I want to warn folks about using UPS as shipper. Here is the deal - IF you send UPS - the will actually ONLY honor the insurance if THEY pack the box!!! Of course, they don't tell you this!!!! but are happy to take your 'insurance' money UPS works hard to find all kinds of excuses to deny the claim - from 'bad packing' to 'broken before or after it was shipped' to 'previously used box is not a valid shipping container'. Be sure to take photos of the doll/object as you pack it too - even tho that didn't help in this case either. I will NEVER ship with UPS again. I am thinking about joining the class action lawsuit against them for their denying of insurance claims. You can find out about that on www.my3cents.com UPS has 300+ complaints - the other shippers are WAY lower in the complaint list. This was only one of the sources/web site/blogs about UPS operations. http://makeupspay.webs.com/ PLEASE be careful folks - I just don't want any of you to have this sort of awful problem too. a former UPS shipping customer, Robyn
Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience. I used to work for UPS, and a big part of my job was processing claims. I assure you, we had no problem paying insurance claims for packages which were not packed for UPS. However, UPS generally will not honor insurance claims for damaged packages which do not meet their packing standards (viewable online here: http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/packaging/guidelines/how_to.html). I believe it is also the case nowadays that claims for packages packed by UPS employees/at The UPS Store will be either immediately approved, or approved more quickly, than claims for items packed by customers. I don't want to seem like I'm sticking up for UPS here, as it's obvious that you've had an unfortunate experience with the company. However, if you were told that UPS only pays claims for items packed by UPS employees, you were given incorrect information.
USPS isn't much better on paying out on claims. I recently had a doll broken in transit, and it was insured. USPS has been delaying and giving me the run-around on the claim settlement for over a month now. I'm fairly certain they're not going to pay out. So far, it has been nothing more than a waste of my time, money, and energy.
Thanks for your thoughts greeniebone - so far I've heard on other doll boards from a LOT of folks who've had the same awful experience as I've just had. Most of us dolly folks know how to pack a doll well - and I have gotten rave reviews from folks I've sold to in the past. This doll was also very well packed. But - it was shipped during the arctic blast and as we all know, resin/plastic can become brittle in the very cold. My guess is that they threw the box into a truck and the shocking movement broke the doll. I think that UPS used to be a good company and a reliable one - and has lost that in the last 10-15 years. I will NEVER use them again. And will try to get the word out as far as I can so that others aren't ripped off in this manner too. If they accept a shipper's money for insurance - they should be willing to pay out when the object is broken. jmho, Robyn
Hi Kiya, I'm really sorry to hear that you've been hit too. I try to always take photos as I pack something - and hope that those photos - with date stamps - would help in the event of needing to make a claim. My one experience with USPS was for a lost package - and that claim was speedily paid. I've talked with several people who have made USPS claims for broken items that were paid - even tho it took some time. This UPS situation dragged on for OVER a month before the claim was denied. And one doesn't even have a real person to talk with to try to resolve the situation. I hope that your outcome is better than mine, sorry Kiya, Robyn
