ATStudio Dolls

Mar 1, 2021

    1. Just got permission from the mods that they're on topic, so I decided to make this thread for these gorgeous boys.

They don't have a website it seems, but are active on Weibo and Instagram.

      Weibo
      Artist Instagram
      Official Instagram
      Taobao

I have one of the special Baker heads (not the elf version, though I'd love to have one of those too):

Anyone else have any of the gorgeous ATStudio boys?

    2. Thank you @Chikku for starting this discussion.
I do not have these boys but I am falling in love with "Orion" He is very gorgeous and I really like his open eyes face. I hope I can find one (body and head)!

    3. Orion is so gorgeous! Such a beautiful sculpt. I wish these boys were easier to find-- or at least had an international order period. I think she released a body last year too.

    4. Agreed! Orion is beautiful! Its so sad how difficult these guys are to come by:pout:

    5. Ive just snatched one Baker full doll last week. Im waiting for him to arrive. And yes, thank you for making this!

    6. I'm waiting for Auriga to be released as he's super handsome and I love how his face is sculpted!

    7. I also long for the head of Orion or the new Baker. I am desperate that there is no international sale.

    8. Congratulations!!!!! I do know that these boys are very limited release and no international selling (as of now), hopefully that would change!

    9. Their boys are gorgeous :whee::whee:

    10. thank youuuuu! That was what the previous owner told me as well. And hopefully the artist do! They have such amazing dolls! Will post lots of pict and possibly a body review when he arrives!

    11. @lizumi156 I cant wait to see him!! Hope he arrives safe

    12. He looks gorgeous!

They really are, aren't they? :D

Yes, please post when he arrives! I haven't seen much of the body, so super excited!

    13. ATStudio dolls are to die for. I'm also eyeing Auriga, he's such a beautiful, sexy boy! And it seems like he's coming in both SD and MSD size with a new body line. I'm hoping if there's enough people demonstrating their interest for international orders, the artist might open them up for international sale. One can only hope, right?

    14. Completely agreed! I so hope that orders are opened internationally soon

I dont have any camera at the moment, so decided to do just a quick body review on this guy - (cap.hook0101 on insta) ATStudio New Baker in normal skin. The body was just released last year I think, so Im hoping this helps since I barely see any review of this body online.
Resin: His overall resin quality is pretty similar to my previous doll - Granado Lucifer on Vigor 75cm. Kind of plastic/ glossy looking compared to the more matte finish in some other dolls. Resin color is like cream in color, and not too yellow. The doll is quite heavy, though its a given since he’s 74cm. He does not have any seam lines, and he arrived very clean. Ive yet to see the inside of the body though, but the inside of the head as well as the body look neat in general.
Sculpting/ Detail: I love his face the most. He has an open mouth with the upper teeth and tongue showing. He does look similar to most Idealian sculpts. Yeah, the body looks a bit tad like that of the Idealian body, the overall silhouette that is. Though the hands and feet dont come with the extra circular resin part that I think the idealian body has. The neck looks really wide too. He has detachable man parts - one that seems like a peen cup (good when wearing pants), and the regular peen (uncut, yes I had to say that). Overall I love how the body looks. It’s the typical muscular body, though at some angles he looks rather curvy than broad.
Posing: He has no thigh and waist joints, which makes his range of motion limited. He is double jointed. He came out of the box pretty tightly strung, and can sit and stand fine. The arms I think move well, he can touch his face etc. Other movements seem standard. He can barely crouch though. His torso can move back okay. Overall Im just glad he can do basic poses, though it would have been nice if he had a thigh joint, and can slouch a bit better. In short, theres nothing spectacular about his posing ability.
Others: His box is really pretty (not shown in the video). Its very sturdy. Inside is the standard protective foam. I really love his COA as well as the care manual, and how it was placed inside a pretty envelop. It looks really neat.
When bought straight from the artist, he ought to arrive with an extra elf head, and a pair of hands with long sassy nails (or claws).
I like the doll overall. Though I may be pretty biased since I’ve really been wanting a doll with the soom Idealian aestethics. Also, I rarely open dolls inside their original company boxes since I prefer buying secondhand, so this was a nice experience.

