Basic guide for faceups. Made with a quite natural faceup. I will try to add little add ons. Like smokey eyes, colorful makeup and dark colored lips. Info: Questions. Do not pm me please! But post in this thread. Mold. Zaoll muse Materials. my brushes are collected over time. I noticed one of my most used brands is one not sold online. But only that one store because it's their own line. I hope to be able to make a deal with them. My paints and pastels are mixed brands. I paint and colors i used for paintings that i thought be good for faceups ended up in my faceup box lol. [most are reeves tho] Please do post what you've made using this. 1.Sealing. Using msc: [X] Preparation: Put the msc in some warm water, and let it rest for a bit. Take it out and shake it to check if the ball inside the can moves smoothly trough the bottle. Sealing Hold the head in front of you, [you can also put it on some sort of ..stick. But it's better to hold it mid air and not put it on the ground] Take the msc bottle in your other hand, hold it about half an arm away from the head. In other words close to your elbow area. Spray a good solid layer over the complete head. One layer on the inside of the head might be smart too. Don't spray to much, just make sure you press all the way and give the face a even cover. Let the head dry completely, until it doesn't shine anymore. 2 or 3 layer will probably give you the best results if your new to this and use acrylics and pastels. You can seal during the faceup when ever you want. This faceup was done in one layer for this tutorial. Don't forget, the sealer takes longer the dry the more layers you use. Other sealers: Testors. Gets darker when you use more layers. Gets dirty quite quick, and it is best to not use it on vinyl. Gamer workshop. [warhammer sealer] Make sure you have the one made to use on resin! Never used this, but ive seen dolls this has been used too. Darker colors pastel don't seem to hold well on it on each ive seen. Zoukeimura. Never used this, but heard it works very well on tan dolls. Because it doesn't make the resin lighter like msc does. Besides that some people prefer msc and others Zoukeimura. UV protecting sealers. Same as msc but with a UV protect. But there have been some problems with most uv protecting resin sealers. Like the sealant it self turning yellow instead of the dolls resin. And other things.
Pastel works Blush. Take a brush with soft but strong hairs. [so they won't bend like makeup brush hairs do] Take a soft color. Like pink or brown. I am using a soft pastel color red. Make sure their is not to much on your brush. Test it on a piece of paper. Carefully apply pastel around the eyes, the chin, the tip of the nose, upper lip and cheeks. eyes cheeks Upper lip and nose tip. Lips. Apply a little pastel in the color you want to lips to be on the lips. Use a flat, wide brush. So you can fallow the edges of the lips properly. On this faceup i am not gonna fully color her lips. Use more pastel on the edges of the lips. And blend it with the color already applied. You can also put this darker color between the lips. But as this mold doesn't have need for this ^__^' Don't forget to apply pastel under the lip, so the lip looks fully colored :B Mouth corners. Take your thin flat brush and take a dark brown color. Carefully brush the brush from the middle in between the lip to the corners. Make sure tho there is only pastel on the tip of the brush. Clean it on paper first to check if there is no pastel left to mess up the rest of the lip paint. If the line isn't dark enough, take a thin brush with hard hairs and mix some red with black. And apply it where you would like the pastel to be darker. Inbetween the lips, blend it with the lip color. [but this mold doesn't have that >3<] You can use a soft fiber brush to remove pastel on places where you don't want it. Or to lighten it where it became too dark.
