Hi all! I've fallen into the hole of hybriding... I was wondering, what are your favorite companies that allow you to buy heads/bodies separately? In particular -- not through the secondhand market, but through the company itself, or even a dealer.
main ones that i can think of off the top of my head are dollzone, doll chateau, and dream valley. i really enjoy dv cause they tend to sell even bodies withough the head while the other tend to not the only company i like that doesnt that i can think of is the fairytales unless on event and those are easy to find second hand.
"Best" is going to be very subjective. Is there any aesthetic or size of doll you're looking for specifically? My favorite bodies to hybrid with are from Doll Family-A/H. They're cost effective (at least, relative to other companies), good at posing, and if you order during an event the prices are even lower and sometimes they even offer free jointed hands or heeled feet. They also sell their heads separately too if that's something you're interested in. 2D doll has some great head sculpts they sell separately as well, and I adore Little Rebel's work which have primarily focused on heads.
Doll Family-H also will do custom colors which makes them useful to hybriding bodies. Definitely planning on getting another body from them in the future. Resinsoul will also do custom changes, but I do not like how their bodies are engineered as much as DFH.
Whenever I'm considering a hybrid I check out Alice's Collections to see if I like any heads/bodies that are sold separately. It seems like many of the companies listed there offer heads and bodies separately - Dollzone, Loong soul, Dream Valley, Ring Doll, Maskcatdoll (really lovely bodies and heads), etc. They are usually conveniently sorted by size, so if you are looking for, say, a 1/4 body it isn't too hard to find a few and compare them. BJD - Alice's Collections - BJD Dolls, BJD Accessories I hope this helps!
Hmmm.... Judging purely on the number of heads I have from them, Ninodoll, followed by DollsTown (I would have said RML, but they haven't been around for years). As @Mysstarry said, it's going to be very objective, depending on the style of face-sculpts (and sizes of dolls) you are drawn to. I, for example, like smiley sculpts, which Ninodoll excel at (and Dollstown fails at utterly), or neutral expression sculpts that can be painted to look more cheerful (again mostly a fail for DollsTown, who seem to specialise in miserable, but occasionally come up with a head I can't resist). A large proportion of my dolls are hybrids. Don't fall into the trap that (after 16 years of puttign together hybrids) I fell into - check the neck size of he body against the neck size of the head. It's all very well making sure the head and body proportions work, and the skintone is a close-enough match, but none of that helps if your "standard SD sized" head has neck socket that is too small for ythe "standard SD sized body" you intend to put it on (in my case it was an old floating sleep-head, and headless body I had assumed I could marry up to ge them both out of storage and assembled as a complete doll, and it wasn't until I'd had the head modded to open the eyes, and all painted up that I went to try it on the body and found that it was designed for a much skinnier neck (of a narrowness which was more common back-in-the-day and far less common now). It does mean that I got two new dolls from that floating head (after a llong search for an oldschool second hand body with the right neck size) and the headless body (with another floating head on it.. so it's not all bad. Also be aware that what starts out as a good match between head skintone and body skintone MIGHT not be so good some years down the line when both have yellowed differently. I'm still trying to colour-correct a head that "yellowed" to greenish grey that I had hybridded onto a body which just gained yellow tone as the pink faded. Teddy
Peakswoods sells only heads. I love their aesthetics but they have very peculiar faces, maybe not for everybody.
Switch sells heads and bodies separately, and their heads are basically the main attraction. They have a few monthly heads that you can order at the beginning of each month, and limited heads that are released irregularly and often with special faceups.
I think it’d be easier to list companies that don’t sell their heads separately versus those that do because it’s a smaller number (iplehouse, SartoriaJ, etc). As for “best,” that’s really subjective. I have way more opinions on best and worst bodies versus heads because it’s honestly quite hard to screw up a head. Not much engineering or function involved. As others have said, DFH (which sells bodies separately) is my favorite for male bodies (including companies that sell bodies only with heads). I like SupiaDoll and Impldoll for female bodies and they too sell theirs separately
I get heads via Legend Doll, a dealer, including Granado heads! I like getting the head first with Granado because some of their heads are TINY and some are less so, and it helps to get an idea of how big a body to get them. Edit: I really love Simply Divine and others on etsy but SimplyDivine heads are VERY large so if you want to get a 70-80cm guy, they'd fit that range.
The dealer Alice Collections hosts many doll companies, and most of them seem to offer heads, bodies and various parts separately. Also, even if a company doesn't specifically list separate heads, they might sell one on request. I've done that.
