HI. I'm trying to make an optional head for hound. His name is Bastian.

Bastian has been cast! See page 5 for the picture!

Here's a quick review of what happened so far:

1. Sandsandsandsand SPRAYSandsandsandsand SPRAYSandsandsandsand SPRAY

2. Made the outer mold...

3. Got the core mold stuck to the original mold. Doh. Ran out of silicone.

4. Cast anyway, Demonllama resulted. The good news is that the core mold would work, if I don't screw it up.

5. Used what was left of my silicone to cast a smaller head. Cast head. Bastito resulted. Pictures are on page 4?

I had tacked bastian onto my other thread, but decided he should probably give him his own thread now... as I've completely fallen for him. X3

Please meet Bastian!



Bastian is made from Super Sculpey and will be cast in resin. I'm still waiting on my sample of resin so that I can start experimenting in coloration. My hope is to sell enough of him that I can put that money towards getting my complete boy(see this thead: http://denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29301) cast by a casting company(too many little parts for me to cast I think, we'll see how it goes). He fits on Hound and is shown on Nathan's body, and in the count from Gankutsuou's outfit. X3




more pictures! He's also an elf! His eyewells are not complete, as they'll be made in the casting process. they need to be thick and strong to withstand the initial molding I think... His "faceup" is just watered down pastels if you're wondering. He still needs another round of sanding and primer spraying.

also, on a sad note... Bastian's head snapped in half. ._. I was dumb and left him on the body, he slipped back and the combined pressure from the head peice in Hound's body and the force of the fall made him snap. FORTUNATELY it was a really clean break and I just glued him back together. It also snapped behind the ears, where he'll have a shim/seam line anyway, so it's not a big deal... I just felt like a horrible dolly mom. XD

Rattimoth: Thank you for your critique! That helps. :3 yes... his nose is a little flat on top, but I did that on purpose. I will be offering free face ups on them probably and would be willing to mod the head for anyone needing it, like softening that ridge. He's wearing old Souldoll 18mm in some shots and 14mm? new ones in the recent shots. I tried Hound's default 12mm and they're too small across.

Planetarium Fish: It's well documented that I have a complete nose fetish. XD Almost all my drawn boys have sexy chiseled noses.

Update on status: WARGH STILL NO RESIN SAMPLE! TT_TT So I contacted Ashbet's friend and got some advise on what resin to use. :3 Sooo... it's going to be a little more experimenting with color than I'd like, but we'll see!

Not sure about the ears yet... his ears are definately thick enough that you could resculpt them into human ears probably without any additions. I'd be happy to try. Depending on how /hard/ it is to make the mold and cast I'll probably do just that as a sleeping head...

I asked around on the Hound group and on doa and it seems that no two hounds are exactly the same skin tone. :{ Some are a little yellower and some are a little pinkier. I'll probably try to match it to my Hound, nathan. But if you send me a hand or something to match it to I can try that too...

I'm hoping to order the resin and mold making stuff either this week or next, I gotta few things on my plate that need immeadiate attention(saving up for narae omg~) before I can happily cast. Anyway! His head is definately a little larger/rounder? than Hounds, as Hound's head is sort of an oval? THe price will probably at or around $100 + shipping. That's what I'm shooting for anyway. o_o;;; I'll take some photos of them together here later this week. I need to do a big photoshoot for christmas. :3

Kiyakotari: Unfortunately, I don't think I can match the tan. :/ Here's why: From what I understand the tan is made by lining the mold with a powder that dyes just the outside of the resin- I have NO clue what that type of powder is and I'm frightened by it. XD;; I'm afraid to try and dye the head that dark a color also as Donn had said that it's really hard to get resin to behave and cast a uniform color through out the more color you add to it. :{ We'll see what happens tho.

I'm going to order resin tomorrow! I doubt it will come before christmas, but heres to hoping.

 

Kiyakotari: I will do that then. :3 I might have to buy more dye... the dye was $10 for a 2oz bottle! o_o; But I also saw that thread where the girl had dyed a head and it turned out real nice. She MSC'd it first. Anyway~

UPDATE!

I ordered a smooth-on resin sample kit yesterday. :3 The dye was expensive. @D@;;; but at any rate, I'll be casting one of the nephilim heads that happens to be my guinea pig for everything, poor guy, to test my mold making skills. X3 It's been a while since I've made a mold. n.n;; Hopefully I'll get it by christmas and by the new year I'll be near to what Bastian should be! The resin is white, so I ordered just red dye, since most dollshe coloring is a pale peachy pink. I will probably rope my best friend, Kathryn, into helping me since she has a /white/ hound. XD MOUAHAHAH... *is beat down* :B sorry. I'm just so excited about all this!!!

 

Donn: Doh~ I just didn't have the cash at the time to get more than one. XD Esp since there's alway sthe chance I'll screw up at it'll be bust! X3 glad you like him!

Kiyakotori: Aww~ We'll see. XD I probably will need to get an extra brown... we'll see how it goes with casting first. :3

ace: Well... I haven't cast yet, just sculpted. SO I'm waiting on the resin and mold making stuff. I'm hoping to have it ready by the end of january. I work at home, so I don't think that's too much of an unrealistic goal.

Well I'm home now, so I should be able to cast right? WRONGO~! I need a scale to measure the resin and mold material. =_= So I have to wait for THAT to come in now.

Also, I sculpted an MSD sized head over thanksgiving and forgot it at my parents. I picked it up while I was home and finished it except for ears. it's a more mature head, and has half open mouth... I'll hopefully cast it too... but it needs a lot of sanding and smoothing yet. It's definately a boy head, and i'm not sure it'll fit on a Minifee body if you're wondering. I tried it on my kid delf and it looks pretty good. :3

 

okay, here's the new head~ It's MSD sized, well, it fits on my kid delf okay at any rate. Hopefully since it's nice and small and I'm not quite so attached to it, if I screw up casting it I won't cry!



He hasn't been primed yet, so you're seeing him rather rough. His ears are really cute. X3 he has a slightly open mouth and lil teeth.

Update: Well I finally got home and worked up the courage to make the mold! I ended up by passing little Bastito up there(who is now primed and clean!), and I went ahead and invested Bastian. I did a sample mold and cast, it was suprisingly easy!, before I did Bastian... and wouldn't you know it? I ran out of silicone after only making half the mold. e_______e;; So now I've got to wait about two weeks before the silicone gets here! It's just as well, I'm still waiting on the brown and yellow dyes to get here too. :{ Gaaaah~ X3

 

rattimoth: Blame UPS! X3 It takes me two weeks to get stuff I order from smooth-on, depending on when they actually ship stuff. Sooo... it might be next month before I get the silicone. *sob*

Kisaki_kun: I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED~ Because today, even though it is MLK day and a holiday UPS still delivered! SO I got the rest of the mold material. And now that i am done with my cheesy nasty hamburger that was so delish I will upset my happy sleepy kitty by getting up and making the other half of the mold!

Much swearing will now commence. :3;;

 

If it works out I sure will. XD Another hour and it should be set up!

 

Oops. the core mold leaked and ruined the whole mold. I cast anyway, to see if indeed the core mold works, and indeed it does! So it wasn't a total loss. :3 I also found out there's a smooth-on distributer about an hour from my house, so when I get enough money I can just jet on over and pick some up, instead of waiting two weeks on UPS.

Chesiretiffy has offered him a home, so he'll be happy. Note that the parts that DID cast correctly(his lips) look pretty good! Damn, I think his lips are my favorite part anyway. XD
