Basic form/fill - which material do you use/recommend?

Nov 25, 2012

    1. Hey everybody :)

I'm more or less finished with my first sculpture, which I've made for getting to know my new Polymer clay (Super Sculpey Firm) good enough for starting my first BJD project.

Since I want to sculpt the body, legs, head etc. to be hollow inside, I'm wondering which fill material would be the best. So I'm creating this topic to ask you which fill material you use(d) or recommend.

Aluminum foil, wax paper, paper towels, i don't know... I tend to prefer aluminum foil, because it seems stable and more or less easy to remove after baking the clay, but what's your opinion?

Thx in advance for any advice :)

    2. I saw someone (here, I think?) using Crayola Model Magic which seemed like a good idea. However, I'm not sure how it would handle baking though. Might be worth it to try if you can find the stuff in your area!

When I was thinking of using Super Sculpey Firm it was my intent to mold the pieces with Plaster of Paris and then cast in Flumo, which works like porcelain where you pour off the excess, creating a hollow piece. From there, if I decided to go resin, I'd finish the Flumo pieces and start the molding and casting process for resin. Rather a lot of work which is why I'm back to setting up to use an airdry clay. :D

All that said, and using easy to find materials, I'd say foil, smoothed as much as possible prior to apply the clay. I've had fairly good result removing it from the clay after baking if I'm patient.
