Modification Baby's first rhinoplasty: nose complete May 5th

Apr 13, 2024

    1. Heya!
This is my first ''drastic'' mod, as I've never done anything crazier than the usual maintenance stuff. Hopping straight into modifying the face is certainly nerve wracking :sweat

Spring has sprung, and face up weather is just around the corner! That means I have to prepare my blank faced dolls for painting! First up is my newest girl Monday doll Zhizhi, who is otherwise perfect, but her side profile... it just didn't sit right with me. It's extremely concave, and as someone who adores big noses I just had to do something about it.

First I edited a mock up to act as a guideline for how I'd like her nose to look like on the side. I wanted the nose job to affect her face as a whole as little as possible, just make her side profile more appealing to me.

And then I procrastinated for a week because I was so nervous about this project :XD: But today I finally managed to take the first steps! So far I've added mass to her nose with Milliput superfine. I'll sand it smooth tomorrow and see if it needs any additional mass. I'm hoping to do as little of correcting my own mistakes as possible, but knowing myself it'll be ten rounds of add Milliput, sand out mistakes, add Milliput, sand, add Milliput... :sweat

Now that I'm looking at it from pictures (with new eyes, as my grandma would say), I see that it's slightly crooked from front view :doh ah well, I'll fix that tomorrow.

    2. Hey, if you keep it slightly crooked it's my own exact nose type :XD: looking good! It's really fun getting to fine tune the features for a specific look. Look forward to seeing her with her Faceup and everything!

    3. I'm liking the new nose it looks great. I've sanded down noses before with a dremel, but never thought to add to them. I am looking forward to seeing her with a faceup once you get the nose how you like it.

    4. I‘m curious about what this is going to look like in the end! I really like the profile so far and the slight crooked look from the front actually. :3nodding:

    5. This is so cool! The mockup looks great so I'm sure the end result will too. I'd say the larger nose really fits her side profile, moreso than the OG one did. You're right that it's a little too concave.

    6. Hello!
Here's an update and some thoughts and pictures of the process :chibi
I ended up adding and sanding for about four rounds. I ran into some problems with the Milliput not wanting to stick to itself on the final layer, so I ended up with some tiny pores, but future me managed to patch those up with Liquitex basic acrylic medium while prepping the head for the colormatching. (probably not the most permanent solution, but I doubt it'll escape anywhere from between layers of Army painter)

This is about where I was satisfied with the shape and size of the nose, and from this point on it was just sanding, smoothing and then painting. So pretty much on the home stretch already!

I have to admit, I'm pretty proud of my paint mixing  I wrapped the head cap in cling film and just mixed paints until I had a good shade and then added a tiiny bit of white to make it just barely lighter than needed, since acrylics dry darker. I circled the swatch that ended up being the perfect match.

And now it's just been slowly painting her face! I'm not done with the faceup yet, but I figured now's as good a moment as any to post the (so far) final update. :whee:

I'm very happy with her nose, and gosh she is going to be dangerously adorable :fangirl:

I do already have plans for my next plastic surgery, but more on that whenever there's more on that ^^

    7. This looks fantastic! Most people don't bother with the sanding which can leave mods looking rough but this is so smooth!

    8. Her nose looks great, and using plastic wrap over part of the doll for color matching is such a smart idea!

    9. Perfect job, I love the nose shape! (I also wish I had been as smart as you and used cling film when trying to match paint to resin, genius solution :sweat)

    10. Thank you! I set out to have the nose look as "factory fresh" as I could, I didn't want her to have that 'obviously had a nose job' -bumpy look
Thank you both! The cling film idea came from plain laziness, I use it often to cover my palettes so I don't have to clean them, and when I was getting ready to mix the paints for the nose, I just looked at the paints, the head and the roll of cling film and a lightbulb went "ding" in my head

    11. So cool! There's a real dearth of interesting noses in the MSD arena, and you did a great job with this mod. I daresay you could start a career as a doll plastic surgeon, hahaha :wiggle

    14. Thanks so much for introducing the plastic wrap to test colours idea! I tried it with my latest faceup attempts and it helped a lot :thumbup

    17. Oh that is a beautiful job! one thing I dislike about a lot of doll sculpts is the nose, often being small and, well. doll-like... I absolutely love the end result, that nose profile is gorgeous.
