Tutorial Army Painter Matte Anti Shine Application

Oct 4, 2021

    1. Hello! I sealed one of my BB bjds yesterday and I'd like to share with you my experience.

I have used MSC in the past many years ago. Many. Many. Many years ago. This time I wanted to try a different sealer. I went with "Army Painter Matte Anti Shine" It was recommended as one of the better varnishes for sealing. I wanted to try it for a couple reasons, less foggy or cloudy-ness from multiple layers, and it comes in larger can than MSC.

I decided to seal my dark tan, Mian Mian first of the two that I have.

This is her color straight from the manufacturer. I used 70% isopropyl to wipe her down before application.

Dental floss was tied to her "S" hook then the cap was put on with the floss sticking out. That way she could hang without dealing with the floss/string/wire, getting in the way. I tried to have her splayed out in such a way that the varnish was able to contact all sides.

My first attempt was waaaayyy to far away, apx 18inches/45cm The varnish basically dried before settling down on my doll. This made her look like she was covered in powdered sugar.

I used a soft watercolor paint brush to dust her off. It came off really easily thankfully.

My next attempt I decided to hang her from a different structure so I could get all sides in one go. I'd say this helped out with the application. For the first official layer I tried to stay about 12in/30cm away from her.

The parts that look more shiny are due to getting a bit too close. Luckily there were no drips.

I waited maybe 15 or so mins in between the first and second layer. Then maybe another 15 to 20 mins before moving her back to her previous location. This way she could dry mid-air for a few hours. I'm not sure that that is necessary but it made me feel better. LOL

Overall I would say I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It is a bit shiny in some spots but that's really user error. The tooth looks like it will be great for holding color. I'll have to leave an update when I do the body blushing and faceup!

    2. Thanks for this! I bought some myself recently and am glad that it works well. :3nodding:

    3. I have been using this sealant for a few years now. I’ve found it to be tougher and more toothy than Testors, without the faint amber hue/discolouration and a great value for the price since it comes in a fairly large can. It is a bit satiny by comparison. But I love the stuff. Went into my local tabletop game shop looking for another can, but they only had the satin and couldn’t order in the matte for some reason. It’s time for a refill!

    4. As a previous LGS supervisor in charge of the Army Painter stock, there's a huge issue with the AP supply right now. It was pretty bad even before the rona, but that certainly didn't help! A way we got around it was to spray the satin to seal, then a thin layer of the brush-on matte to paint on!
