Atlanta Ball Jointed Doll Convention, Georgia

May 30, 2016

    1. I hope to go this year! It looks tons of fun!

    2. I've been waiting to go, I've met the wonderful lady who helps run it, and she seems very passionate.

    3. I'm going. I'm pretty sure my second doll will get here before November- "knock on wood" so I can bring both of them with me.

    4. The website info seems to all be from last year....I've been looking forward to hearing more about the convention after reading about it on Angeltoast's web site this spring. Does anyone know if there is current info on the upcoming event, I'd love to know that it is going well for this fall. <3

    5. I kind of assumed the vendor info was correct, but I guess it might not be. I heard about it through DollAKon....There's several of us from STL going this year! I've never been to Georgia...so that'll be fun.

    6. I've been watching their Facebook page for updates and they have mention more info should be coming soon. For the longest I thought I'd missed out on the workshops until I realized those were from last year XD.

    7. Thanks for the info. I was confused when all the info was for 2015. If you see any updates, will you add a new comment here? I heard about the upcoming event when AngelToast announced she & Azurielle would be there & were going to be Luts reps. <3

    8. My GF and I will be going and we're doing two panels this year, one on the introduction to vinyl dolls and one on the Smartdoll. We did the intro to vinyls last year and a lot of people had fun with it. We had a great time and are looking forward to doing it again this year!

Also, we know someone who is working with the event organizers to help redo the website so that info will be more readily available and gets out to people faster and more accurately than before. Keep an eye out on Facebook as well as their main page so you can see who is coming as far as artists and vendors as well as what kinds of panels will be done.

The days for the con are the same as last year, the weekend before Thanksgiving... November 18th, 19th and 20th.

    9. I'm planning to go. I went last year and enjoyed myself. Had a great time but I'm looking forward to this year being more organized. If anyone would like to room with me feel free to pm me. My original partner had to cancel.

    10. I've been thinking of going . How big is the con? last year's photos make it look like they were only 12 or 15 people there.

    11. Last year there were between 35 and 45 registered attendees and that's not counting any of the vendors or artists. Yes, it's small by most standards but that's why we want as many people to come as we can get so that things will be bigger, better, more fun and continue to grow each and every year. I've been in contact with most of the people running it and so far things are moving along well. The website is getting ready to be revamped and made easier to use so definitely look forward to that. And there will be more artists and vendors this year too so things are looking up for sure. If you're on the fence about it just hop off and come! The more the merrier as they say! ;)

    12. Hi, I'm a newbie who lives North of Atlanta and I'm trying to get information about the Membership requirement listed on the Convention site. This is probably a silly question, but membership to what, exactly? I tried emailing the address on the website but it's been a few days with no reply.

      Thanks in advance,
      -K

    13. Membership just meas a pass to get into the con, with out a pass ypu cant go to any of the con events

    14. CoolScaryGuy is correct, a membership is just their way of saying a pass. All you need to do to purchase one is scroll down the main page until you see this:

<Passes to the Convention are for all 3 days! Use the PayPal button below to purchase.>

Click the "Paypal" logo and that will take you to the page to pay for a pass. The pass covers all 3 days so you don't have to worry about getting day passes separately.

    15. Thank you for clearing that up. I really appreciate it.

    16. It would be great to go but I am waiting to see what the events will be etc. I am going to the Modern Doll Collectors Convention in Sept in Louisville, KY. and this will be my first doll convention. It is exciting to think about connecting with like minded doll people.:)

    17. That's cool that the con in KY will be your first! I hope you have lots of fun there!

Keep an eye here tho for updates. As soon as I hear what's going on or get any other info, I'll be sure to post here with it.

    18. I didn't know there was one!! Sigh I need to find the web site!!!

    19. If you mean the Atlanta one, there's a link in the first post in this thread. ;) Here it is again tho in case you haven't found it:

      http://atlantaballjointeddollconvention.com/

The website is getting upgraded soon so that it will be easier to navigate and see updates so make sure to keep checking it to see those!

    20. Thank you!!

    21. I would love to go! Currently frying to move to Florida from up north...so a lot depends on that. Once I am in Florida though it seems I will be closer to many more doll events!

    22. Most doll events would be in Orlando or Tampa areas, nothing I know of in Jacksonville where I live

    23. There are a bunch of us coming from south and central Florida! I can't wait to meet everyone! I'm running a furniture workshop and possibly a beginner sewing workshop :)

      • x 1
    24. Ooooo! A furniture workshop? I'd be VERY interested in going to that! Have they given you a date and time for when your workshop will be? I'd love to go to it but I'm doing two panels myself so I'm praying they aren't at the same time as yours.

    25. I'll find out! :D my friend is on staff so maybe we can arrange it so they don't conflict!

    26. I just noticed it starts on my birthday!! I think I'm going to have to attend this!!

    27. Hey all will post a BIG post on this on here but here is a list of panels, this is tentative right now but MOST if not all of those will be at the convention...

Tentative list for Panels, workshops, and events for 2016

With so many different sculpts and sizes, it can be difficult to find clothes that fit our dolls well. Have you ever wanted to sew for your doll, but simply couldn't find a pattern that fits? In times like this, you need a properly fitted sloper to get started. A sloper is a type of basic pattern that is used as the building block for all other pattern making. In this Workshop we will go over what makes a sloper, why it is important, and walk step-by-step through the process of making one. 60 mins

    30. Wha!?! Aleathia Burns is an old friend of mine. I'm gonna go glomp her on facebook. :XD:

    31. Can you pay an at door price? My friend and I are possibly going but we both are attending anime weekend Atlanta as well so paying for both cons a head of time will be hard. Does anyone know what vendors will be there?

