Argonautica Dolls Discussion

Does anyone have an Idmon and/or a Laertes they can share? Hopefully I can order either of them next year (or both...I can dream, right?) but I'm still sighing wistfully at pictures. They match 2 characters of mine very well.

Okay, well, I'm not much of a photographer (but he's very pretty so it makes it easier!) He's still awaiting a faceup and needs a wig, since the one I bought him was too big, but here's a couple photos of two of my favorite things about my Idmon, Kartik:

I love his nose so much. It's such a good shape.

He does a great slouchy lounging pose. He falls into nearly this pose whenever I set him down without intent for a specific pose.

 

OH wow, he has and epic nose, Love it! Such character, wow!!!

 

@Sozael Yessssssssssssss. Thank you so much!! I really love his nose too! It gives his face such, I don't know, presence? It's just amazing (and the part that really makes him look like a character of mine!) He really does have a nice relaxed pose. What skin tone do you have him in?

 

So my Nelei arrived less than a week ago and I must say... I am not really satisfied with the quality. I will post a proper review but I am just surprised that out of all threads I read and videos I watched it wasn’t mentioned even once. Of course I’ll see what I can do but I am just a bit let down. I just expected more for what I paid.

 

What happened?

 

So I ordered a Nelei 1/4 in tan:

The resin quality is subpar, which has never happened when I’ve ordered from small artists. The body has some small irregularities, like the knees and the fact that she slouches sideways but I guess that last one was visible on their videos and such. The inside of the head plate looks frankly messy. The tan colour I ordered is very orange, but there is a reason why people cast dolls in orange. Still, should’ve just ordered almond and gone for a proper body blushing instead.

For the $450 price tag (because of the tan colour) I just expected more. My cheapest doll is from Supia (light tan) and better quality overall. I guess Supia is a popular brand that probably can afford selling dolls cheaper and I am just picky. But my dolls from other independent artist such as Legranddoll and Youpladolls are infinitely better quality than Argodoll. (Both darker colours).

Maybe my expectations were just too high.

Of course I’ll work on her and see what I can do. It is after all a beautiful doll, despite everything.

Edit: oh, and the first thing I reacted to was the enormous seamlines. We’ll find out if Argodoll’s tan dolls can be sanded or nah soon enough but looord those are some big *ss seams.

 

@Thymeseer He's in custom color G from. The blog post about custom colors. He's a little bit lighter than I expected him to be, but is a nice color anyways!

@Antika I'm sorry you've had a bad experience! I can't speak for the standard tan, but my Idmon has lighter spots from sanding down seams (at least, that's what it looks like on a couple areas on him, it was done before I got him so I'm not 100% certain) I'm happy to take a picture to show you, if you'd like?

Oh gosh, so sorry! I only have a head, so this is good info to have out there. Super big seamlines means they didn't take care in making their molds.

 

I guess that's an advantage my two alien elementals will have... Their transparent resin is the same color all the way through, so even absolutely ridiculous seam lines can be taken care of.

It's definitely not a Good Thing to have to deal with on a tan-colored doll, though. Yikes.

 

@Antika here's a shot of the most obvious areas of lighter color (on the backs of his thighs) he's got the something similar on his calves, but I couldn't get a photo that captured it very well.


For what it's worth, @Brightfires, I don't think the seams on my Idmon are too bad. But I know that it's the sort of thing that tolerance for varies from person to person, so maybe they just don't bother me as much as they do other folks.

 

Oh no, that’s a lot. I am not about to sand an entire doll whose face is as big as my thumb. She’ll end up looking like a minion.

I am tired of having this problem with tan dolls.

 

Ugh, @Antika, that's pretty typical

FYI, Impldoll does tan, and they must polish them or use some other kind of resin, because they remove seam lines, and there is nothing to see. Their dolls are big, really big though, and may not be your style. But I often wonder, how can they do it? It feels like resin, even smells like resin, so why can they achieve sanded bodies??

 

That’s interesting! I actually am waiting for an impldoll Sicily in brown so we’ll see about that!

 

I hope the brown is still the deep rich tone it was when I got my Aurora as I ordered a brown Leona head to share it. They completely ruined their real skin, lightening it completely up to be lighter than many normal skin tones But that's OT

I've had trouble with my Ifit, who is currently on a Supiadoll ballerina body. I just want broader shoulders for her. I originally put her on an April Story body, and couldn't figure out what was wrong, but I think it was the shoulders. Now I'm thinking of getting another body for her again. Anyone have an Ifit on the Argonautica body?

 

Sorry for the lateness, but here's some pictures of my Medea! The brown resin is still pretty much the exact same as my Zet head from 2019, so I don't think you have to worry about the color being different @IngieBee.

