Hey there! So uh..... I kinda wanted advice on making a specific style of clothing that I am unfamiliar with (laughs nervously in stupid American). That style is (unsurprisingly) the Chinese hanfu. While I did find a website dedicated to hanfu patterns, I am having trouble figuring out how to sew these garments as well as what style I want for the doll. I'm thinking of something masculine as well as regal, but I wanted a juvenile twist, so I am planning on adding some elements of lolita street fashion to get this effect. Is there a hanfu style that matches what I'm looking for as well as a way to make this work?
If you're looking for a lolita influence, you'll want to look for Qi or Han Lolita, which is inspired by hanfu.
When I make hanfu/hanfu inspired garments, I refer to TT Duong’s Hanfu Pattern Making. The linked listing is for the imperial/American inch, but there’s another one that gives measurements in metric. This book teaches you to draft patterns to size so it’s really good imho.
Seconding that book rec! I specifically bought the metric one for making doll clothes. It has a lot of options with very straightforward diagrams and instructions. It may be easier to follow if you are already familiar with some pattern drafting, but since hanfu tend to not have a lot of shaping involved, it's not necessary unless you want to make the more modernized versions with inset sleeves.
It depends on a few things... because the two things you mentioned ("Masculine and regal, but juvenile" and "elements of lolita street fashion") do not seem to mesh with each other. I would recommend you to look up examples and inspiration first before starting to draft patterns. As to "how to make them", the Youtube Channel "Lomi's Playground" had two vids on how to sew a hanfu: If you're going for "Lolita-style" hanfu, you'd be looking at either Qi Lolita (based on the Qi Pao) and Han Lolita (based on hanfu). But both are very feminine, definitely going against the "male, regal" look you mentioned first. If you're looking for "male and regal", you might want to look into Fei-yu-fu ("flying fish clothes") J·N Feiyufu Ver. It's the uniform of Ming Dynasty imperial guards. Good luck!
Hehe, I guess I probably worded what I said poorly. I meant a men's style of hanfu, because there are gendered styles and whatnot. I wanted a style for a man, but I wanted a cute/feminine twist with a Han Lolita style modification. When I mentioned the "masculine and regal" look, I meant something for an emperor or prince, specifically. I have to say though, that the Feiyufu you mentioned is good looking.
I have honestly not seen what you are looking for before. But then again, I am no expert on either one. But I did find this website here: A Perfect Combination Of Hanfu And Lolita Style - Hanfu Collocation 2020 - Fashion Hanfu which may be of use to you. Maybe check that out?
I decided to add an update: This article has exactly the kind of style I am looking for in a pattern i.e. the Mianfu, a style worn during the Han Dynasty by princes as well and nobles. What is the Han Dynasty Clothing - Newhanfu Now I just need to find myself a pattern (then modify it with the appropriate Han lolita vibes).....