Line work. Preperations: Take your acrylics, or water paint. [water paint needs pastel to bind to because it doesn't bind well on msc which is too smooth] Apply a little on a peice of paper, and add a lot of water. Test your brush lines a bit. eye Lid lines.. I like to use pastel for this combined with line work, because it looks more natural. Take your thin flat brush again and put a little dark tone pastel on the tip. Now softly press your brush tip in the eyelid line fold. Eye makeup. Take the thin flat brush, and put a darker tone then your blush on it. [you can take black or brown..but lighter colors would do great] Now carefully apply it on the edge of the eyes, so it creates a thin soft line. This isn't possible on all molds tho. You can manipulate the shapes of the eyes with this a bit. Especially by pulling soft lines into the outer eye corner. Eyebrow background. Use the thin flat brush to draw a rough eyebrow shape. Use a very soft tone for this. It is just a sketch so try to make it hardly visible. In this case she is gonna get soft white eyebrows, so i am using a darker color then i would usually use. eyebrow hairs. Take a lot of water/paint mix and take a thin brush. Carefully apply thin lines with the tip, try to paint lines from the inside to the outside. Brush the hairs slightly up and then softly angle them more horizontal. This girl has short white eyebrows. I will try to do a more detailed tutorial on them when i find a photographer lol. Lip lines. I used my hand as a pallet for this, because the water dried out before i could get too the lip lol. Use a good bit of water. Mix the water with the paint well, so the color is as strong as it can be mixed with a lot of water. Now make sure there is no dust in your brush, and then slowly with only the tip of the brush apply a line from in between the lip to the edge of the lip. Eye lashes. Unlike the eyebrows and lip lines, you can take a bit more paint this time. I often first apply a lighter color paint and then paint a bit darker over it to make it look like it softly blends lighter to the outside. Softly stroke your brush, you might like to stroke a bit up so you get a soft bend in the eyelashes. Work from the outer corner down the eyelid edge. Upper eyeliner. Same as the lashes, less water and better to use a darker color. This will make the eyes beam more :3 You can make the eyeliner thicker, but make sure it doesn't come to close to the eyelid fold. For the eyelid line mix a bit of brown trough black and apply a lot of water, and then slowly and softly draw a line in the eyelid fold. .
Finishing. Testing. Were done with the rough basics. So lets test the eyes and teeth ;3 as you can see.. the eyelashes look really painted on. But were gonna fix that Blending. Take the flat thin brush again, and put a bit pastel color close to the eyelashes [natural color tho] on the tip. Softly brush it along the lower eyeline and lashes. Also, put a bit of red by the tear duct while your at this. Better to do this after the line work on soft and natural faceups. You can spread it a bit over the lower eye lid as well. Teeth part. To make her teeth part look better in her mouth, i am gonna use pastel to color it a bit. Using white pastel for her teeth..and a mix of black and red for the rest. Tattoo Well, this girl was gonna get a big elf like white tattoo. As it is white you can not draw a sketch first. Maybe with white water paint pencils. Take the some white paint and blend it really well with water. Make sure it is thin..but still gives of a fairly even color. Now, it is smart to draw concepts on the face in photoshop..or drawings. So you can see how the tattoo is shaped and how the ends and beginnings are. [lol quite hard to photograph] Now remember to seal 3 layers when your done, so the faceup is well covered. Let it dry for a good while in between layers.
Finished: Gloss. When you gloss, make sure you have a brush that you can control well. One slip and you ruined your work. Apply the gloss on the lips and around the eyes. [not the eyebrows D:] I hope it will help..someone lol
wonderful tutorial! i just find that i can never get my pastels to be as VIBRANT as i want them - like in your pictures! T_T any suggestions?
Just take them and draw on a paper with them, and then take the pastel of the paper. If the pastel just lays on top of the face because you powder it on, you will spray it off with the sealer. So you got to..sort of..rub it in ^__^'[sounds quite rough] Just brush over it with a clean brush when your done, it should stay on ..if not the sealer would probably have sprayed it off. try to.. just take a bit of a brighter color then what you are aiming at. Because your not working on paper, pastel often takes another color then the pastel itself is. So don't be afraid of very bright colors. Just try a very extreme faceup with a lot of colorful pastel work to test what works and what not. also layer the colors, Take a soft color first.. then work a bit darker/brighter in the center..or well where ever you want it to be darker. You can seal during blushing, and then blush again. This often makes the color stronger. It sounds silly, but for faceup.. cheap and basic pastel works the best. It has less fancy stuff added too it. Like more expensive pastels do, so it binds better to paper.. and fancy things like that. Pastel is simply not made to do faceups with, and so the quality of pastel is not graded by how good it is to do faceups. But how good it is to make art mainly on paper. You really got to remember that when you go out to buy pastels. =3= no clue why i made this reply so long. lol
What an awesome tutorial/guide! I always have issues in the eyebrow/eyelash department. What size brush do you use for the eyebrows and eyelashes?
