Hey guys! I'm getting sick of spamming everybody on facebook with my doll photos, and was thinking of posting my photos elsewhere. So where is the best place for a doll-photo-blog? I have tried blogspot in the past and didn't get very far with it. I'm leaning toward tumblr? So what do you guys think?
I find tumblr awkward to post a large amount of images on, but that's just me. Overall it's quite a good lil tool. I'm not too sure of anything else. Sorry.
I don't have a website anymore so I've started uploading my photos to Flickr, which is convenient and very easy to use. When I had a site I never had problems adding photos to DoA. But last night I tried adding a photo (from Flickr) to a thread and all I kept getting was the blue question box/missing image icon. It drove me nuts because so many others here don't seem to have that problem. As a last resort I added a link to my Flickr photostream and went to bed. I'm sure there's a simple solution, I just don't see it. Suan in WI
I use photobucket. It comes with massive mounts of free storage -- I've used the same account since 2005 and have never had to clean it out once. Flickr will delete your additional photos if you stop paying for additional storage. However, it has a very active doll community which can be an advantage in its own right. I also like and use instagram because it is mobile.
Flickr doesn't delete your photos if you go over the limit or stop paying for premium membership. It will put them in storage so that you can't get to them until you have cleared some space or renewed your membership. It took me a good few years to need premium membership on there, and I take A LOT of photos. The advantage of flickr is that is it not so obsessively policed as Photobucket. Providing you put your settings to "private" for the picture, you can upload pretty much what you want. With Photobucket, they have kittens if you upload a picture of a topless dolly. Personally, I could live without that sort of censorship.
Mmm, forgive me for the mistake and thanks for the clarification! I know that sometimes photobucket can censor pictures, but I have droves of naked dolls on mine and have never had that happen yet!
Photobucket is the lowest in terms of no frills, does what it does. You can upload gajllions (yes that is a number now) of photos and not have any problems. I haven started to weed myself away from it, but all of my old photos are safe and sound. I find it harder to do batch edits/tagging/sizing on photobucket than I do on Flickr, which irritates me to no end! I'm lazy and demand instant gradification! Flickr is what I use now. I love that I can just upload my photos and just choose to link any size that I want. It's also easier for my to upload batches because I can just choose a gallery in iPhoto and upload it! The downsize to Flickr is what Splynterhayde was trying to explain: after 200 photos, the older photos aren't viewable in your photostream anymore. But they are NOT deleted. If you've previously linked to older photos, the link isn't broken. Another plus with flickr is that there are groups that you can join, so it's a community as well as a place to store your photos. Tumblr is the only place that you actually mentioned that would work as a photo blog. It's not hard uploading photos at all. Unlike blogger or blogspot (are they the same thing?) tumblr is more fast paced and it's less geared towards text blogs. :3 I hope this helps! Oh yea, you can also link tumblr to your facebook, so people who are on facebook but not tumblr, can still see the photos you post!
I've got Photobucket, Tumblr and Flickr. I use Flickr the most. You can only upload a certain amount of photo's/video's a month on Flickr though, if you don't have premium membership. However, it's only something like $24 for the year and imo worth it. I used to just be free membership, which worked fine for what I wanted at the time, but now I'm premium due to the fact I was uploading more than the free membership allowed. I haven't used Photobucket since I've had Flickr, so I can't comment on what that is like now, but I do remember that any nude doll pics got deleted if they weren't set to private. As for Tumblr, it's the best blog I've used in terms of simplicity. It's easy to use and of course you can blog, so if blogging is what you are after then out of those suggested, Tumblr would be better for you.
Derp - thanks guys Photobucket I have always used, and shall continue to use, for uploading images to then link to (although I have also had nude dolly photos removed from there. The last ones were actually of YOUR doll Mau! xP) I will bear flickr in mind but I have made a tumblr for now P: Thanks guys for your advice and comparisons! (Butterflies & Buns if anybody is particularly curious)
I like Flickr: I have a premium membership on there and it's worth it as it's easy to share the photos, there's a lovely Lati doll community and the groups are great. Only issue is the ban on sales photos.