    32. How are we getting our "ticket" so to speak for the convention or are we just checking in when get there?

    33. It is of the utmost importance that anyone who is interested in going pre-registers and books their room now. Whenever pre-registrations are low and hotels aren't booked, convention organizers have to decide if they are going to pull back or not. We need about 175 pre-regs.

    34. I finally got the details cemented for my furniture panel :D The signups should be up in the next day or two but I'm really excited!!!
      Here are the details:

      • x 2
    35. I have boys that are 70cm... These will be too small for me but I want to sign up to learn the basics to make a bigger one

      • x 1
    36. I can provide a 70cm kit as well just message me when you sign up!

    37. Oh man, that looks awesome! I am soooo down to do this! I want to do the Premium couch for MDD sized girls. I think those are MSD sized or close to it? They're around 40cm or so. I'll definitely preregister for this!

Do you know what day and time this will be? I do hope I can make it without my own panels getting in the way....

    38. Thank you! When do we get to signup, the web page keeps showing 2015???

    39. I'm not sure, I think they won't be scheduled until right before the con.

I'm not sure, I'll contact the con chair and find out when it will be updated!

    40. Also looking for more updated info on this year's Con. I look forward to seeing it so I can plan my weekend.

    41. This is very hard for me to write but bear with me and please read this through.

The doll convention has been something I put my heart and soul into, something I wanted for the doll community, and something I wanted for the artists to showcase their creations.

I think in it's short run we succeeded in that to some degree.

We brought panels that had'nt been at some conventions, we had a ton of fun and folks kept pitching in and helping it grow.

I don't think I have ever had this awesome a group of volunteers to work with ever and they deserve so much thanks and such from me that I don't know if I will ever be able to repay them.
All of them have been with us since day one in support and encouragement.
Nothing is ever perfect and we've had those who were not happy with the con for one reason or another but the MAJORITY embraced it and wanted it.

Sadly things often don't work out the way we want and today I am having to write that as of the posting of this letter we are canceling the convention.

The reason for canceling is that we don't have the money to fund it this year not without going deep into debt.
There are many factors as to why this happened the main being that we fund this mostly out of our pockets and past convention fundage.
Sadly last year at end of convention we were 4,000 in debt.
There was no overage to put back into the convention everything went to paying the hotel at the end of the convention. We even took funds out of savings to pay for the convention.

And this would have been fine as Kip and Jen usually put aside money each year to put into new business endeavors.
However heading into the winter we lost several of our major shows we do, then several other shows, we sell clothing and dolls at conventions, were miserable as far as us making the money we needed to survive on. If one of our major shows had done better we would be having the convention however show after show after show just did'nt do what it needed in revenue and in the end I cannot ask Kip and Jen who fund the conventon to go into winter again not knowing if we can feed ourselves, if we can pay mortgage etc.
So we had a decision and that decision though hard to make is that we have to cancel the show for this year.
We HOPE that at some point we can bring it back but right now we cancel.

What this means for those of you who have bought tickets?
Beginning Monday we will start refunding everyone money paid for attendance, dinner with Peter Beagle, and vendors.

We ask that if you have any issues getting refunds for hotel or air fare to contact us via email so we can figure out what to do on that. We are hoping this is early enough that things will be ok on both airfare and hotel .

For those who bought pre reg tickets.
So many thanks and so much love and I am sorry that I cannot give you the convention you wanted.
We will however be sending you the goody bags that were going to be given to you.
We will contact you via email to get street addies to send the bags to but we wanted you to have them as a thank you for supporting us.
We will also be asking you to include what doll sizes you would like to see for your goody bag.
We intend these to be the best goody bags in content as a thank you for the support you have given us over the years.
      We do appreciate it.

I am hoping this is not the end.
We are hoping this is not the end.
We will keep you updated on all things and as always we will be honest with you on how things are going as I have been from day one.

    42. I've also been asked to let everyone know that Angeltoast will be at Nekocon this year.

    43. I'm very sad to hear this news. Perhaps a smaller meet up could be arranged for that weekend?

    44. Yes I am also sad :( But there is talk of possibly hosting an online event for all the planned workshops and I'll be putting on the furniture workshop for Nekocon two weeks prior instead!

    45. Some of us over on the Dollfie Dreams forums are talking about doing that. We've asked for peoples input and ideas who were flying in and planning to come for this in hopes they might still come down for at least one day. Hopefully we can figure something out so that something can be salvaged from this. If we do decide on doing something, I'll update here about it.

It seriously grieves me to hear that this convention got cancelled. I had such a great time last year and we were looking forward to doing our panels again this year as well as seeing old friends and making new ones. I understand why things happened like they did but that doesn't mean I have to like it. If this convention can be brought back for next year then PLEASE let us know about it so we can try to figure out a better way to set it up so no one has to eat a loss like this time and last. With enuff people helping spread the word and enuff pre-planning, I *KNOW* we can make this convention a real winner for everyone.

    46. I'm upset about this, yeah I'm getting a refund, but I really wanted to attend this convention as it was on my birthday & a gift to myself. I loved the idea of going to the workshops & learning things to make my enjoyment of bjd boys lives better! I was going to bring my newest boy with me!

    47. Hey guys I hope its ok to post this, but some friends and I are still going to do some workshops and panels in Orlando, FL. We found the perfect venue and it will be held the same weekend.
Here is the link if anybody is interested. I know most major airlines will reroute your flights to another major airport for a fee, for those with nonrefundable airfare!

    48. Hi all! Actually, I'm not able to make it to NekoCon this year, looks like that was a misunderstanding. Hopefully next year! :)