I absolutely adore my Medea and she (or he I guess since it's gonna be a male character, haha) is so much lovelier and cuter in person than I had expected. I was worried the head might be disproportionately small compared to my other SDs but it's actually not too bad. Also, the website lists the eye size as 8-10mm but I don't think that's true, 14mm eyes seem to fit the best (which again, is a relief for me).

 

Got my chocolate Medea! SHE IS GORGEOUS AND THICC AND EVERYTHING EVER MY GOODNESS. Her resin tone is STUNNING. 10/10 for resin quality.

Hi!

It's a bit of a longshot, but I totally fell in love with the plus-size body and hope it will be re-released someday (or hound one second hand), so I can hybrid a Maskcatdoll head with it (a Maskcat Frances: Frances (maskcatdoll.com)).

If one of you has a Maskcat head and that gorgeous plus-size 1/3 body, would you pop it on and send me a picture, so I can see if it would make a good hybrid proportion-wise?

I emailed them a few months ago and they said that the plus size body would be released again this summer.

 

@superXasian : Thank you for that info! That's super good news...just got to make up my mind about that hybrid now, but it should work proportions-wise, since both dolls on their original body are 57 cm in height, with a neck size of 9 cm, even though the Maskcat head is bigger than the Argodoll's head. (because it was originally on a body with less width).

Of course, a picture spells a thousand words, so if one of you has a picture, I would love to see it. I want to see aaaaaaaaaall of those gorgeous curves!

 

Hiya! It's me again, and always for the hybrid! Thanks to @Teruchan I think the hybrid I want could work (with a bit of modding) proportions-wise so now I have a few questions about the resin colors.

Namely, their normal pink.

Does anyone can describe how it looks in real life? Is it a very light pink, dark pink? I know I could brush the neck and hands if there is a slight difference between Argodoll's normal pink and Maskcat NS (cf. my avatar for an example of their NS^^).

If anyone has pictures of their Argodoll's normal pink in different lighting, I would love to see it^^

 

Hello, @lyaam12 - it’s me again!

As it happens, I once owned a 1/6 Argodoll sculpt in Normal Pink and even though I sold the full doll I kept an extra head for color comparison.

I don't have any Maskcat pieces yet, but here are some photos of Argodoll NP (from 2016-2017), along with Bimong Classic Normal (2017-2018 old version, the new version is a darker shade of the same tone), a Resinsoul 1/4 Female jointed hand (“Normal,” from somewhere around 2018), a Doll Legend 1/4 jointed hand (“White” from 2017-2018), an Iplehouse hand (“White” 2017), and a Dollshe Fresh hand (the old version, before it became pinker, 2018).

EDITED TO CORRECT: the Doll Legend hands are not white skin, but are Normal Pink skin. Sorry about the incorrect labeling!

They are all VERY close in person. The Argodoll NP is a tiny bit more “muted” in color than the Bimong Normal, which feels a bit “brighter,” if that makes sense, but they basically match really well even without blushing.

Also, for your reference: here is someone on Instagram who has Maskcatdoll and Argodoll bodies hybrided with Bimong heads. When I asked they said that the match was very close between all three.

@lyaam12 - You're so welcome! I'm so glad to be able to re-pay all the help you gave me on the Maskcat colors!

Hopefully the Argodoll colors are pretty consistent so that you won't need any blushing. If the match is as accurate as it looks online (and comparing the photos online to my examples of Bimong Normal and Argodoll NP) it would only be a slight difference in color.

I was very happy to see those comparisons as well, because it makes me feel better about choosing Maskcat NS.

I am fine with a fairly close match. Even if it comes from the same company, unless it's the same batch (and even then) there may be a small difference in color. But that's fine. I am not exactly "even-colored" myself. XD

Hello, all! I have to note a correction on the reference photos I posted. The Doll Legend jointed hands are NOT white skin but are in fact Normal Pink Skin. I don't know what happened on the Alice's Collections website, but I couldn't find my order info when I took the photos, but it is there now! Anyway, I didn't want to mislead anyone.

@Antika She's lovely, congrats. I'm sorry to hear about posing issues; the 1/3 plus body I have poses well, particularly in the arms. Something must be different between the sizes?

I unfortunately missed my first shot at a dark resin Medea, but am happy to hear there will be another opportunity. Love this artist and was sad there didn't seem to be any company news since late last year.

Summer came to an end and no sign of the preorder for the plus-size body. T_T I hope it will happen soon, as I want to cross of that item of my list (and before straying and being tempted by other stuff, mainly XD).

1) does anyone know of heads which work well as hybrids with the 1/3 non-plus size female body? (bonus if you can direct me to existing pictures)
2) What is the actual shoulder width on that body? (the website has the entire wrap around size which I suppose I could math, but still, you know how doll website measurements can be)
3) What's the general current actual wait time on those bodies?
4) Edit - ignore #3 I just bought one second hand BWAHAHAHAHAHA

In case anyone is interested, there is a preorder until December 12th, for all dolls, but with color options limited it seems.