Flickr is my go to place for just mass uploading photos. Like many here, I pay for the premium membership and it's well worth it. I use it, a lot, for just plain photo storage. Just dump everything up there and forget about it. You can also use your dA I update my journal like a blog XD throw ugly photos in scraps (ones that I'd just use for blogging) and then share my more artistic work in my gallery. The doll community on dA is rather vast, and I've met a lot of great artists through it
Yay - thank you n_n I love DA Q_Q and even used to have a photography account so that I didn't spam my main account with it, however I'm taking a hiatus from the whole site atm due to work/uni. The nice thing about tumblr and flickr and stuff is that there is not such an obligation to comment and reply to comments? I can just post stuff when I want and be done with it :3
Flickr is easy to use and is almost always up (i.e.~ not broken) I find that the doll community on Flickr is also really great.
Flickr is my place to be. I love it to pieces. I tried using Photobucket once upon a time, but I hated it. I have a tumblr, but I don't really use it all that much. Plus, Flickr uses Picnik (which will be changing soon for some reason related to Google) and I find it to be easier to use that Photoshop, but that's just me. Yes, some things you need to buy a premium subscription, but I don't have one and I'm doing just fine without it. I'm not going to pay $24 a month for it because 1: I can't afford it and 2: that's just dumb. Hope it helps!
I'm on Flickr too, I love the clean layout and overall look, plus it's user-friendly. It's $24.95 per year, not per month. And for two years it's $44.95. :>
I am content with Flickr so far. I do pay for the pro account (which is ~$25 per year, so very reasonable), because I ran out of the allotted free space quickly. It's not without faults, though. There have been a few occasions when the pictures I posted on DoA stopped showing up and, instead, had the dreaded "photo currently unavailable" message. I had mods contact me to fix the 'dead' picture or my post will be deleted. It's frustrating, because I hadn't moved or renamed those pictures, so it's purely a Flickr issue. Researching the issue further didn't yield anything useful. From what I read, this happens on and off, and there's really nothing that can be done about it - sometimes, the pictures will show up again after a while, sometimes they won't, until you re-post the link. But, having said that, I haven't found anything better for the price, so I will continue to use Flickr. Also, it has a very active doll community, so that's huge plus as well.
I've had a look at other photo sharing sites, but always go back to Photobucket since I absolutely can't stand fiddling with the links. I need something that is right there, not three (or eight...) clicks away, and has a ready made img-code, all ready to post. Without a silly caption, thank you. As far as I can figure this, Flickr doesn't do that. Tell me, all you experienced Flickr people, am I blind? Also, I absolutely want to organise photos into albums and sub albums, and I haven't figured out how to do that on Flickr either...
Quiet Queen, do you find that Photobucket deletes nude doll photos on a regular basis? I've heard that it happens there quite often, which is what's stopping me from giving them a try. Not that I am into nude doll photography, but I'd like to be able to post pictures of my box openings and/or blushing attempts without worrying that the images will be deemed inappropriate by my photo sharing site of choice. As far as Flickr, you can get an image code very quickly by grabbing either the bbc or html code from the "Share" menu that appears on top of the image. It does have the caption, but it's easy to edit it out by removing the extra lines of code. You are also able to choose the size of the image, so that's quite convenient as well. I wish Flickr had albums as well, but for now I'm content with their Sets/Collections setup, which is effectively just like an album.
To get the code without the caption, you can either delete the caption, or take the image link straight from Flickr instead of the page link. (I'm not sure I'm explaining very well here.) I used PB before moving to Flickr, and still use PB for mass storage and uploading. The difference is PB automatically reduces the quality of photos, even for paid users, which disappoints me. I find Flickr more intuitive to use once you're used to it! :> As for organisation, you have to click the "Organise and Create" button on the top of the page. You can group photos into albums (or rather, "sets", as they call them), and if you're a paid user you can have group sets into collections. Unlike PB which has no limit to how many levels of sub-albums you can have, Flickr only has this two levels.
