Aesthetics Beginner Faceups

Mar 20, 2016

    1. Hi all, I recently started doing faceups, and was encouraged by a friend to post a thread here for input. I've only done three so far, and only have taken decent pictures of the second and third (the first was just to get the hang of materials and how to apply them though so it's no big loss). The head I'm working on is a Doll Family H Yehua practice head generously lent to me by my friend so I can learn how to do faceups.
I would love feedback and suggestions of how I can improve, I am using chalk pastels, acrylic paints, watercolor pencils, and MSC UV Cut currently. (This is my first time posting images so hopefully they'll work, if not I'll try again from a different hosting website)
Here's my second faceup, I decided to try out a natural look to get the hang of contouring, I used peaches, pinks, a bit of brown, and a touch of blue with my pastels, I tried to get some hints of under eye shadows going. I'm not too thrilled with the eyebrows and the pencil texture you can see in the details, I'm thinking using acrylic paint instead of watercolor pencils for details will help with that one a bit. His freckles are also a bit streaky... Sorry about the different lighting in the pictures, I was experimenting with what lighting works best for doll photos when I took ones of this head.

For my third faceup I decided to go for a more fantasy style with dramatic makeup. I was worried about going a bit overboard and thus toned back the contouring, but I think that may have been a mistake as the rest of his face looks very blank compared with the eyes. I am much happier with my eyebrows though, though they're still quite uneven (someday my lopsided self will draw matching eyebrows... someday). I also decided to try acrylic paints for detail work, but the lack of paint extender and being that its my first time painting small details resulted in some wobbliness that I'll hopefully be able to remedy next time around. Unfortunately on the very last step of the faceup there was a gloss mishap, that ended in me accidentally taking off some of the face on his right cheek and above his lip... But since this is just a practice face and not a commission or a face for one of my own dolls I decided to take pictures anyway instead of spending a couple hours trying to fix it. I also put some big beads into his eyes to prevent the whole creepy hollow look I had going on there, not sure if it had the intended effect but it still looks kinda neat.

I'm starting work on practice face #4 tomorrow, and I'll probably post pictures of it in the comments of this thread when I'm done! I look forward to hearing what you all think, and hopefully getting advice that helps me improve! Thanks so much!

    2. This is my practice head! I'm personally super impressed by @fairithilien so far and I have agreed to let her surprise me with his final faceup.

    3. These are very nice looking and a million times better than any of my first attempts, you definitely have the spark!

Acrylic paint and brush watercolors are my preference for the fine details, it's really difficult to keep the pencil from looking grainy and it's worth practicing how to control a brush.

One thing I might suggest for the makeup (especially the more vivid colors) is to start with a much paler version of the same shade to get a more subtle fade. You can also use the paler color to downblend the edges of the darker color and make the transition smoother. If you look at open stock pastels (I like Sennelier, Rembrandt are also good, I even have an old set of Yarka that aren't half bad) you can usually find several gradations of the same color and it's really useful for that :) Sometimes mixing some white pastel very thoroughly into your color will work as well, but it doesn't always blend perfectly and you can get little white streaks.

Great work, keep it up! Really creative fantasy makeup, don't think I could pull that off myself :sweat

    4. PS you did really well with the acrylics, (those eyebrows are rad!) and if your acrylics are water based you can thin them with water and not have to worry about mediums and extenders so much :)

    5. Thank you so so much! I'll definitely try that with the pastel colors, and I find I do prefer the acrylics to watercolor pencils (except on the lips) as it's much easier to avoid graininess!
I really really appreciate your input. Thanks a ton <3

    6. I finished faceup number four today! Some of his forehead scales ended up a bit smudgy but as a whole I'm really happy with how he turned out.
But here he is, the lizard man.

Again, I would absolutely love input so I can know what to focus on to improve, I sort of feel like I'm just puttering along with no clue at the moment. Thanks so much!

    7. This is so cool :chibi What did you use to get the scale texture, if you don't mind my asking? It looks awesome!

This might just be a matter of personal preference, but for characters who are an unusual color, I like to blush/contour with a darker or just different shade of that color instead of pink or peachy. Lizards have red blood and pink mucus membranes just like everybody else for the most part, but sometimes they are green or blue or even black around the eyes and inside the mouth/tongue which would affect the lip color and the membranes around the eyes.

Ex: one of my characters is an undead dude and when I did a practice run for him, all the undertones were yellow, as was the blushing, and for the contouring I used kind of a cadet blue with a greyish tint so it created a very interesting green, I liked the way it turned out. I've found that sometimes you can get a little more control by mixing colors using layering instead of directly applying a premixed color, so blue + yellow = green, and you can use more or less in different areas to make it more green, leave it closer to yellow, or move it more toward blue. If you coat frequently between layers you can also erase, move stuff around and create shapes with a kneaded rubber eraser which can make for some cool effects.

I think my last practice run had 15-18 layers, but not hardcore ones, just light quick coats from a good distance to keep from disturbing the previous layer, kinda like spraying perfume in the air and walking through it rather than spraying it directly on skin. If you let it dry well it fixes the previous layer enough that you can even wash mistakes off by running the head under the tap and letting it dry thoroughly. This might not work well for overly clean or polished styles, I like splotchiness but I know not everyone does.

