best photo host and why?

Feb 21, 2011

    1. i am looking for a photo host to upload pictures of my bjds for a blog i want to start, den of angels, etsy, etc. i've never used a photo host before, so i'm looking for pro's and cons of the ones out there.

      specifically....

      which host do you use?

      why did you choose them?

what do you like about them?

what do you dislike about them?

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?

any help would be greatly appreciated
      thank you

    2. imageshack.us
simple, easy and I don't need to register to use it (though you can if you want and it will keep track of your photos)
There's also a toolbar for firefox that does screenshotting and uploading from the toolbar. Which was AMAZING when I still used firefox. I'm waiting for them to make one for chrome .n.

    3. which host do you use?
      flickr

      why did you choose them?
I liked the interface and it's easy to use and it's a good way to hunt for pictures as well (owner pics of dolls and such)

what do you like about them?
Nice easy to use website. Can comment and add pics to faves. Can add pics to groups. Can edit photos somewhat.

what do you dislike about them?
Not much really. I dont like that some people dont tag their pics so you cant always find them.I dont like the new black page it takes you to if you click the image.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
Well I started with photobucket but it frustrated me so much. So yes, I would start with flickr and stick to flickr

    4. which host do you use?
      Flickr

      why did you choose them?
It’s like the google of pictures. You can find tons of owner pictures.

what do you like about them?
Very easy to use. I love the favorite feature.

what do you dislike about them?
Hate it when people batch tag their photos, you try to see who the doll is and it says like twenty things. Also dislike that you can only upload 200 pictures unless you pay.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
I definitely would, and I have recommended it before.

I have also started to use photobucket for stupid picture I don’t want cluttering my flickr, but I find it very confusing.

    5. which host do you use?
Flickr and photobucket, though most recently I solely use Flickr

      why did you choose them?
Quite a bit of uploading and space for the free photobucket account, but I fell for the simplicity of Flickr after a while and use it more.

what do you like about them?
Photobucket is nice because you can make albums within albums within albums, so that's kind of cool, and they don't have a certain # of photos you can upload a month with a free account; they do, however, have a 500MB limit of space for storage, so anyone who photographs often wouldn't really be able to use it to its fullest extent. I also liked the way they display the different links to the image. However, Flickr allows you to make collections with sets inside of them, which works just as well (though is only two folders deep, rather than unlimited like Photobucket), and I like the way the photo stream works in Flickr, as well as the ability to see lots of contacts and their uploads, comments people make on your photos, and the ability to favorite other people's pictures (like on Deviant Art).

what do you dislike about them?
Photobucket seems clunkier and a bit harder to use than flickr. Search on flickr is -very- easy, as is the uploading feature, batch feature, the way of making and editing collections and sets. It all seems much more user friendly than photobucket. The limits are the worst if you can't afford a pro account in either place, but I feel like Flickr's pro account has been worth the price so far. Also batch tagging (but that's more that people do that, not that flickr necessarily does that) because you'll search for one doll and another will show up because they're in the same set or were uploaded at the same time.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
I'd choose both again. I use photobucket for its ease-of-use in creating multiple albums within albums, and therefore being easy to store items for the adoptables I run, but I definitely prefer flickr for my doll photography, and would highly recommend the pro flickr account to anyone who asked.

    6. which host do you use?
I've used photobucket and flickr. Since i found flickr, it's all I use. The free version is nice but I pay the small yearly fee and enjoy a pro account.

      why did you choose them?
I hate photobucket. I hate the layout, their uploading system, their browsing system and the amount of garbage on there. Flickr has a great layout, it's easy to use and the community of people on there is wonderful.

what do you like about them?
Flickr is easy to use; browsing, uploading, linking offsite, favouriting, commenting, etc. I really love the community on flickr as well - the doll owners you friend with on there are great. It feels like I get to know alot of people better and share more intimately in this hobby because of it.

what do you dislike about them?
I haven't had any real problems. Once in a blue moon someones pictures won't work for a moment but it's usually fixed with a quick refresh... and this is super rare. I spend HOURS daily on flickr some weeks and don't have issues.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
I love flickr, I reccommend it to everyone I know.

