Ball Jointed Spider Made of Carrots

Apr 29, 2015

    1. Hi! I've never posted any pictures of my work on this forum, so here goes!

This is the Carrotantula. It's a ball-jointed spider made from carrots, a yam, and a jicama. It was made in 18 hours and 51 minutes.

It didn't pose very well sadly, seeing as it was made of vegetables, but it was a really good exercise in doll making. It was helpful to go through the whole process of ball jointed doll making, so I could get a better sense of direction for future projects.

I wrote more about this on my blog (and posted more pictures) if you'd like to read it. https://marenvancleave.wordpress.com/2015/04/23/carrotantula/

Please give feedback! I'm only a wee lass with little experience, and I need all the help I can get.

Also, is there a better way to post pictures? How can I put them in big?

Anyways, I hope you like it! :)

    2. oh i love this idea (and your blog post) - how did you get the carrot joints so round - lots and lots of careful cuts? i also think it's neat that you used veggies as your medium.

i too have had lots of issues with not finishing things, but i found once i finished my first doll, it was easier to finish a second, then a third, and so on - because that feeling of pride sort of becomes addictive. sadly i can't help you much with the picture thing as i've only just come back to the forum myself and looks like i picked a good time!

    3. Thank you so much! I used a small woodcarving knife to make the balls round. It's surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. Carrot is a very forgiving medium.

    4. that looks amazing! spiders creep me out tbh and I fell for it with yours. don't worry about the image sizes, when you click they grow big enough. I'd love to see other projects of yours, even if they're still WIPs!

    5. Oh, this is awesome and such a fun project!
I looks a bit like a Grammostola rosea, but it might be just the color that makes me think that.

    6. This is so cool! And kind of disturbingly realistic for a spider made out of vegetables, haha. Really good work, that is some carrot craftsmanship right there. What are you planning on making next, out of vegetables or not?

    7. Thank you! I'm afraid my other projects are unpresentable at the moment, but I'll try to post them soon.

    8. Thanks! It was very fun. I didn't have any species of tarantula in mind when I made it. But it would be cool to do a Grammostola rosea.

    9. Thank you! I'm making a 15cm doll out of twigs at the moment. It doesn't pose phenomenally, but it's still fun to make.

    10. That is so weird, and so wonderful. Thank you for sharing this delightfully bizarre project. :D

    11. Thanks!! :)

    12. That's seriously awesome! I've seen ball-jointed spiders before, but not made from vegetables. Too bad it's a perishable material - how long did it last?

    13. Thank you!! It lasted a week actually. It was sad when I had to throw it away. :(

    14. This is the coolest thing I have seen for a long while.

    15. That's phenomenal. I absolutely love him. The medium you choose certainly is original. It's too bad it couldn't last longer. Great work.