thanks for making it long and so informative! i do layer it, but maybe i will try to get it off the paper next time. and i don't think that my pastels are anything fancy-shmancy so that shouldn't be the problem! i'll see what comes out of attempt!
i gave your face up tutorial a try and i have to admit that it's my best one so far, thank you so much for posting it ! here's a picture
I just finished up my faceup based off of this guide. I'll have to post pictures soon. D: My eyebrows and eye lashes are still my week points of my faceups. How do you keep your eyelashes so thin? This is the old faceup: This is the new faceup: Obviously, the new one is based off of the old one. I followed your guidelines of thinning the paint and also, this was done in only one layer, unlike the old one which had around three or so. I like the blushing on this head much better. Sadly, I still don't like the eyelashes or eyebrows. I think I need better acrylics.
xobrittuhox: What sort of acrylics are you using? I think you still need more water, and use a very thinned out black color and color it with pastel after it dried instead of using a brown color paint and applying it. The brushes you use might play a role..and you probably need a lot more water... and try to cramp less eyebrows on one area. + in most cases it looks better and more natural to make the eyebrow one tone darker then the hair color. I hope to update with a detailed eyebrow tutorial... and start selling some faceup tools ^__^''
I just finished my first faceup using your tutorial as a guide. Most of it was done with pastels and watercolor pencils because I'm not as comfortable with paint. However, for the most part, the lips are painted with watercolors; I still want to use gloss on them. She still needs eyelashes. I wanted it to be very soft and natural, and I'm mostly happy with it for my very first time. Do you have advice for improvements? Thank you for the tutorial; it was a great help.
<<Just take them and draw on a paper with them, and then take the pastel of the paper.>> Quick (very dumb) question - are you using chalk pastels or oil?
Chalk... oil damages resin. If your new to faceups, you better buy cheap ones. Cheap ones have less ingredients added to make it bind to paper and what not, and give less stains. [if it powders on other places on the faceup..more expensive pastel stains are harder to remove.. so give a less cleaner result]
I think the lip is not fully covered, i already putted a note in the tutorial to keep in mind to fully paint the lower lip. Now it looks like she didn't put her lipstick on properly. [and so as if she is wearing lipstick, which is not natural] and try to cover the lips less solid. So they look less makeup like. Don't be afraid to use dark tones, even if the faceup is natural. The faceup in the tutorial is natural..but i still used black. Just blend it with the lighter tones and the black will turn into a shade like brown. Don't be afraid to use a bit more paint for the lashes. For a first faceup it's really good XB, and i bet the above points just need a bit more faceups and you will add this yourself.
I tried to thin it out, but I didn't want to add too much more water. They were starting to become so translucent! Maybe it's the type of paint I am using. I am using PLAID brand Acrylic. It's the kind in the bottle, not the tube. This brand. I will give it a try with thinner paint next time. Also, I can't wait to see the eyebrow tutorial! Thank you so much for the help!
Yes thats indeed the wrong kind, the translucent going acryl that is. Big tubes and pots often aren't the right kind to mix with water. And when using for painting often require a few layers for dark colors. Which you can't do with a faceup. + thet these paints often don't apply smooth, but create quite a thick layer. Arienh's Zaoll Muse.
here's my two that i did, using some wonderful suggestions and tips from here!! i know i can stand to work on my eye lashes still - they are the bane of my existence! and the thin lip lines!
