Attempting to Use Eximbay - not good

Feb 4, 2008

    1. I need more puki!!!! So...last week, I ordered a basic pipi. I got the Eximbay invoice from Fairyland and had forgotten to tell them to send me a paypal invoice, but I thought, what the heck, I can put it on my credit card. I clicked through, filled out all the blanks, hit submit and my card was refused!!!! wo0t! I have perfect credit and unlimited funds on that card. :o*_*:|

I emailed fairyland back, told them the card was refused and asked them to send me a paypal invoice instead. Still have not heard back from them.

Anyway, by Saturday I was beginning to get emails from online vendors refusing my on-file card for payment of merchandise!!! American Eagle, amazon, etc, etc.. I phoned m cc company and they told me that the card had been "frozen" because of an attempted fraud attempt last week. They were referencing the Eximbay transaction!!!! Well, I was upset they hadn't contacted me - whatever! - but really concerned that Eximbay is flagged as fradulent by my reputable credit card company!!!

Not sure if this post is a FYI. Has anyone else experienced this????

    2. Wow, how horrible! I had the same thing happen to my card when I ordered something from Volks Dolpa 18....they froze my card and didn't even bother to tell me. It was a hassle I'd rather not go through again so I'll be sure not to use Eximbay @.@;

    3. my husband had the same problem with paygate. he did his research and found they had a good reputation but when he put his payment through he was refused as well. even when he asked for their paypal address they still wouldn't let him use the card. he talked to his cc company and everything was fixed in the end. cc companies are extra cautious when it come is oversea purchases.

    4. They refused my $1200 charge at first too, but then I called up my creit card comapny and had told them that it was a company that I wanted them to accept. Then the problem was solved.

    5. I highly doubt that Eximbay is flagged as a questionable company. It's the charge that looks unusual based upon your credit card history. If you run something through PayPal to that tune, your card company wouldn't bat an eye; it's because it's charged from some company in the middle of nowhere that looks out of place to your CC company.

I've had highly reputable companies run my CC in the UK to the tune of $2k. It just looked out of place to all the previous charges I've made. (I've even had charges by the same company go through without a problem for a smaller sum, too.)

Just give your credit card company a call. You'll have to verify your identity by asking a bunch of nonsense questions, but once you do, you can tell them to release those holds on your account (and verify all those other charges). You may have to phone the CS departments for charges that were denied, so that different vendors may rerun your card now that the holds have been released. Some companies will automatically try to rerun your card, but YMMV.

It isn't Eximbay's fault that your card is being denied, though; it's just the activity that doesn't seem to agree with your purchasing history that usually sends the fraud department into alert mode.

One final thought-- You can also ring up your CC company and let them know that you will be making a purchase from Company X. They can put a note on your account, so that when the charge goes through, your CC company knows not to reject or hold the funds until you verify it. It does, however, depend on the competency of your CC company.

Edit: Your CC company should've given you a call, but it depends on your bank and whether or not they have the manpower to do so (most banks usually do). I used to get texts, but I asked them to stop sending me those and to call me instead. Once I verify my account information, I'm put through to a representative, and the mess is sorted out within a matter of minutes. Now, whenever I get a phone call, I'm able to release holds by pressing 1 or 2 to verify charges to a computer on the other end.

    6. Actually, not any of this is true or applicable to my story. Yes, I know I could have phoned the cc company and asked them to "okay" the transaction. I chose not to, and moved on. This card is used daily and used weekly in an international capacity. I asked my cc company what the deal was and they told me that the card was frozen because of being "flagged for an attempted charge by a fradulent company." That's why I posted this on the board. Do I think Eximbay is a fradulent company? Of course not. But the fact that a HUGE American bank does...well...that's concerning, isn't it?

    7. No, not at all. Not going to hammer out the logistics in the services provided, but I haven't had a problem at all.

    8. Considering my bank froze my card over a Volks charge (they also thought the charge was fraud), I wouldn't assume that Eximbay is fraudulent. I just posted that I wouldn't use Eximbay because it seems like it would be a hassle.

    9. Thanks for the post on the eximbay Zag I was wondering about the reliability of it too. It is good to know that one may run into such an issue.

Some more reputable credit card companies also flag just for unusually high purchases for the type of store listed (ex. Target Greatland shows up as a grocery store so tryingto buy a ps3 there shows up as a weird $500 grocery purchase and may get denied) or the location of the store charging in relation to the card holder's home address (ex. You live in the US and a single large charge in Korea shows up) As mentioned it could also be that one needs to call the credit card company prior to charging to pre approve.

I think this info is good as FYI in a buyer be awarecapacity.

I'd also like to know if others had similar issues with eximbay.

    10. Sounds almost like what happened when i ordered from luts with my CC. It wouldnt let it go through, but my cc company called me shortly after to make sure that it was really me making the huge purchase from korea. After that it went through fine.

This is a nic eheads up though, since i intent to order myself a puki in a week or so ^^; I'll keep in mind that when i order, it probably wont go through right away.

    11. I used to face that problem once, and it was on friday which, all the banks are closed then til monday! and on monday i need to ran up to the high street to tell the bank about this, then the problem was solved after about an hour... thank god.. the bank was just up my high street... -w-'' phew...