Yes, Photobucket does delete nude doll images. Somewhat at random, oddly enough. I have stopped using Photobucket for nude images for that reason, which is very frustrating. I have experimented with Flickr and saw that you can delete the unnecessary parts of the img-code from the Share menu, but frankly - to do that for more than the odd picture would drive me into the chandalier, foaming at the mouth and singing "They are coming to take me away ha ha"! The quality reduction Photobucket does is something you can change the settings for. You can get high res quite easily. I haven't found anything that even begins to hold a candle to Photobucket's ease of use. I'd love to leave them for something which lets me keep my nude photos at the same place and is truly easy to use - I just haven't found anything that fits that bill!
I personally use blogspot through google. You can see my blog below in my siggy. My blog connects to my photography website: http://johannemoorephotography.smugmug.com. It isn't free like the others that have been mentioned but if you really like being able to post full HD quality photos and have an online portfolio of your photography then smugmug is your best bet. While it does a magnificent job showcasing your photos, you would still need a separate blog. I have both!
Smugmug is more of a Gallery...where you'd link people to instead of the other way around. It's more of a professional venue for photographers and stuff in order for them to either set up an online gallery/portfolio, or a shop.
I highly recommend Flickr Though sometimes I also post my BJD photos on my Tumblr, DA and Livejournal
quiet queen, the bbc code for images is only (img) (/img) obviously with square brackets instead of parentheses. You just paste the image URL into that (the image ending in .jpg, .png, or .gif) It's quite easy to remember after a few times of using it Makes things 10X easier when all I need is the image url
The thing I don't care for on sites like that is...if you make your images public...then Flickr or whoever often then has rights to your images. (Not that images of bjds are valuable...but still...it's the principle.) There was a family that had their home photos used for some add in Europe. Boo.
that is only if you turn on the setting to include your photos in getty images, a stock photo company. Turning on getty images will include anything you upload into their database of usable images. Which is probably what happened with the family. However, flickr can use your photos for whatever they want; advertisements for them, the rotating banner on the front page, etc), but they do not have the rights to pass it on to anyone else. Flickr would not survive for the number of professional photographers it has if they took away all the photographers' rights. So the family that had their photos taken for that advertisement wasn't flickr's fault. They either enabled getty images, or whoever created that advertisement (or another stock company) took the photo from flickr illegally- this isn't uncommon. Nor is it unavoidable. Many photographers here, including myself, have had our photos stolen and sold at cellphone covers, mirrors, used as advertisements, etc. You can't avoid it if you put your images online. People just think they're going to get away with it - and unfortunately, if it is large corporations that are taking the photos, you run a slim chance of defending yourself unless they do it in mass and a population can go against the corp. You would drown so much money in legal costs that it most likely would not be worth it for someone's single photo. However, if it's an online advertisement, and something that doesn't need to be pulled from print, then you run a better chance of the company agreeing to remove it (or pay royalties to you, which is unlikely) as that's a lot simpler than pulling an entire print campaign.
Yes, that's correct. There's even a neat cheat in the vBulletin format, you click the picture icon and put your image code into the little window that opens if. But I tend to think writing the BB code is usually quicker. But about grabbing a link on Flickr - is there a swifter way to do it than to click the image and then klick the Share dropdown?
right click copy image URL and you were saying your problem was with too many clicks. It's more efficient to just type it (assuming you can type properly) than move your hand to your mouse and have to click to add your image.