    7. which host do you use?
Currently I use mainly flickr although sometimes i use photobucket.

      why did you choose them?
I use search engine for image hosting the last time and came across photobucket. Much later on, I heard about flickr so I gave it a try.

what do you like about them?
I like the layout and presentation of Flickr. It is very clean, neat and a breeze to view. The presentation of photos under collection/sets look very nice and 'professional' too. it's what blows me away.
As for photobucket, I like the photo album system (allowing you to create albums within albums) and the links they provide for linking is very easy to use (hover over the thumbnails and a drop down menu will appear to copy the url).

what do you dislike about them?
I don't know if its me (maybe I'm missing something lol), but I find finding the direct link to the images on Flickr a tad troublesome.
For photobucket, although they have themes, I feel that a lot more could be done to improve the layout and presentation of images. I don't know... it feels somehow cluttered.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
I use flickr more at the moment. And yes I'd choose it again.

    8. which host do you use?
I use Photobucket for myself, but I also use Flickr for the con I'm staff at.

      why did you choose them?
Photobucket is free and has decent storage.
Flickr was required of me; it's the con Flickr account, not my own.

what do you like about them?
I love the albums in Photobucket. I also love the easily displayed links, below each photo. It's actually fairly easy to batch upload, if everything's in the same folder. It's all a matter of selecting each item. Command+click on a Mac, Ctrl+click on a PC.
As for Flickr, it's... okay, I guess. It's nice and easy to tag everything, which I need when I upload my con photos (I need to tag my photos with who I am). Batch editing and sets are also nice. It's easy, but I'm used to Photobucket.

what do you dislike about them?
Sometimes Photobucket glitches. It'll sit on the uploading bar. This doesn't necessarily mean that it didn't upload, though. It is also complicated. Well, more complicated than Flickr. But I've been using it so long that it just comes naturally to me.
As for Flickr, I might use it more if I could remember the password for the con account... so I could log out of that, and into my own, and log back into the con account when uploading con photos. ^_^;; But again, I'm used to Photobucket.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
Probably. I've been using Photobucket for lots and lots of years and three separate accounts. And of course, I'd still use Flickr, because that's what the con photography crew uses.

    9. flickr, because they don't employ a team of maiden aunts to have a fit of the vapours whenever anyone posts a body comparison shot, unlike Photobucket. You can post whatever material you like on there, providing the more risque stuff is restricted to private view only. And flickr's idea of what is risque is far looser than what photobucket objects to. I have never had a tasteful nude or body comparison shot censored on there, and I put these in public view.

    10. I see that a lot of people use flickr! I actually prefer photobucket, though. I do use flickr also, however. I think photobucket is easier (but that's just me), plus I found photobucket first so I'm used to it. I don't really have problems with photobucket, but I don't post body comparisons (I've seen this to be a major problem with the site).

    11. which host do you use?
      Photobucket and sometimes TinyPic

      why did you choose them?
Photobucket because it seems more reliable in server performance and TinyPic because it doesn't shrink your photos if it's going over certain dimensions!

what do you like about them?
You can create free account, lock your photo albums with Photobucket (as most other photo hosting sites does), quite simple to use!
TinyPic because of the mentioned in last question : )

what do you dislike about them?
Again, Photobucket shrinks photos going over certain dimensions, TinyPic apparently now is part of photobucket, so if you don't want your photos to be shrunken, you have to upload to the server where you cannot delete or edit it.

would you choose them again if you were starting from scratch/would you recommend them to others?
I would still use them anyway!
They're free and straight forward to use, most of the time, photos posting on forums and blogs would not be so big which exceeds the photobucket dimension limits anyway! (although I still cannot find what the particular limit is)
