem of Doll girl early last year. I have another on order now, but it's only been about a month. :)

    8. I asked Alice from Alice's Collections and she said 2-5 months for Gem of Doll. Edie and Ines will be my first Gem of Dolls.

    10. Got my Myou pear body yesterday and redid the Dollfamily head for skin tone match.

Still not sure if I am naming the doll Galaxy or Andromeda.

    11. @zekarmisama So cute! You did a great job matching the skin tone. I love space-themed names in general, but my vote is for Andromeda. :goldstar

Here's my MYou Matcha (Ren) during the snowfall we had last month:

    12. That moment when you look at a doll and know you need it in your life, and then find out it's already a sculpt you have. They are adorable! <3

    13. Is there another common BJD type out there that one could compare the measurements of a BB to, like a DDS or something? I love my BB, but she is so hard to shop for, especially when I’m looking for Lolita clothes! Looking for Disney Animator clothes doesn’t yield very many results in that department, and just buying clothes that are generically labeled as “1/4” is kind of a gamble. Obviously I look for clothing that doesn’t appear to have much of a defined shape to it, but even then, it can be hit-and-miss. The only reason that she has a school uniform is because I bought one for my normal MSD, and then saw that it was rather loose on her and found that it was actually a better fit for my BB, but the others are just a shot in the dark if going by photos. Finding shoes is almost impossible, which is why she only has one pair. In fact, Animators’ clothes tend to be slightly too big for her, as both her panties and one pair of shoes are a little loose. Not about to fall off or anything, but not quite as snug as I’d like.

Also, I really want to do a short kimono/ninja type outfit for her, just because she has an energetic personality. She’s the one who would be turning cartwheels in the schoolyard, loose skirt or not.

So, am I crazy, or is it possible that our darlings might be able to share clothes with SD-Midis? I’m trying to find a more reliable source of clothing for this size and thought that it might help if I looked back at the original brand.

    14. I have a Luts Baby Delf, who is sort of towards the slimmer end of BB sizing. She can (just barely) fit into a Dollheart MSD (aka original Volks MSD sizing) lolita style outfit and she's managed to fit into an Azone 50cm sweater/camisole set as well.

Looks like your Doll Legend might be about .5 cm off a Baby Delf's measurements in the chest and waist. I think you're still mostly going by trial and error, as even with 1/4 size clothing is not always specified whether it is for a slim MSD or for a less mature MSD. Volks sizing ought to be more consistent though.

Note that Volks DearSD (their BB size) is actually much wider and more likely to wear modified SD clothing than MSD stuff.

      • x 2
    15. Thanks for creating this thread! I love this style but I have yet to own one :) I love all the photos people are posting!!

    16. Volks is actually really weird though. Like, some of their outfits are listed as being able to fit like, 5 different types of dolls.

    17. Yeah, even though SDC and MDD are technically slimmer, I think Volks figures most things work throughout their lines (which might be technically true, just doesn't account for a tailored fit). To be safest, I'd only look at clothes via the MSD tag on Volks' webshop & then still know you're better off with a knit or oversized looking outfit.

    18. The MSD and SDM tags are two different tags.

    19. Yes, Volks "SD Midi" is the newer body, Volks MSD is the original. There might be small size differences, so if you check the wiki here, it might have the specific measurements to check against.

    20. I tried. It did not have anything helpful. I've resorted to emailing Volks to ask them, but as it is the weekend, they have not responded.

This is one outfit I have been looking at and wondering if it would fit? Home :: Dollfie® Outfits :: VOLKS Outfit Brands :: All Brand Outfits :: Lacy Tulle Dress (Vanilla) / Mini I am trying to find outfits for my girls to wear that coordinate with the Lolita dresses that I'll be wearing to a convention. Volks also has a nightgown I am interested in since she is the only girl without proper pajamas.

Truth be told, all but one of Kiku's current outfits were custom-made for her. Two of them are from Stacy's Pink Ocean, and the other is part of a set of grab bags that I got for my girls at like 10 bucks each that included a full outfit for each girl. The seller on Etsy custom made those using each of their measurements.

The only one that isn't custom-made is her school uniform, but that was... kind of an accident. ^^; I bought the uniform before I got her, but it was such a loose fit on my mature MSD that when I got Kiku, I decided to just try it on her and see and it turned out to be a perfect fit.

