Begginer's journey

Aug 5, 2013

    1. hello!

      I am a complete beginner with this so feel free to give as much critique as possible.

      Day 1:
      Starting work on the face. Ended up working a little bigger then expected. Need to redraw the plans.
      Using the pattern for Aimi doll as reference for my own since I am still learning how to do this.

      looks very bad so far.
      oops
      Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

    2. Day 2
      redid the head entirely for the third time.
      this time a bit more promising.
      Need to let it dry and sand it

      all my attempts so far xD

    4. The head on the right, the third head sculpt, is looking a lot better :D i especially like his nose.

    5. Thanks! I'm trying hard.
      Hoping that he'll look even better once sanded and given eyes.

    6. Day 2 part 2

      Being brave and starting on the body.

      [IMG]

      Doing as much research and studying as possible on joints and anatomy again while clay dries.

      edit;
      some notes!
      notes!

    7. Like the study notes! They are really clear to me :) I should do that lol and I see your making lots of progress haha

      I always do the head last because I know that I have to redo the head at least 3 times before it's something I like... or that fits what I have in mind

    8. The only reason I do the head last is because I like it the best, and it gives me a reason to finish other parts of the doll that aren't as interesting to me:) And I totally agree with InNoTeb, you are making really fast progress, and your notes are super clear. Good job.

    9. @InNoTeb;
      I found them really handy in helping me understand the doll better! I used a lot of refs off my favorite dolls as well as google and deviant art. Just took a few hours to really sit down and look things over.

      I understand. I originally did the head first as a way of getting myself started. Told myself that if I can manage the head, I can do the rest of the doll as well. So far it has worked in getting me to keep going!

      And thanks!

      @EllaG;
      That is a good reason!
      Thanks

      Day 3; Sanded down the head and opened it up to take out the core. Waiting for the eyes to arrive in the mail today and will fix up the inside of the head. Need to get hold of magnets. May find some old ones that I am not really fond of and cut them up since I am on a tight budget.
      Also started sculpting the body.

    10. I get my magnets from these guys! great prices and decent shipping rates
      K & J Magnetics
      I definitely recommend getting the N50/52 strength, I bought some of the weaker and cheaper ones and they just don't hold parts on securely enough.

    11. Day 3 part 2;
      Body was a bust. :[ way too big for the head! So I am keeping it for another day and starting on a much smaller body.

      As for good news, got my first doll eyes!
      And they fit!

      They are actually a dark green but my ipod camera isn't the best quality photo taker.

      @leopardessmoon;
      Thanks! I'll definitely get me some!

    12. It's probably a good idea to resize your plan now then, before you start a new body, so that you have a guide for the right proportions. The head has really come along - it's great that you're not afraid to start over! Keep going! :))

    13. Took your advice and resized the plans! And thanks. I feel that starting over can lead to better things then trying to salvage something that just looks terrible.

      Day 4;
      Worked on the plans. Really sick today so they aren't the best I've ever done.

      also made all the parts. Letting them dry over night before I sand and sculpt them. Really hoping the joints will work. I followed a tutorial but am still nervous!

      Got a lot of head of me.

    14. looking good cant wait to see more progress ^_^

    15. Thanks!

      Day 4;
      Sanded down everything but the torso [it fell apart and am trying to salvage it with extra clay.
      Gotta redo the joints so I made some place holders for now.
      Gotta build up muscle on the limbs and body.
      [IMG]

    16. I use K&J also, with the same recommendation for full strength.

    17. Got it!

      Day 5;
      I was able to fix the torso!! I got it and the abdomen fixed up. Once it is dry I'll add muscles to the back and add a proper butt. Also added a hook for the elastic inside the head. Sanded the limbs and plan to add more definition and muscle to them tomorrow. Espicially the legs. I've barely touched them. Gonna start feet tomorrow possibly and work on hands. Really it depends on all I have to do tomorrow chore-wise.
      Going to also invest in a dremel so I can sand the wooden beads and use them as joints. Just not working so far on making them by hand.

    18. Day 6;
      Sanded down the body but feeling rather discouraged.
      May not do more then this today.

    19. Your poor fingers!

      Wow, you've made such a huge amount of progress in less than a week, it's really cool of you to post day by day development. I like your current torso, it's almost androgynous right now, and the proportions are much improved from your earlier sculpt. The best thing about keeping a log like this is that you'll be able to look back and see how far you've come.
      The joint diagrams you've done are really clear, it shows how much thought you're putting into this project. I would recommend not getting too bogged down with the joints this early on though, wait until you've fleshed out the body and then put them in later. They can be such a headache, and often if you do them at the start, you'll find yourself reworking them over and over throughout the rest of the journey, and that can get frustrating.
      I'm really looking forward to seeing the whole body take shape, and to your joint designs, especially if you do joints in the fingers like in your drawing. Keep it coming!

    20. I really like the shape of the body. It's sharp and somehow alien, but well balanced and quite beautiful. I'm interested to watch the refinement.

    21. Hello everyone. Long time no see. Been away due to school mostly. Decided to retackle this project but do much more research in different areas before hand and better proper planning and measurements. So, let's see where this will lead. :]

    22. Exciting! I get way too sentimental about all my original parts, so it takes me forever to decide to start over on them. You seem much smarter than I am! I admire your fast work. I am incredibly slow, so it took me forever to get as far as you have. Best of luck!