Iules: ~ Well they look really good to me ;3 Good news everyone, Blackrose is gonna visit me..probably soon... and i am gonna ask her to make some pictures of me painting eyebrows to make a eyebrow add on. Tho i will probably make a separate thread for this because quite a lot of people seem to ask help with eyebrows XB
Thank you for the great tutorial. I gave it a try as you couldn't do the face up at the show yesterday. (I would have preferred a professional face up over my own crappy effort). The brows are to high I guess and the lashes are too thick. (that's what you get if you use 5 to 10 year old acrylics because your're too lazy to go to town and buy new ones.....) I cannot recommend using a tiny head for a first face-up. Any suggestions where I can get a hard brush tiny enough to use pastel on tiny heads? I had no problem to apply blush on the cheeks, but no way to paint tiny details with the pastels.
Oh, I have the perfect solution for you... watercolor pencils! They create super small lines, perfect for tinies. And since they are pencils, they are easy to manage! The smallest brush I found wasn't small enough for tinies, then I found out about watercolor pencils. Magic! They easily create the look of real hairs. Plus they're easy to find at just about every craft store. I suggest getting a much lighter brown so they look natural. I use a Derwent pencil in venetian red. There are many other brands out there, though! Good Luck
I actually think you shouldn't start using water color pencils, you might have heard chantal tell you about the AED default faceups and that she was a tiny bit bothered by the lines being done with pencils. It is something that will always be visible and will always bother you. So just keep using paints for that. Practice makes skill, so. If you need smaller brushes for paint work you can look in my tiny shop. I sell some good not over expensive brushes there >__>'' For blush detail, well i must say i haven't found anywhere else where they sell the brushes i use. I am not sure when the next doll fair is, or any possibility to meet. Because i can just buy some of the brushes i use and give them too you. I use them for tiny's and big dolls all the same. So they should do just fine. If i can get a deal with that brush company i will probably start selling them right away in my little store. But i got..quite lucky on a really small deal with the brushes i sell now, but they don't sell brushes like that. I will check with them to make sure next time i run by them... next week friday. *long post lol* Anyway, i don't think you should be disappointed with your work. It doesn't look bad at all for a tiny faceup. Especially on a Tiny!
Awesome! you should've seen my little happy dance when i saw you made a tutorial :P about the other sealants you mentioned. Is it okay to use if resin is one of the ingredients? I'm going to try this out now
Hi Naiara, thank you for your advice, I will sure contact you when I go to the next show or meeting to see if you'll be there, too, for the brushes. By the way, do you plan on a face up workshop, maybe? This is my other attempt, I did it the same time, but I didn't seal this one enough, so when I applied the lashes the glue ate the eyeliner on one side. Today I finaly had the time to repair it and take pictures. I think I wont practice too often as my asthma didn't like the MSC at all. But I had a lot of fun and I still have to do a face up on my Limwha tiny.
Yes that is dangerous, because the resin in the sealer will bind to your dolls resin. And will be close to impossible to remove. I think i had a doll over here ones that was sealed with resin containing sealer. And she had a complete chunk in the shape of Europe on her forehead i just couldn't get of and had to sand it. [she had some more smaller spots...but because it was shaped like Europe it's carved into my memories LOL]
Here's how mine is turning out so far. It's an Obitsu Haruka head and I think it wants to be male... and a Vulcan. I just sealed the chalk and I'm about to start the acrylic phase.
Acrylic phase is mostly done: Yes... I'm making a Vulcan. I have to add another layer of MCS and then do something about his eyebrows.
that's awesome *___* what brand is your gloss? can you tell me a bit more about it? I've no idea about what I should take =/
Thank you for the tutorial, your description of brush types was just what I was looking for. Here's a faceup I did yesterday, not as good as my usual work since my back is out (I didn't move to the window as much to check my work so there are a couple smudges that don't show up on camera). Ignore the random temporary wig.