    21. The DoA wiki has the measurements for MSD bodies here.
      The girls are listed as:
      Height: 42cm
      Head: 19.5cm (7–8" wig)
      Neck: 8.5cm
      Chest: 18.5cm
      Shoulder width: 8.5cm
      Waist: 15.3cm
      Hips: 19cm
Arm Length: 12.5cm (shoulder to wrist)
      Leg Length: 17cm (inseam)
      Foot Length: 5.5cm
      Foot Width: 2.5cm

I couldn't turn up anything spelling out the Midi measurements specifically, but this photo comparison between MSD and SD-Midi (found in the Midi discussion thread) suggests the differences might be quite small.

But comparing MSD measurements to my Baby Delf, her 18.5cm chest matches up fine, but her waist is thicker (19.5cm to MSD's 15.3cm) and her hips are also thicker (21.2cm to MSD's 19cm). Something relatively free-size like a onepiece gown (as you've linked) might work, but it depends on if the waist seam hits high enough. That's the problem I have with Dollheart's Cherry Classic on my Baby Delf - it's the waist that causes the zipper to have issues, but it's a relatively high waisted piece so she can just barely make it work. Something with a bit of shirring or elastic at the back would be safer.

I haven't tried buying too much off the shelf for my Big BBs - I intended to do more sewing myself for them - so I can't speak too much as to fit for general pieces. You would probably be okay looking at Luts' Baby Delf specific outfits, though - they are currently running a sale through the first week of May. Fabric Friends and Dolls (located in MD, USA) has some Baby Delf outfits in stock for cheaper shipping.

    22. Thanks!

    23. Good news! The Cubs school uniform I ordered on Alice’s fit my girl! Granted, I had to take her head off to get her into it and it was a pain to get back on (I think she may be strung a little too tightly).

    24. After a 6 month wait, Gem of Doll Edie and Ines are here! They are the most beautiful dolls I have ever seen. Both are full set with blushing and I love both of them.

    26. @wherethelilacsbloom she is so adorable. She has such a classic look :)

@stellarphenomena Im surprised Tony doesnt seem more popular, hes really reasonably priced. Maybe people are put off by the non jointed torso.

I am waiting on a Cocotribe MianMian, which I think counts as a big BB from her measurements (Although I dont know if anthros are ok in this thread :XD: ) At least I wont have to worry about finding shoes that fit her!

    27. Cydril: Yeah, not sure why they did the non-joint. My first 1/8 Myou is like that but the newest one I got has a jointed torso - I'm assuming customer feedback.

For awhile, Fabric Friends has had $199 5Stardoll Tony in stock (no-face up), and Denver Doll a $460 GemofDoll BB Mona Angel with free Moki head (no face ups) also Doll Peddlar $430 Be with You..Paprika Puff. No one seems interested though.

    28. Kind of falling out of love with the anime style head I have on my MYOU big baby.

But I am not sure what new head I want to put on it. Something with a smile.

    29. What head do you have now?

    30. It's the Dollfamily Anthony head.

    31. I've been eyeing Paprika Puff for a while now. I finally caved and bought the one from Doll Peddlar because I am a sucker for instant gratification. I'll share photos when she gets here!

      • x 1
    32. I've almost bought her a couple of times! I'm glad you have given her a home!

    33. I swapped out the Doll Family Anthony head for a Ninodoll Bada head. The head looks a little wonky from some angles (it definitely would not work for a short-haired character) and the design of the slot for the head seems to make it want to tilt forward, but I can probably futz with that... I just have had Ninodoll Bada on my "possibly" list so many times it was like.... maybe just get Bada.... I love the smile.

While I was at the SD BJD Convention, I got a super cute dress and hat ensemble.

[IMG]San Diego BJD Con 2019 by Kaxen6, on Flickr

I also acquired a Leeke Valentina on the art volume body at the convention. Not a chubby baby with the bubble boobs she has, but I think I might have a Pear Butt Crew now lol.

I also have a Anna-Queen Laya v2 on a Junior Delf Body that I haven't done anything with in agggesssss, but Laya looks nice on the Myou Chubby baby body.... maybe I will get one more body in the future. Or another chubby pear butt body. I dunno. That is a kinda "for later" plan....

    34. She looks cute, and great answer to your dilemna! I always say go for the dolls that speak to you and you really love!
I love the outfit you got her as well. I have 3 chubby big babies, and would probably get more in the future. I think they are the perfect size to play with and sew for!

    35. @whisperwolf yeah for sure! I love my big dolls, but it was just so nice to have one light enough to just sit on my arm without tiring myself out. I started with 1/4 dolls when I began collecting BJDs then moved to bigger ones and I think the chubby baby size made me fall in love with the 1/4 size again.

Kinda want to buy some props/furniture for a chubby baby crew. My biggest problem as someone who primarily has 60-70cm dolls is that the furniture is both expensive and hard to find stuff that doesn't make my lanky long-legged boys look like a man squatting in a kid's chair. But 1/4 scale is so much more manageable!

