Are you writing a novel about your doll?

Apr 7, 2018

    1. I'm wondering how many people are doing this because it seems like a lot of people enjoy creating characters and backstories for their dolls.

    2. I have a novel I’m working on for my charecters, some of which I’ve shelled into dolls. For me it’s more like getting dolls for my story charecters though, not writing stories for my dolls.

    3. No novel, but I use my dolls for photo stories. Pretty much all improv though so backstories aren't developed in advance.

    4. I have "worlds" written out for my dolls. I have four so far as their broken up into size categories. Now whether I intend to publish them is the real question xD Publishing is no joke and takes a lot if work. So for now it's just for fun ;)

    5. I am writing a novel/working on a comic that involves my dolls - but that's more because the dolls are meant to represent the characters from the story already in-progress.

I think it'd be fun to do it the other way around someday though.

    6. I write stories and sometimes bring the characters to “life” in dolls, but even if I weren’t a part of the hobby, I would still write and my stories and characters would exist regardless. But, it’s different for everyone. ^^

    7. I'm writing a couple of novels but not about my dolls. However I am trying to work out their character and add them into new story ideas I get because I would love to write a novel involving them, as it's one of the things that attracted me to the hobby and I admire people that already do :)

    8. I'm another person who wanted the dolls because I wanted them to represent the characters... So for me, the novels came first. I have six complete (unpublished) novels in an epic fantasy series for them, though. The main arc is done, so now one of the minor characters will be getting his 3-book side story.

    9. I write stories outside of the hobby, but the story I’m thinking of for my doll is being tailor made for my doll. However I hope I can make it be a full novel. I’ve been in a bit of a creative funk lately, so hopefully writing the backstory for my doll can kickstart my creative muses. I haven’t gotten far with “shelling” existing characters I’ve invented because it’s so hard to find sculpts that fit the image I have in my head.

    10. I wrote stories long before getting into the hobby, I've now started a few stories based on dolls I want and already have. As well as reworked preexisting stories to fit my dolls. Hopefully I can publish them as both novels and online webcomic if bot graphic novels. (Photo stories)

    11. I do have something of novel proportions for my dolls but no intention of publishing. It's just writing exercise.

Sometimes my poor followers get treated to excerpts when I post pics

    12. Nah.

I do write silly little stories about their adventures but nothing novel worthy. It's just like an extension of the hobby for me.

    13. I am slowly writing the story for my first doll. It definitely wont be novel length, but it will be fun and will pass the time till I finally get her.

    14. I'm trying to write a story for my first doll. It keeps changing around and it is kind of hard for me to create more characters until I get more dolls I plan to buy more soon!

    15. I choose my dolls to represent my novel's characters, so I had the story written before getting the dolls (well, at least a part of the story). I love to "shell" my characters and to recreate all their physical details in doll form, it's one of the funniest parts of the hobby for me.

    16. I do a bit of both short stories and a novel. On my own, I'm writing a novel for them, but my friend in the hobby and I like to write short stories using both her dolls and mine.

    17. As a few other people in the thread have said, I tend to create characters first and then shell them into dolls! I have many, many characters, but I only have a few dolls, so "shelling" a character as a doll is usually a sign that I'm really committed to them and their story. It's so nice making one of your characters come to life!

    18. I started writing because of my dolls! Who knows if it will ever become something publish worthy though.

    19. Not my doll per se, but rather the character she embodies. I struggled with her for a while because I couldn't pin down the character, and couldn't get a doll to work for her (I went through 5 sculpts before settling on the 6th one D: ) But the moment I saw the sculpt she ended up being, I got her character to work as well, and three weeks ago I finished the first draft of the novel where she's the main character, a year and three months after I brought her home :D

    20. I am the same way!

... It's one of my secret goals to have a cabinet where physical copies of my books are on display with the finished dolls themselves.

    22. Before I got a bjd, I have been writing a few comics. I use the dolls as shells for my characters.

    23. Not a novel but I working in a comic...the fun fact is I don't have any doll yet hahahaha but the plot of the comic is about a mother searching to reach "her missing daughter", represented in a fantastic way

    24. Not a novel but several of mine have starred in short stories and I'm getting a short story completely about one of them ready to submit for an anthology. :)
I keep the details secret about writing stuff though.

    25. So,i know that lots of folks on here like to write stories about their BJDs-i like to do that, too!but is anyone like, really serious?i mean, writing a book that you want to publish?maybe even a series?me and my sisters dream to do that, and we have a youtube channel called Fairy Circle ink (also,we have another one called therandompuddleshow, but it's not so much about writing, though it is still awesome),and we're writing middle grade book series, and i dunno,i was just curious to know if there's anyone else kinda doing the same stuff^^

    26. I have a lot of stuff in my head that I will some day write down but even then it might just be for me. Who knows though! sometimes I fantasize about quitting to become a novelist.

    27. I’m trying to write an actual story for my dolls. My idea for the doll characters kind of developed alongside the idea for the story, inspiring each other. I’m in the research phase of the story-writing process.

    29. For me it's the other way around; I want to create my story characters into BJD form. I haven't done a serious amount of writing for my stories, a bit of character development here and bits of story there. But I'm hopeful that I'll finally be able to buckle down at some point this year (difficult with a new baby) and get a first draft completed.

Hmm I wonder if creating a character in doll form would spark some inspiration. I might have to give that a go!

    31. As with Spuggey, my stories came first. I've been making a few dolls after characters, and sometimes a doll will sit with me while I write. I've had short stories published, but no novels yet. I've finished one novel, but learned so much writing the second that I'm going to have to revisit the first (though it's been through countless rewrites) to make sure all my plot points and pinch points are definitely in order. I'm currently working on a third (and building a doll of the main character) but i need to do rewrites on the second, because it's only a first draft.