    16. His thigh can also be rotated, which is nice. The Granado Vigor body poses well, though the thigh rotation was somehow restricted. Feel free to ask questions on the body, or on the doll overall <3 Ill try my best to answer

    17. @lizumi156 Congratulations! And thank you so very much for your video! I do not have any questions and to me your video show me what I need to know!
I was thinking after watching your video that Idealian jointed hands may not be able to use with AtStudio body. That will be something for me to think about. Thank you, again!!!!!!!

    18. Congrats! Hes so pretty! Newbie question but what are thigh and waist joints? :sweat

    19. @_doll_ingg_ Thigh joints are a division that allow the leg to be rotated /edit: in motions from the hip, such as sitting cross-legged. The waist joint is a division between the torso and pelvis (basically where the waistband of pants would sit) which lets the upper body lean a bit forward, backward or side to side.

I found an article here on thigh joints! Also, a comparison of legs with and without a thigh mobility joint here. (Beware dolly nudity, lol.) Here’s an example of torso jointing with and without as well. Hope that helps!

    20. @Deux Silences OHH! Thanks! I didn't think that the elastic could restrict movement like that. Yes I know what a waist joint is... I forgot lol:doh

    21. Thank you. Thigh joints would also allow the doll to cross legs and lift the whole lower limb without the doll falling. Though it still depends on how its made.

Thank you so much! Even without thigh joints his thigh can stil be rotated, inward and outward tho the whole leg folllows.

    22. Soon I will also have my boy at home, the head new Baker. I'm looking forward to seeing him. I would just be interested in color matching with other companies. I will look for a suitable body.

      • x 1
    23. Congrats! Hopefully the doll will arrive safetly. I definitely think it would be better to hybrid the head instead of using the original body. The body looks nice, but is very limited in terms of poseability xD

I think the Granado Vigor 75cm body, or their newer 75cm would be good candidates. I owned that body before, and I must say the resin quality of atstudio does seem similar to that of granado. Their normal skin might just work with atstudios normal skin too.

    24. I can't wait to see your Baker, @ErikNiceBerg ! Hope he arrives sooooon!!

    25. Thank you very much for your sincerity. I like Granado, it's probably number one candidate.

    26. Congrats on your baker!

    27. Beautiful Boys. I have been drooling on them over on instagram. Need more pictures of them❤️

    28. There are no many pictures under the tag #atstudiobjd, unfortunately

    29. It’s true, it’s so hard to find pictures. I saw more pictures on Weibo, but because I don’t have an account, it only shows like the first page of results. I’d love to see more pictures!

    30. I recently bought an Orion punk ver head, and I'm looking for shorter(70cm) body options. I'm wondering if he'll fit on the Dollshe Arsene or Mystic body?

Does anyone here have an ATStudio or Idealian head(since I assume they're comparable in size) and a Dollshe body they could try the head on?

    31. He needs a much taller and stronger body. He is ID75 class.

    32. I just saw that ATStudio released a new doll, Cetus, with a new body. He's apparently 70cm tall and has fantasy-type feet, ears, and horn! I want to get him sooooo bad. If only there is someone available to order him in groups, I'd sell my organs to get him. Why are the dolls I want so difficult to get! :...(:XD:

      • x 2
    33. I saw Cetus and oh my god he is glorious! She also posted on their IG a new (70cm?) body that looks gorgeous too.

      • x 1
    34. Yeah, the new body and Cetus both look AMAZING! Actually, I heard from somewhere that Moonlight Bjd House (a Canada-based dealer) takes special requests for dolls that are not listed on their website, you just have to contact them to source your dream doll for you. I'm not sure if this is truly accurate, but I've asked the dealer today if she can order Cetus for me, so if I hear back positive response from her, I will post her response here.

    35. I'd love to know! I asked Clover Singing once, but she said they were too popular / hard to get for her. :(

      • x 2
    36. Will do! I wish I could understand what's written in this figure. It seems to have important information about Cetus' order, but I have no idea what any of it means...

    37. @MJKKJM You can download Googles translator phone app and translate these types of pictures that way. The app uses the camera on your phone to scan for texts and then you can select the parts of the texts you want to translate.

