Hey everyone! I am getting back into the hobby after many years and I am working on restyling all of my old BJD’s to fit the new world I created for them. The world is in a more medieval/fantasy type of setting however most of the clothing on the market (that I've been able to find) leans towards a more modern style. The best place I found so far is Etsy, but most of the fantasy stuff on there is patterns and I'm not very good at sewing. I do eventually plan on learning how to sew, but in the meantime, I would love to know if anyone has any other recommendations for shops or creators that make fantasy/medieval clothing. Thanks!! P.S: Alternatively, does anyone have any recommendations for good beginner sewing tutorials?
If you are on Etsy I would recommend Capsuledoll. They usually work in MSD and SD size but I have commissioned them to make YOSD wizard outfit. They were great to work with! I have a lot of fantasy themed dolls but most of them were bought fullsets so they came with outfits. Alice Collections can sometimes order clothes from companies and they carry a large selection. I don’t see so I don’t have any suggestions for that apart it there are some lovely tutorials on here and YouTube is a great place to learn new skills. I watch a lot of Dollightful and Enchantarium but not brave enough to do myself. XD
The Etsy shop I know of that has some amazing fantasy/medieval clothes is SapharBJDTailoring. They have some modern clothes, too. The shop owner lives in France so shipping to the US is pretty expensive. I recently ordered an MSD outfit from them.
If your dolls are a popular size, you'll be more likely to find more clothing options. Slim mini/Minifee size and off-topic Smart Doll size (similar to Dollfie Dream vinyl MJD proportions) seem to be well-serviced in English-speaking areas, whereas slim mini, 45cm slim mini boy, 60cm girl and various 70–75cm boy bodies seem more popular in Asia. The kind of medieval fantasy look you're going for also affects where you might find things: are you after a Renfaire commoner sort of look, or armoured knights, or lavish robes and gowns with lots of embellishments? Most of the fantasy-style outfits I see for sale are what I'd define as "video game fantasy": outfits that have a lot of small parts that are designed for display, but take a long time to put on the doll and aren't always "practical" in terms of thinking of the doll as a character who might be running around, in a swordfight or riding a horse – this is a YMMV situation. As to Etsy, from what I've heard from crafter friends, a lot of people have taken items off Etsy because of the high percentage the platform takes from user sales, US tariffs and having to compete with dropshippers, which has drastically affected what's available on the platform. If you're interested in trying sewing, many medieval basics such as gowns, tunics and robes have simpler construction than modern casual clothing and could be a good place to start. There are some older threads in the Workshop – one for fantasy medieval sewing and one for historically accurate medieval sewing – that could help serve as inspiration and have some useful hints. Antique Lilac (Tutorials) has made lots of beautiful medieval and fantasy style outfits, but most of her tutorials are designed for people with more sewing experience. I'd also recommend looking at human tutorials for Renfaire, reenactors and cosplay: a lot of medieval style clothing patterns are drafted using your own body's measurements, so it's easier to apply the calculations to a doll's proportions– I recently cobbled together a robe pattern by combining tutorials for a monk robe and a gown. Best of luck on your search!
It depends on your definition of medieval/fantasy type. For example, Volks/Luts have made outfits that I consider fantasy - some might still be for sale on their websites, others you might have to find second hand. Volks Water Fairy or Flower Fairy outfits come to mind. Luts also did outfits that reminded me of fairies a few years back as well. If you mean Ancient Chinese fantasy, I would check Alice's Collections/Legend Doll and see what the companies have out there! I know I got a few outfits from Angell Studio and Ring Doll a few years back! If you are talking European Medieval, the closest I have seen is SartoriaJ and sometimes Soom. Soom is definitely going to have to be second hand. If you are talking Tolkien, I commissioned excellent people from the doll community to make me Tolkienesqe outfits for my Elrond. (He is the spoiled doll.) So you might be able to find outfits on etsy/ebay/mercari/marketplace here/taobao using a proxy buyer. But if you can find some simple patterns, you can start there too! No one has to be dressed up in a bijillion layers, they can have a robe or tunic made out of fine fabric that you straight stitched yourself! My collection is all fantasy and I am realizing that all the modernish clothes I have bought them will need to get sold. It's a slow project.
Gem of doll sells their fullset outfits separately and I think they qualify as fantasy medieval! They have 1/3 and 1/4, though of course they only fit dolls with gem of doll measurements or similar.
Seconding Capsuledoll, they're wonderful. DollsFancy has some incredible pieces and weapons as well, but they're currently on break. Most of my fantasy/medieval finds have been found just through browsing etsy in an executive dysfunction haze - you never know what you'll find on page 32, after all. There's a second-hand market for clothing here on DoA as well! I've scored at least one gorgeous set just from taking a casual looksy. Honestly, just keep your eyes open! You never know what little bits and bobs you can reuse for doll-scale items. I repurpose human size jewelry into doll jewelry a lot - bracelets can become necklaces or belts, rings can become bracers, a little scrap ribbon can become a ring belt with literally a piece of wire and some glue. Don't be afraid to make things either - sometimes you just gotta Mess Around And Find Out. If it turns out wonky, just put some weathering on it and call it "rustic", it's fiiiiine. It's Free Storytelling.
Seconding SartoriaJ for European medieval/western fantasy. If your dolls fit their clothes, they make truly gorgeous and highly-detailed outfits.
Iplehouse has some fantasy/medieval outfits available for their FID (mature 1/4 scale) dolls: Female: https://iplehouse.com/home/shop/list.php?ca_id=6010g0&nhn1=en Male: https://iplehouse.com/home/shop/list.php?ca_id=6010f0&nhn1=en And some of them are on sale...
New Nymphodisiac Shop I just ordered some boots and a belt bag from this artist and pretty much all their work has a medieval fantasy bend to it! They aren't shipping to the US or Canada at the moment, but I thankfully have a friend in Wales that's going to send what I bought to me.
