Hi! I'm making a custom Black Jack doll and as much as I feel I will be able to accomplish the wig using yarn wefts, the side burns are eluding me a bit. I would like them to be removable, thus was planning on making them separately from the head and gluing them on with Elmer's glue after I finished but wasn't sure if that would hold. I'd like to hear other people's experience from making them and any tips you all may have!
I have a Lupin the Third boy I'm forced to do sideburns for and trust me, I'm just as....concerned as you. If I can find the link to the post I've seen, I'll edit this and put it in here, but I swear I've seen someone with like faux fur fabric take pieces of it and glued it to their doll's face to simulate sideburns, PVA glue can come off and is kinda the doll world standard for if you want something that'll stay but can be taken off. When I undertake it, I'll try to remember to talk about it here for future reference.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one worried about this lol. I know I've seen something similar, I was planning on doing the same tactics i use for wigs with yarn but it is just not something I see done a lot, so it is kind of scary. Most facial hair I see on dolls is drawn on but the 3d element just would fit better.
Yeah same, I will say I feel like most doll wigs for simplicity's sake are hard cap, fur wigs just have like the fabric the fiber is attached to on there. I worry that the hard cap + yarn fiber method will be too bulky depending on the hard cap, so using faux fur only for the sideburns may be easier. Also it may be wise to do the sideburn gluing before the faceup, but I was silly and didn't
What I was thinking was using a bit of plastic wrap and making a custom molded side burns to the side of the face (by wrapping the head in plastic wrap and using hot glue to make the actual wig cap itself), because that's how I do wig caps, but I have no idea how well that would work. I also didn't but I feel if you're attaching it with Elmer's it would probably be ok but it's also so hard to know for sure.
Depending how big you want them but if not super massive, you could glue a few small yarn wefts from the inside of the wig around the ear area and then trim them into the length of the sideburns?
- do you use material as a base? If yes, you can put the elastic band a bit lower and actually draw the sideburn on the material if you want it to be one with the wig, put the glue for it to become a hard cap and then cut out the sideburns below the headcup itself. Just my small suggestion.
I do not, I usually just do several layers of plastic wrap and then hot glue over top, it makes a hard but flexible wig cap. I think I want it to be separate from the wig but that would also work really well, thank you!
Sorry for spellings. The weather here keeps switching and as a meteoropathic person I really feel it. Headcup. Such a silly mistake XD
Depending on how thick you really want them I know many people opt to flock sideburns instead of yarn, at least on smaller scale dolls, maybe that could also work?
That's a really good idea! My doll is 1/3 so I do not think that would look right unfortunately but that's really smart!
I finally did the glueing so I can talk about my method. I first like...okay my guy has a crazy ass hairline so I bought a cheap, way too long fur wig and just chopped off a bit of the hairline bc it was way too big. By some miracle I noticed the scraps I chopped off were the perfect size for his sideburns so after shaping them I just smeared some pva and plopped them on the sides so the wig looks better. I advise you to press down on the pieces so it stays on better. He looks a little bit like one of the male apes from the OG Planet of the Apes but that will be fixed when I chop the sideburn length down.
That's pretty much exactly what I've been planning on doing with making a brushed yarn wig and sideburns! Super reassuring to know it works perfectly, so thank you so much!!