      • x 2
    38. Thank you so much for this info! Never knew you could translate text on pictures, thank you :)

    39. I love the new dolls! I hope that they're sold internationally soon!

Also good to hear that Moonlight House and Clover Singing offer that service

    40. Can someone please explain the picture to me? I don't really understand some things. :...(

    41. It’s the sales info for his new 70cm doll at Beijing doll expo. The sale has been closed.

ATstudio is currently experiencing an crisis now...

    42. Is everything alright with them?

    43. My Chinese isn't great, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think they were accused of copying Soom's Pharaoh with their old Baker(?) head.

      • x 2
    44. There are a lot comparisons of various heads, they do look very much alike. For those who are not familiar with Soom (me for one), chance of mistaking that as Soom are very high. Personally I don't find this acceptable. It's heard that some went asking Soom. The discussions/debates are very heated in East Asia. Many distaste such approach, which personally I understand.
It is found that the "maker" personally sold a lot of Soom heads in secondhand market, and has disconnected the selling account from his weibo. Many see this as a very suspicious act, owned Soom and produces very Soom-alike heads.

    45. Eh!? At best Narmer and Baker have similar noses.

I don't feel having a similar style is the same thing as copying. There's only so many ways you can sculpt a stylistically attractive beefy adult male face. As long as the head is not a direct or modified recast artist should be allowed to pursue the styles or stylizations that they like.

    46. There are some comparison photos going around showing how similar the heads are, but I don't think they're fair because the heads aren't placed at the same distance from the camera. Hook posted their own comparison photo where the heads look more different, and the Baker head is a lot smaller than the Soom Pharaoh head.

I personally don't know what to believe

    47. He may use zbrush to modifiy original head from SOOM. For example, I use zbrush to do a original model from SOOM, next I modify a little bit at nose, chin, the measurement of the head => Got a new head with the same style. I don't know it could be plagiarism or not at BJD artist's world.
When I followed the drama on Weibo, many people pointed out that he did the same way in the past, but when he released oversea, he became famous by oversea support.
I am waiting an announcement from SOOM to decide my support.
P/s: not only head, but also 74 body of ATstudio was reported that they copied from LLT ballerino body a month ago.

    48. Let’s put it this way, his creations are practically all accused of plagiarism now.

I don’t know what to believe.

    49. I was very confused when I saw Baker of ATstudio beside a doll of Soom. They looked so similar.... I thought that both of them from Soom until I saw the tag....

    50. @Constance @tiyama Thank you for the explanation! I had seen a couple of posts on Instagram that made me wonder. If it’s okay, I can link to some of them here.

An IG photo comparing Baker and Narmer. /Edit: Here’s the full thread from a Korean Twitter user.
      • A comparison of ATStudio’s Tengo and Hyperon, (old?) Baker vs Amor, and another head with Albin. Superposition from the same Twitter user.

Hook/ATStudio’s IG defense photos, also posted on Weibo and Twitter. There’s a lot of discussion in the Weibo comments, plus some owner comparison photos.
/Edit: Another post from Hook’s Weibo, showing the physical handmade sculpt.

I don’t know if Soom has yet released an official statement.

      Keeping an eye out for additional posts on Weibo. I used 哈克自制 (Hook handmade) to search for more of the sculptor Hook’s/ATStudio’s works. I hope the matter can be resolved amicably. ;-;

    51. Accusation on copying llt ballerino body is a bit far fetched for me tho. I own both body, and as can be seen from the photo below, atstudio body just doesnt look like a copy of the ballerino body. Timeless body looks more close to llt ballerino than atstudio body if you ask me.

Also, to those that have seen the accusation picts, dont you think it’s poorly done? Idk, it seems like they just compared digital picts of the sculpts, even to the extent of resizing the images to fit the id (idealian) head sculpt sizes, which is just super misleading. They did not even put measurements or scales to say that the heads are not the same size. Now, looking at the headsculpts, they do give off the same vibes. I think this is the case since atstudio artists have done a lot of soom idealian head faceups in the past. I would get if they wer inspired by those headsculpts. None of those heads look exactly alike though.
For the body. They were comparing literally contour lines, which is really problematic. Dont all realistic sculpts have the same general body lines and stuff? I dont have any soom bodies, but i see them a lot online. I really dont think atstudio body is similar to them, aside from the fact that both ought to be realistic bodies.