Here is my third faceup attempt, the first using this thread for help. I'm fairly happy with it, it's certainly much nicer than my first two! I used watercolour pencils for the eyelashes and eyebrow/lip lines, but I shall buy a much finer brush and attempt the acrylic next time. What do you think? The eyebrows are definitely the hardest thing for me to get even and these aren't quite there yet.
I'm a little confused about the sealing process.. first you spray it to create a "grit" and then you spray after to seal it.. but it sounds almost like it won't stay, if you can wipe it off easily. How do you make it more permanent then?
so heres what i did yesterday I defiantly still need some practice but It's probably the best one I've done yet the silver thing on his face is supposed to be a tear tattoo
Looks really good there herme! One suggestion might have been having the tear on the side of his face so that it's maybe not so distracting? Anways, good job!
What do you all think? Give me some pointers. I'm doing another head today, i'll post pictures later.
Here is the head i did last night. This tutorial helped so much. Thank you! btw this head is Obitsu Haruka, and the other head is Dollfie Dream DD 01 Open Eye ver.
thank you for the amazing tutorial. ^^ i was trying to paint my Luv using some suggestions from here. ^^
^^; well I didn't follow the tutorial exactly... combined the two existing ones... but here's draco. ^w^ finished him an hour or so ago~ well not exactly. he still needs to be glossed, and touched up a little, but i"m satisfied...ish. sort of. >3> notallthatpleasedwithhowhislipsturnedout, butmeh.
EDIT:ignore how his eyebrows looks globby, they dont look like that in real life lol ive had this faceup for a while but i used this tutorial lol srry in advance if my images r huge srry again, the only camera i have is my cell phone -_- i really want a nikon T^T
: D! eee i finish my puki's lips using this fantastic tutorial! what do think about??? i like to recieve some real critics : )! before After you can just go to my Flickr and see bigger photos : D!
your tutorial has been really helpful for my very first face up... and I did this the other day. I didn't put on the eyelashes yet, or the gloss.. sorry about the light, it's about 2am when I took this.
I tried out your tutorial thanks so much for it ^^. I tried it on my Zaoll Muse first cause I wanted to change her face a bits. So here is my pictures ^^. s
I tried this today, I'm about half way through amazingly helpful! gah i wish someone would do a faceup tutorial for tinies!! their faces are so different XD i'll edit photos in once i'm done ^_^ looking okay so far. EDIT: the natural light started to go, and I don't have a lamp, so i didn't notice all these bits of dust until I MSC over them T_T a couple of times I drop the faces when the MSC was wet, it made a texture in the forehead which i had to sand out, but then the msc went funny over it, because the layers were too thick in comparison with the no-msc bit XD it will be hidden under a fringe. also i know the eyelashes and brows look disgusting XD i had only watercolour pencil, no acrylics. but I think I can wipe only the lower eyelashes, and touch it up later ^_^ you can't really see the blushing, but it is darker irl. this is the only eyes i have to fit, and no wig yet, so bear with me please ^_^ so.... my first ever faceups...
make eye lashes is just F**** dificult XD!!! but i tried XD! hope you guys like the two face ups i've made XD
This is such a great tutorial! Thank you soo much But I was wondering what you used for the gloss. ~kim
I was very, very surprised, that faceup I was making turned out nice 8| Because it was my first try and all. but. whoa. so, thank you so much for such a great tutorial! My first try to do a faceup was real fun thanks to it, and result is great!

Oh I will bookmark this page. That was really helpful. I enjoyed the tutorial. Everything was soft and easy. Question: Did you spray everytime you finish something? Like after you did the lips did you spray and then moved to the next one?
Wow, looks like a great tutorial! I'm definitely going to use it as a guide as soon as I get my boy delivered to me. ~*Mystaia
I just got my first Bjd,U-noa, last friday. Thank you for the a great tutorial.I will work hard for my Unoa this weekend. ^^