    36. Comi baby has new heads for their baby series plus Peridot and Lulu basic are on sale.

    37. I'll have to see if I can swing it after the holidays but I'm planning on buying the sweet dream Lulu. I'm in love with my Peridot but she needs a friend. ❤️

    38. She is really sweet! She'll be my first dreaming head.

I got my Paprika Puff today and she's really lovely. Her face is so soft and pretty, but I'm super unimpressed with her posing. She can't even hold up her legs or arms and she's all floppy. She can't even sit up because her legs are too limp.

So, I figured she just needed shorter strings, but when I took a look, she's strung oddly. Her torso has no channel for elastic, there is a small hold straight from one leg to the other so she has one piece of elastic that goes from one foot through the hole to the other foot. I pulled that string as tight as I could and she's still floppy.

I was so excited because the YOSDs are such good posers. I assumed she'd be the same way. Does anyone have some tips on how to get her to hold a pose?

ETA* She also has a piece of sticky velcro on her head not shown in the dollsbe listings. I mistakenly assumed I'd be purchasing a new doll from doll peddler, not a used one.

    39. How comfortable are you with hot glue sueding, @pixidance ? It should help if you add some sueding to all leg joints but even just where the hip and leg join would help her sit and hold her leg up.

    40. I think when you purchase from a dealer you have to assume the doll may have been on display. I'm sorry to hear about the strange stringing!

    41. It's not something I"ve tried yet. I'll have to look into it, but she's so floppy, I'm not sure if that'll help. She just collapses into a heap when I let go of her.

On display seems reasonable, for sure. I guess I just didn't expect her to have the velcro. I've ordered an in stock doll from Doll Peddler before and was very happy with it. Since this experience is different, I just have to adjust expectations lol

    42. @pixidance
It helped me with my LeekeWorld Florence who wouldn't even stand on her own. I sueded all her joints and I definitely noticed the difference when the hip & leg joint was done. It really adds resistance so it doesn't wiggle out of place too easily.

    43. That's great! I'm trying shortening her string, but that doesn't seem to be working well, so I'll give that a go next :D

    44. Good luck!

    45. So, the Comibaby doll I ordered on Nov 20 arrived today! I can not believe how fast she arrived! Here are a few shots with her compared to my Xagadoll MI Milk, and the Paprika Puff. The light has been garbage recently. Hopefully I can find some time to get some nicer shots. All 3 have company faceups and eyes.

    49. Thanks @Cydril ! I was worried the head wouldn't work but I am also like finally I have a ninodoll Bada. I have considered this head so many times over the years, I think it was meant to be.

Waiting on mohair from Russia to make a new wig for Galaxy. I was tempted by the cheap price (it was like $6 for 1/3 oz) but the slow shipping is like aaahhhhhhhhhhhhh It was trapped in Russia's outbound post office for like over 10 days. =_=

I got over my fears of dyeing and figured out how not to have a matted mess, and really want to make a gradient wig in rainbow or at least like a 3-color blend to fit Galaxy's name.

    50. I've ordered a 5SD SUPER Kid Tony today from DDE. The dang wig size wasn't listed but I'm assuming it'll be 7-8?

    51. Most BB's need an 8-9.

Edit: I found an ebay listing that lists his head circumference as 23.8 which is 9.38 inches.

    56. Koi is looking pretty nice ^__^ I can't wait to see her all finished.

I'm so being drawn in by these big babies. I kind of want to shell one of my boy characters but I'm not sure whether I want him in YOSD or BB size. I'm leaning towards BB size but not sure if I can haul them around in a purse/bag/backpack like I can with my YOSD. His age is around 7 so normal MSD don't make the cut.

Can anyone perhaps share their experiences with BB companies? Bonus points if they have a reliable dealer in Europe.

To sum it up I am looking for a sturdy poser that is available in a mild tan (not too red/orange) and has a sculpt that is a little brooding/absent/pensive. I know face-ups do a lot here but obvious smilers are a no-go. Compatibility with well-known sizes would be so awesome seeing I can't sew to save my life (yet). Working on that, haha~

Do you advise against getting a BB if I want to drag them around everywhere? What's your experience with going out with them?

      • x 2
    57. I brought my BB to a convention and he was easy to carry around for me. I weighed him and my MYou BB pear boy weighs about 2 pounds while dressed up. My 1/4 Dollzone boy weighed 1 pound 10 oz, but I find the BB size easier to carry. Teen proportioned 1/4 dolls have proportionally longer legs, I sometimes bang them into things... BB is like the right size to have in the hook of my arm without too much dangling legs.