    12. Overseas transactions can sometimes be flagged by your cc company, so they will freeze your card - I had the same thing happen when I tried to purchase from Volks, and I ended up using paypal instead. Afterwards I called my cc company and they unfreezed my account. Now, whenever I'm planning to make a big purchase, I just call them up ahead of time and they'll make a note of it, like I did with my Luts purchase :)

    13. I cant use it at all ..it just wouldnt work for me one bit

so I just asked for a PayPal reciept :) and the cancelled the Eximbay one

then the second order ..I just asked for PayPal

    14. To point out how fast banks are with monitoring, once I paid Luts with credit card via Paygate and within the next minute or so, a bank officer calls asking if I just made a purchase at a korean company of $$$ amount.
It was a bit surreal, as it was just a minute or even less after I hit enter, but I'm glad they're keeping a close eye with these things.

    15. I think the point of the thread, though, was not that banks flag foreign transactions or transactions that aren't part of a pattern, but that there might be something specific wrong with Eximbay.
I use Amex for most of my overseas stuff. They are really good about putting the payment through right away, and except for one time in Austria when the card didn't work at a hotel (I had called Amex in advance and told them I would be traveling in Austria so I'm not sure what the problem was) they put stuff through for me all over the world on a regular basis.
It sounds like zagzagael's card is about as good as my Amex. I would definitely ask them if there was a specific issue with Eximbay, and if the customer service person couldn't answer, ask to be transferred to a manager to get to the bottom of this. Perhaps Eximbay has some vulnerability that's just come to light.

    16. I have never had a problem making charges with my credit card with the Korean companies...but then I'm sure they've noticed that I am a frequent shopper online.

    17. Just wanted to put in that I used Eximbay to buy a Puki and everything went perfectly. :) Though, I did have to switch over to Internet Explorer 'cause it wouldn't work in Firefox. :sweat But, that was an easy enough thing to do. :]

    18. My credit card co. called me after my eximbay purchase to make sure I was okay with it, too...I okayed it, though (this was back before they took paypal, so I had no choice) and nothing further weird happened, it worked out ^^

Of course Fairyland takes paypal now I'd prefer that.

    19. I don't think there's any trouble whatsoever with Eximbay. Just because a cc company flags the purchase for potential fraud doesn't mean that it's the company itself. Now what is disturbing is your bank's inability to call you in a timely manner before they cut off your card. I'd be more mad about that than anything. My bank has called me over fast food purchases. I don't think Jack in the Box is a fraud. But...I go though periods where I won't eat out for months at places like that, so when I stop there after months of not going, it gets flagged as unusual, they ring me up and all is well with the world. My FairyLand payment cleared my account within one day, I had no problems and I even used my Blackberry to do the invoice with.

    20. Just thought I'd mention, sometimes it actually is the credit card. I always call my credit card before I go to Japan, I even tell them I plan to make a large (over $1000) purchase, I give them a specific date and tell them it will be at a store called Volks, and yet every single time I spend more than $750 at Volks, my card gets denied and then frozen. ~.~ I have great credit history and my credit line is more than large enough to handle these purchases, but some cards just automatically decline foreign transactions over a certain amount. (I have to call up the card, OK the transaction and un-freeze it.)

I think we all know Volks is a reliable and reputable company and I know for a fact I'm not the only one who has had this problem with Volks in Japan.

Just so you know anytime your card is declined for any reason, they then freeze it. ^^; Sometimes the card has told me (like the card that kept calling us about a charge for gas in the Czech Republic which we could not return as we were in the Czech Republic XD; ) but often they don't.

    21. Thanks everyone for such great insight and stories!

My point with this post was really to raise a flag that eximbay has been cited - to me! - by a HIGHLY reputable US bank as suspect. Of course I was frustrated that the cc company didn't phone me about the transaction, and it was actually a small one, and that was my main complaint...it was the cc company that told me that eximbay is flagged as fradulent from their end.

It sounds as though my cc company may just be over cautious? Kind of hard to believe...but it's good to know that others have used eximbay and had no issues whatsoever, nor any issues of suspicious activity after using the service!

    22. I think I would prefer overly cautious. I mean, I just got my first doll and it was my first time using paypal and ebay (I got my doll through ebay too). I ran up a LOT of charges; the doll, her clothes, her eyes, wigs, etc. We had our paypal account connected to our checking account and our bank FREAKED OUT when all the charges appeared. We had holds up the butt. They froze the account because I had never made those kind of purchases before. Well, we okayed them, the charges went through and we okayed future purchases, but they still keep freezing the account, and the charges are marked as fraudulent. But I think it's ok. I would rather have my account frozen with my charges than to have the debit card stolen (or our paypal account jacked) and end up with a whole bunch of charges we will have to dispute later.

I also have family who worked in credit disputes for Capital One. She has openly admitted that there are times when THEY don't even know why a card was rejected, and they have to put some kind of notice on the account as to why it is frozen. Since the autorization is all done electronically, a charge could take too long to get the authorization it needs and that could be the reason for the refusal, or it could be that the system just had a hiccup. The point is that sometimes the company is not to blame, sometimes the credit card company is. And that doesn't mean it is not reputable. Everyone has its bad days. Credit cards (and banks) are the same.

    23. Yeah, I had the same exact problem with Eximbay. In the end, I went to my bank (Wachovia) in person, they called the fraud center number or something like that. I answered two questions about my sister, and the next time I tried to make the purchase it went through.

So it just seems that large overseas purchases make banks and cc companies wary, and the solution is to talk to your bank after it is denied.