 

@lyaam12 - I saw that! I'm veery tempted to buy a 1/3 Ifit head to hybrid with my Maskcatdoll body when it comes. She was the first bjd (other than Enchanted Doll dolls) that I really fell in love with. At one point I owned a 1/6 version, but it was a little small for comfortable crafting so I sold her.

I know the colors would work, and the Maskcat heads are somewhat large and youthful (which I like) for the bodies so I think the proportions would match well. I have seen photos of the MC body hybrided with Narae 60 heads, which are similar in size to the Argodoll heads if the measurements are correct.

I have until December 12 to make up my mind!

Edited to add: I still hope to have a collection of MC heads as well, but I'm the kind of person who likes the idea of one body sharing a lot of heads.

 

I actually did catch this on IG for once! Happy but also disappointed; I really want Medea, but will only settle for one in a darker skin tone. Well, if things are improving on the supply end then I can be satisfied with that! I'll have my dark-skinned Medea one day...

 

I'm set on a Zet head, but I've seen some pics suggesting he's going to be shorter than I expect, and that his head is smaller than I think it is. Could I ask for pics of anyone's boys with other dolls to try to get a feel for their size?

 

Hi there so I just got a Argodoll body second hand recently and its pretty fabulous 1/3 but it seems pretty yellow. Those that have purchased a older doll vs newer doll how is the resin colors have they changed. The previous owner said it was normal pink. Can anyone do a comparison of normal yellow and normal pink. Also curious I have a Impldoll head I'd like to put on a body but the head I have is much lighter and more pink than the body I bought. So this is why I'm asking about the most current normal pink and if it is on the yellow side. I see cream as a color as well is that more towards yellow or pink? It would be lovely to see a comparison if possible of normal yellow, normal pink and cream. The head has a faceup already so I can't really color match with blushing. Thanks in advance.

I changed the feet to my spare pair of Maskcat feet because the Argodoll feet don't fit any shoes I have with no problem.

The Maskcat resin is a bit yellower, and the neck situation isn't ideal but it's still a good hybrid I think. A bit of modding and blushing, and it would be perfect.


EDIT: I sanded down the back of the Maskcat's neck, that little lip they have.

The Maskcat neckhole is still way too small, but it goes down on the neck better and looks less awkward from the side. It's still not perfect, I think to truly be good, it would be better to enlarge the neckhole, but you know...I am lazy. XD (That and I think it's truly good enough, I don't want to sand down too much because it would be hard to reconstruct) Alternatively, I could thin the neck, but I really don't want to mod that body, because it was expensive. XD

 

UPDATE! I saw there is a new preorder available until January 12th for all dolls in all sizes and resin tones! Bad timing with the holiday for me, but I will do what I can to finally get that Medea I've been pining after!

 

I got a message from them a few days ago! I've been wanting to get one but not sure what color.
Does anyone know if impldoll normal pink and argodoll normal match? I have a older argo body that seems a bit yellow so I'm not certain how the normal pink Argodoll would match. I currently have a impdoll head on the argo body I have but like I noted above its more on the yellow side or maybe the body I have is normal yellow..lol..no clue I got it second hand and they just said normal skin tone.
Link is to my instagram when I first got her I tried on a few different heads on the argo doll body. The 4th photo is the impldoll head (with horns). The match doesn't look that drastic in person but gives ya an idea. Maybe I should get white and blush it?

 

man, I'm having trouble deciding between Kios vs Prias, and dark green vs deep green... maybe the answer is to get one of each in the 1/6 versions

 

@Kitty Blue : Hi! There is some color comparison on page 17, unfortunately not with Impldoll, but if you can find some color comparison from Impldoll with one of those companies, it would be possible to see if it's close, I think. My normal pink Argodoll body is very pink, IMO. Quite pinker than my Maskcat head, as you can see from the above pictures. I think there is a color comparison on the Argodoll website.

 

I can imagine they are both fabulous..i wish they were 1/4 though lol

 

for once I actually agree 1/4 isn't usually my go to size, but 1/3 Kios/Prias might be a bit big to hang out with my siren, and all the lovely sculpted details might not be quite as visible in 1/6, especially in darker resins like the greens

 

on the website it doesn't look like green is listed for the 1/6 but maybe they do it by request?? Yea I'm more of a 1/4 scale kind girl...lol..resin 1/3 dolls are just too much (says the girl who has a Dollmore Trinity) but I do still have like 4 resin dolls in 1/3...not counting the vinyls (smartdoll/dollfie dream/ect) I have too many of those..lol

 

Yeah, I emailed a request over this morning, and am just waiting on a response. Hopefully it's not an issue, or I guess it's coin toss time
