Asian looking head and 65 cm "corroded bronze" body

Mar 5, 2012

    1. The Joint

      WIP - 65 cm head and "bronze"body
I haven't yet posted my work here, so here is my current project. (I never take many pictures while working cos I like to work very fast and having to clean my hands to take pictures sometimes seems to much effort …)
Anyway, I have started on this Asian looking male head suitable for a 65 cm body plus the body at the end of 2011 … actually to test the material - Fimo light air. It's great stuff to work with, it has a silk-like texture, is odorless and dries quickly. On the downside it is very light and not strong enough for doll that are intended to be posed and played with. It might work for a dummy though.

      Torso and Asian looking head.
I sculpted the head rather as a side project, the body is actually intended for another head …

      Body
I wanted a slim male body with not too much muscle. [IMG]

The body is actually intended for my tan LLT Roderich head. I couldn't find a suitable body in the 65 cm range, so …

To stabilize the material, I added a structuring paste actually intended for acrylic paintings plus brown color. The paste has a weird fibre structure and becomes very hard. While sanding off the structure, I found that it actually looked quite interesting the way it was - esp. with the tan color. So I decided to make a body that looks like corroded bronze.

I was undecided about the joints. I am not too happy with the look of double joints. I tried to make single joints that are flexible enough for the hands to touch the doll's face and knees that would bend more than 90 degrees. Still not happy with the results. I guess, next time I construct a doll, I'll start with the joints.

Color test: The body is painted with varying shades of brown and some metal shine on some parts.

      Feet
I started sculpting the hands and feet with Fimo Light Air, but the material is too weak for such detailed work.

I am currently redoing hands and feet with Milliput Terracotta - working out fine so far … Luckily, the material is exactly the color I need!

Here's a picture of my character Zooey LLT Roderich) with his new body. It has its imperfections, but I am quite happy with the results. Next time I'll work with stronger sculpting material for the whole doll.

The body so far: His standing pose looks a bit awkward since he is not properly strung and doesn't have feet yet…

This is my status quo. Tell me what you think. Do you like the idea of the corroded bronze?
I'll post pictures of the progress of the head, body and the hands and feet …

    5. Hi, thank you all for your comments! I didn't have much time to work on my man recently, but his feet are almost finished and his hand are making progress. I've also been working on the head. I haven't taken any pictures yet, but I'll post some soon.
