Sewing Beanie - very simple pattern and tutorial

Feb 29, 2020

    1. Hello everyone!

I was looking for an easy sewing project because it's been a while since the last time I sewed. And what is easier than a hat?
I highly recommend this for people who don't have a sewing machine and/or look for something really easy :)
(I was too lazy to use the sewing machine and sewed by hand)

This pattern is in MSD size, but you can very easily adjust it for other sizes like SD.
      I'll describe how :)

My bjd has a head circumference of ca. 17,5cm (with wig). Since jersey is elastic, the exact size doesn't matter much.
If you want to make a beanie in SD size, scale the pdf before printing. To make sure the size is correct, measure the head circumference (including wig) of your doll. Halve the length and subtract ~1-2cm. The width of one pattern is 7,2cm. Calculate x/7,2*100 and you have the percentage for printing. For example: The circumference with wig is 23cm, so (23/2-1)/7,2*100≈146%.

      Here's the pattern.
It's based on this free pattern (website is in German).

This is how it looks like:

      This is how!

      You need:
      - a piece of jersey fabric (print the pattern to see how much)
      - a thread in the color of your fabric
      - a sewing needle
      - scissors to cut fabric
      - pins

And this is how you sew. It's called "back stitch"

      upper side

      lower side
Since we use jersey you don't have to sew a seam. Classic cotton for example will unravel at cutted edges - jersey won't. So you don't have to worry about that and it makes things a little bit easier :)

A little tip: Pins shall help you, not be a hindrance. Usually it's easier to remove the pin nearest to the sewing needle, so you have enough place to sew.

That's all. Start sewing and have fun :3nodding:

(It's also possible to change the order of the steps. In the original, it's step 5, step 3 and at the end step 4)

      Step 1
Print the pattern in 100% scale (for MSD size) and cut it out.

      Step 2
Take your fabric, I recommend jersey. Lay two layers of fabric on each other. Put the pattern on it and use tailor's chalk to trace the pattern.
Use pins to hold the two pieces of fabric together. Cut it out with ~5-10mm seam allowance.
Tip: If you want the beanie to hang down a bit, extend the bottom of the pattern.

      Step 3
Sew the outer edges together. They're drawn in red in the instructions. After that remove the pins. Trim the the seam allowance to ~3mm. You can now let your doll try the beanie on and see if it fits. Yay!

      Step 4
Fold the lower edge once and fix it with pins. Turn the beanie to the right side. Sew the folded fabric together near the edge. Be careful to sew well because the seam will be visible at the end. After that, remove the pins.

      Step 5
Next is the top of the beanie. Turn the fabric to the wrong side. Put it together as seen on the photo. Fix it with pins and sew on the line you drew at the beginning with tailor's chalk.

      Finish!
I hope you had fun sewing and you are happy with the result :3nodding:

    2. This is great! I've been looking for a simple beanie hat that isn't a slouchy hat!

Just one question. To print the pattern, do I print it portrait style or landscape to get the appropriate size?

Thank you so much for sharing!

    3. I'm glad it helps you :)
The file is made for printing in portrait style. The size is DIN A4.
If you scale it, you might want to print it in landscape style though (or else the instructions on the right will be cut off). It doesn't really matter which style - just make sure that "Scale: 100%" (or whatever % you want) in the settings :3nodding:

    4. This looks super easy. Thank you for sharing.

    5. Thank you for sharing I will use this for some hats for my crew ^^