Anyway, sorry to ramble! Nothing to say about your technical skills, this looks very smooth and pretty :D

(Edit: "Vader blue"? My phone is trying to out me as a geek apparently :nowords:)

    8. I used a sort of tulle mesh I found in the remnants bin at Joann for $1. I just cut off a triangle a couple inches wide and held it over the area I was brushing with pastels, it worked rather well!
Yeah I'm actually doing the darker of the same color blushing currently on a different head, but I really wanted to go for contrasting colors on this guy, without going too Christmassy, so I opted for orange and am really thrilled with the effect!
So far I've found 5-7 layers to work really well for me, as I do multiple parts of the face in each layer. For more complex faces I may end up doing more layers.
And thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

    9. Not Christmassy at all, I think the green and orange look nice together and it makes him look iridescent, like a color shift :D I can't remember if it's a split or triadic complement but I ignore color theory like 90% of the time anyway.

I also really love how fine your brush strokes are for the eye creases, I forgot to mention that but well done!

    10. I'm honestly so proud of her. I'm sending her my dolls (that doll above is also my guy) and I'm so impressed w all her work bc I think she really has an eye for faceups more so than I do.

    11. Great stuff, needs an Instagram I can lurk. :D

    12. You are extremely creative and your face-ups look fantastic! Don't be surprised if I send a head or two your way in the future.

    13. Thank you dear! Lol. I was at work and didn't see any of this till now.

    14. Wow! Thank you so much!

    15. Finished ("finished," I'm an idiot who forgot eyebrows lol) another one today. This one on an MSD head instead of an SD like the other ones have been. As always, I'd love to hear peoples thoughts!

    16. This is beautiful, very creative. I like the use of white for the creases. I'm a fan :)

    17. Wow! What a wonderful, creative idea. And it looks gorgeous.

    18. Thank you so much!
She was inspired by a gorgeous watercolor painting I saw, so I decided to try a nebula face. I'm honestly so happy with how she turned out. Poor girl has since been wiped clean though, in order for me to experiment with blushing with metallic paints. Which unfortunately did not work. I need to invest in an airbrush before trying that one again, but that's a long way off, I'd have to start making money on faceups first honestly.

    19. These are gorgeous ! That galaxy one is so pretty. Everyone is all up in the galaxy themed stuff nowadays. I also love the reptilian one. The scale effects look super cool !

    20. Thank you so much dear! That means a ton!

    21. Guess who's back with another face! I decided to try a scar mod this time, I layered glue over my base layers of sealant in order to get a nice raised area, and i think it ended up super cool cause the slightly opaque of the glue really did look like scar tissue, I barely brushed on any red at all to highlight them. I have a different plan on how to try them next but overall I quite like how this guy turned out. As always, I adore input so please let me know your thoughts!
      [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    22. Very nice! I can really see the scarring now on my PC.

    23. I'm not super experienced or anything but I truly admire your work!! :) Of course there are a few things that aren't perfect (such as the eyebrows being not having enough hair but that's just my opinion lol)
My favorite thing about your faceups is the creativity. I'm quite into fantasy stuff and these are so unique and beautiful!! I hope to see more of your work in the future :love

    24. Oh wow. Thank you so much, this is such a nice thing to hear.

    25. The galaxy faceup is my favorite. It looks so magical! I'm really impressed by the lizard man, too. The scale texture is perfect.

    26. Thank you dear, thos two are my favorites as well. I wiped them both at the same time and may or may not have cried a little.

    27. Oooh, the scarring technique is a great idea, and gets the point across immediately. Something to consider is the age of the scars. New scars are pink/red down the middle, where the wound was. Healed scars turn white in the center, but are outlined by pale red (I think because the actual scar tissue is not as flexible or stretchy, so it pulls on the skin around it). Very old scars are just white, and not raised much at all. Not I'm tempted to experiment with this effect...

    28. Thanks for the scar advice! And do it! Scars are so much fun!

    29. I really am impressed by how you mixed the contouring and shades of galaxy in your 4th one! If I were to try the same it would probably end up looking like someone had rolled the head in galaxy-coloured mud lol  Also the way you combined the scars to an eyebrow looks good! Maybe the eyebrows shouldn't be "bald" on such large areas tho.

    30. Thank you!
And yeah I'm not very happy about the eyebrows on the scar mod head, I didn't have any acrylic extender and was having a really hard time getting them to work how I wanted, so I just kinda threw them on there. I just finished my first commission head the other day (I need to post pictures of her, she's precious and I'm very proud) and my eyebrows have definitely improved a ton since I invested in some extender.

    31. Woo! Finished another one this week! This one being my first ever commission! A Dollits Miso, and the owner (Tsuki56) wanted to have her look like she just finished a color run. I'm super happy with how she turned out, and I think my eyebrows have drastically improved (turns out I just needed to suck it up and invest in acrylic extender, works wonders apparently). Let me know what you think!!

    32. It's Mathilde! I absolutely love her :D

    33. Wheeeee I can't wait to make her wig

    34. Her expression is so joyful. I know I wouldn't look that good after a run ;) The paint splatters look great. I immediately thought "I'd love to see a smudge across one cheek or her nose, like she wiped at something." Once I read the description, I thought maybe over the forehead instead, like she was sweating while running?

Looks great~! Oddly, I especially like how the teeth look.

    35. I love this! She really looks like she's run the gantlet on a color run and had a great time!

    36. You've got some amazing talent! I believe my ultimate favorite of yours is the first one. Very simple and natural. Just a personal preference. Your ability to paint the finest details is astounding! The little bits of freckles, the tiny stars, ahhh :love

    37. I love your eyebrows! I always preferred the ones with lots of small strokes opposed to the more flat color. I think the reptillian one looks the best from the side. The scales on the cheeks don't show up that well from the front (or maybe due to lighting?). I LOVE the galaxy one, and the one with the red "wings". it makes me think of a phoenix.

    39. Very cute. n_n Can't wait to send Mister Hyde's head to you when I get him.