I have a flickr and a tumblr. I love tumblr because I've found an amazing community there. Flickr, I'm sure has community, but is mainly just where you post pictures. Not as many people are going to see them, though.
not necessarily true Flickr offers many groups to submit your images to, and justl ike groups on dA, these promote your images to users who may otherwise not see them. I have noticed trends in flickr as opposed to deviantArt though. Flickr tends to lean more toward adorable cute photos of pudgy little lati's or big eyed dollfie dreams, while deviantart strays more towards sex appeal and creative photography.
I use Flickr, I have Photobucket too, but I find that site harder to organize. I do use it for back up, just dumping photos in there. I keep that account private. Flickr I keep my finer photos on. They are neatly organized. I keep a link on my website (I am a bear maker) for people to view past works. I also belong to groups, it is a fun place to look around on.
click share (above the photo) >> you'll see "share via", "grab the link", and "grab the HTML/BBCode" click the last one >> make sure BBCode is selected and choose the size you want >> copy the code and paste it where you want to post it.
I have accounts with Flickr, Photobucket, and Tumblr. I usually use Photobucket the most, as I share my photos on other sites using those links. I also use it as my backup storage place for photos. I think only once have I had nude doll photos deleted, and that's been awhile. I have a few others up to show differences in my hybrid's resin, but I may take them down soon and replace them with better versions (with sensors). Flickr I use more like a personal gallery to share with my bjd friends. I also use it to share other photos from my camera and iPod, and to network with other doll owners who may not be on DoA. Tumblr I don't use for doll stuff. I use for other hobbies, such as sharing my favorite movies, books, tv shows, video games, and so on. You might also consider deviantART if that interests you (or anyone else, really). I used to use it for doll photos, personal photos, etc...but it's rather just around to gather dust now.
I have several photobucket accounts ive used over many years and i really just dont like it anymore. It used to be okay maybe 5 years ago but now it kinda sucks. My favorite place to host images, is imageshack. Its fast and really easy. No lag like photobucket gives me. If you just need URLS and want a place to save images for yourself, i think imageshack is the best. But for sharing images in like a gallery place, i think flickr is the best in that sense.
I don't know if this has changed, but images I have saved at imageshack over the years are gone. So if you're hoping to keep them for 3+ years, I would not recommend imageshack.
Personally, I'd prefer flickr over any other image host. The quality of an image stays in tact and the viewing interface is appealing.
Instagram for cellphone: why I use it, pros, and cons. Pros: - Always accessible. Convenient. Has (decent!) effects and the essential editing tools like brightness/contrast and rotate. My phone is with me 98% of the time and I don't always feel like going to get my camera, taking the picture, connecting it to the computer, editing it, and then uploading it, especially for quick "snapshot" moments. Instagram's, well, instancy, allows me to share pictures I wouldn't otherwise feel like taking, and I believe this is why Instagram is so successful and has worked for me. - A "snapshot" moment can be really cute, but can feel too insubstantial to be gallery material. I don't like putting those kinds of photos on Flickr, whereas Instagram is a great place to keep them. Cons: - It's not really searchable since there are no tags. - It doesn't allow for the kind of browsing experience you get at Flickr and feels less permanent. Plus, it's yet another account to remember passwords for.
I've never used Flikr, but I love Tumblr and I've been using deviantArt for years. I post most of my stuff on deviantArt, becuase I don't really havbe any BJD followers on tumblr. But I do post stuff when I'm really proud of it on my blogs. Tumblr's layout is really nice and makes your photos look great together if you size and collate(?) them right.
I know your feeling, cos I feel my fb are too much for my dolls pics too, I'm using flickr, and there is so many doll groups you can join too, have fun ^^
Mostly, for me, I'd use Tumblr for blogging, and DeviantArt for the photoraphy aspect (as that's what I usually do with any form of photography I do)
I guess, for me, it's Tumblr. I never really showed anyone my dolls there, but I like how the image is pretty easy to view. Tumblr also notifies you when someone has "liked" or "reblogged" your post, which can be a little bit of an ego boost. You could also use Photobucket (I have one of those, as well) but I keep everything private because I use it for storage, instead of viewing. If I want to share something, I can post the link, and it will show up on sites like DoA and Tumblr, but I have more control over what I'm sharing. I have a DA account, too, but nothing's on it. At some point, I tried posting photos of my doll, and they weren't able to upload; rather than waste my time dealing with it, I had the Photobucket account; I don't use my DA. I've actually wanted to delete it because I don't use it, don't need it, and don't really frequent the site.
