~20cm Dolls Bi and quadruped cat bjd (in process)

Nov 7, 2019

    1. Working on a race of cait-sith and I was hoping to make cute a 1:12 sized cat bjd that can be a cat and when in the ‘fairy world’ be dressed up and stand.

      I’ve come up with a plan I like (below) and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me for articulating this fellow? Other than knowing I can use the tail as a tripod to support standing. I’ll post some more plans and ideas on the weekend when I’m freed from work and have free time :P

    2. that looks really cute! i wish i could help with the jointing and although i have been sculpting dolls for a long time animal dolls are not my forte;;;;
      i did give cat bjd sculpting a shot once, the only thing of note was i was pretty proud of the back jointing as it allowed for the distinctive outline cats have when sitting but it doesn't look like your stylistically going for that...

      all i can suggest is simpler but well shaped joints are the way to go in this scale, everything else is technical advise on how to actually work in such a small scale (get some magnifying glasses !)

      as for posting images i would suggest flicker (for up to 200 images i think?) or tumblr (although a blog site you can still use it to host the images, after just view image separately and paste it between )

    3. I think ill try out Flickr :) I’ve revised my plan to be a bit more realistic and less stylised so some images or advice for the back legs would be great!

    4. i'd love to see those!
      i have made horse legs before but i am not sure if that would help for a cat as the leg motion range is quite different (and it did not need to stand on 2 at all)
      you would probably want a large hip socket ball with some groves on it so it doesn't swivel too easily but depending on how large the doll is it's size might work for your benefit as the smaller the doll the less need you have for such details

    5. Im not sure about the grooved hip joints? I’ve only tried a simple ball joint and never even finished that :p could you explain, help!

      Just finished my more realistic plan and am asking for some advice for articulation, mainly for the head and back legs hip socket!

      Specifically do you think having two main holes connected by a smaller channel would work to lock a ‘standing’ and ‘walking’ head position? Unsure of the hips, and double jointed elbows on the front and maybe back legs???

    6. some dolls have groves, notches or bumps on the joint to add friction so it just doesn't swivel just due to the dolls own weight, there is a lot of different ways to do it i don't have any example pictures on hand;;;

      here is the cat doll i was making, feel free to use the ideas if they work for your project :)

    7. Ooh very cute! I’ll see the notches etc when I’m past the cutting and joint stage I’ll see how that works

    9. Messed up trying to put the torso together, added too much clay and now I don’t know which part of the tummy fits where! My poor labour intensive sculpting :’( so I made a new torso (added extra width between the legs while I was at it, so pics of that soon, but see my sadness.