One more thing that bothers me about this issue is that, why is it just surfacing now where in fact, atstudio artist have done so many releases and even attended conventions in the past. They even openly faceups idealian heads in their ig account. I doubt soom is not yet aware of this artist. So why hasnt soom done anything about this in the past? Unless soom does a thorough inspection of this issue, ill stand by atstudio.

Also, when two sculpts look alike, let us not be hasty into saying that one is a copy of the other (holds true for a lot of companies and artist dolls, not just in this case). A lot of head sculpts literally look alike. It is just in this case where the overall vibe of atstudio headsculpts matches with that of soom idealian. Though it would be too much to say that they are literal copies. Atstudio artist posted progress of their handsculpting of old baker headsculpt. So i think the similarities are more of being influenced by soom idealian, rather than modifying or copying the same sculpt.

Hello. Can you direct me to sites or posts regarding the selling of second hand soom heads by atstudio artist? Or might u just elaborate this. What was the issue here tho.? Did the artist scam someone with those sales? Please do enlighten me. Thank you

I think the oldbaker head is handsculpted as what ive seem from the progress pictures posted by the artist on their insta and fb acc. So I dont think atstudio artist modified the original narmer sculpt.

    52. Yicen, yicen061 in instagram, an artist and sculptor is also being accused of plagiarizing from soom. They openly expressed their dismay about this, and have clarified the issue, as well as posted evidences that they have not copied anything from soom. I kinda pity them since they are small time artists and these mere speculations could literally drag their career down.

      • x 3
    53. I am saddened to see this controversy happening to a lot of artists nowadays. I can't side with anyone without truly knowing what actually happened, but I feel like having similar size measurements and build (slim or muscular) do not provide enough evidence to claim that an artist has copied another's work. After all, doll bodies take after human bodies and artists are likely to sculpt things that they personally consider as beautiful. I think artists are just following wide-spread beauty ideals in the society rather than producing copies of someone else's work.

Also, I just got a reply from Moonlight BJD House saying they currently can't get their hands on ATStudio's Cetus because of this said controversy, so they are also on the look out to see how this issue gets resolved.

    54. This is a fair comparison of the heads: 微博

      • x 2
    55. There were ideas on Weibo that those pictures couldn't show that they don't copy. Some people said that although ATstudio copy or borrow excessively, it is unqualify for an artist. They don't want to support more.
About the body of ATStudio, there are more evidence but I can't translate enough clearly.
I am still waiting more information. This guy are still upload on Weibo and Instagram Login • Instagram

    56. Looking at these pictures, which are very fair comparisons, the similarities are there. Of course, they're not the same, but seeing that the artist got many accusations with a lot of his sculpts, it is hard to ignore the claims as just baseless hate. I'm going to withhold my judgement until Soom releases their official statement.

    57. F
For now, it seems that waiting for soom’s statement is the best way to put all arguments to rest

      • x 1
    58. Indeed, this comparison is a lot better than just simply superimposing their pictures. Now that this was given, I dont really see any similarities at all apart from both having the same monolid eyes characteristic of east asians. At first i thought the nose looked the same, but judging from the side profiles of each, there's nothing similar at all. I think its easy to just say that two sculpts look alike based on the final product. Cause whatif both are aiming for that east asian look. And at this point its safe to say that atstudio would indeed be inspired by soom works since they do a lot of faceups on soom idealian heads. Though Im sure if you put another same scale east asian looking sculpt beside them, it would also have that same overall east asian vibe or feel. I think what should matter more is the process that goes into creating that particular headsculpt, because thats what would really determine if atstudio really copied from soom. And as ive seen from atstudios insta, they sculpt their works by hand (at least those sculpts that are in question), sot hat would eliminate the speculations on modification and tweaking the narmer head digitally.

The best way to look at this issue is to question the process, not the final product. And as im seeing all these progress pictures provided by atstudio artist, they literally would not spend a year or two just copying someone elses work by hand. Im quick to defend atstudio cause apart from the fact that i have one of their lovely dolls, if this issue is proven otherwise, we would not be able to erase this slander just like that. This might as well affect their sales and the release of their works in the future too. So let us not be quick on labelling them as copies. Waiting for sooms response would indeed put an end to this, but with all those proofs coming from atstudio, im already seeing how this would end :)