I've always enjoyed using Flickr for most of my stuff, mainly because it integrates well with what I use for editing (Lightroom 3) and with a pro account for only like 25 a year, you can put as much as you can and just hotlink it to Tumblr for easy access.
I like the fact that Flickr has a large doll community! Being a photographer I tend to keep my account doll-related only (which can be hard sometimes, but it's worth it!)
Imgur does indeed have some rules, including "no pornography or anything that looks like pornography" - which is pretty much the same as photobucket, and depends heavily on the people doing the interpreting.
I use DeviantArt and Tumblr. DeviantArt is very easy to see your pictures in categories listed. But it's hard to make your account popular since you are not the only one showing your dolls there. Tumblr is for me only a way of storage. To have all my pics on a neat row.
if you want to have a collection of photos Flickr is best option, there you can make sets and folders to keep them organized, people can comment really easily, you can join groups for doll photography and so, and if you add tags to your photos it will be pretty easy to search for them. and the whole please have a pretty friendly and clean look. if you use tumblr it will be more messy as it works like a blog, older photos get left behind on the pages and will e more difficult to access, and it more of a problem to keep track of them
Flickr for the best quality and potentially large pool of viewers with so many BJD groups (as in communities) to post your photos to DeviantArt is second choice but i just don't like them as much as flickr, plus unless they have a batch upload tool (do they?), uploading pictures to them is a PITA. Tumblr is good if you want your pictures to become viral and get a lot of viewers fast, but you must follow a lot of people in order for people to check your blog and reblog your photos. Also Tumblr due to the viral nature of the site you have less control. again, no batch uploading that i'm aware of. People are also forgetting Imgur - basically the new, improved spinoff of Photobucket -and Twitter, tweeting images with hashtags is also a great way to get your images to go viral.
I love flickr. I find it a warm and friendly community. Even when My photos were of a shocking standard I would still get encouraging comments. It is the comments that make you try harder!
For sharing photos, I use flickr. It is esy to use and I can choose groups to place them in too. It is also I great page for getting links to my photo for showing them on other forums. For showing art photos, some few special ones with one theme, I use tumblr.
I use Photobucket for mass photos or for photostories. For photos I do for Photoshoots or those photos I find in good quality, I place in Flickr. Tumblr is not really for my doll stuff, but it's easy to upload there.
If you want just a dolly blog I'd go with Tumblr, you wont have any limit for posting photos plus you can follow other amazing BJD blogs! But if you looking for just an area to post photos (for file sharing on DOA or anywhere) photobucket is nice. This can also apply with Flickr and DeviantART. Personally, I would use DeviantART for it. Sometimes it can drag your quality down (if your shooting in HD holy-amazing) though, but what website doesn't? Also, DeviantART doesn't have a limit for photos (none that I believe) and there is a huge doll owner population on it!
With the changes in Flickr, I am looking for a similar setup elsewhere. Many Flickr users are going to Ipernity but that is fairly new - not sure about it? Google photo share (Picasa) looks similar to Flickr and is anyone using that? I just loved the contacts I made on Flickr, the comments made, etc. but now flickr is very difficult to manage and I do not like the set-up at all. Looking for comments Jo
The changes to the flickr layout make it virtually unworkable. It used to be the site that I would recommend over all others, because of its lack of neurotic censorship and it relative ease of use. Now? No way. So many people have complained about the changes that I hope they listen. I have pro membership and will wait until that has expired. If the layout hasn't been sorted by then, I am off. And it does look as though people are moving over to Ipernity, so that might be the solution.
