Wearables Are there maids after the apocalypse?

Jul 17, 2023

    1. Its a question we all ask ourselves one time or another I am sure. Instead of waiting for our inevitable doom I'm setting out to make my own post apocalyptic maid to settle the debate once and for all.

Step 1: Watch many post apocalyptic movies while altering an already made outfit that was kind of ill fitting to fit slightly better. (I forgot to get a before picture here and truthfully the edits are quite rough, but we aren't going for clean here.)

Step 2: Find some old socks and make the base for arm guards and a sort of bandolier-ish thing. (Add buttons and fabric for pizzazz)

Step 3: Cut out tin 'armor' from a beverage can. Punch 2mm holes willy-nilly because you aren't really sure what you are doing. Find out you can't just hit grommets closed with a hammer and tiny anvil. Grumpily order proper tool.

Step 4: Take a picture of your poor boy who you are sending into the wastelands. Plan to start distressing fabric while you wait for package....

Updates coming soon. Maybe pray for me?

    2. If he takes your hammer with him, he'll be ready for anything! Those armor pieces are looking nice, I can't wait to see his new-world-order uniform with the grommets all ready to go!

    3. Loving the concept, reminds me of the Figma little armory series. It's the combo of cute dresses/uniforms and military gear lol

    4. Knowing the rich, they will deny the carnage outside and insist on dinner at 6PM.

    5. Hear me out...serving tray shield. Its going on the list!

    6. Im loving this concept. Gonna upcycle old stuff you find around for the updates? (Obviously after being washed) must make do, lest the madam think us indolent, lol

    7. Housework AND guard duty? Must be a maid of all work /tease

    8. Updates? In my home? Its more likely than you think!

Welcome back to the wastelands! A bit of progress has been made on my end. Cloth distressing has begun thanks to the lovely tutorials from @NuclearSnailStudios on Youtube. Several discoveries were made. Mostly that stretchy fabric is really resistant to ripping and that cotton fabric rips stupidly easily if you aren't careful.

I was using a wire brush meant to rough up the leather on dance shoes but it just isn't cutting it for the stretchy black dress. Next option is literally taking a hammer to it so we shall see how that goes.

In other news the 'armor' has been grommet filled as well as sewn into place! Its a bit too shiny at the moment but I'm happy with the general structure. I have to do the arm bands next which might be a little tricky given how little space I have to work with as well as the need to keep their ability to fit over our boy's hands. I'd like to keep them in one piece but logistics might get the best of me here. We shall see.

There is a lot of black and white going on, but I also hope to build up a bit more color to break it up overtime. I was going to use a less obvious way of marking where to sew the metal sections on but ultimately decided I liked the bit of blue and figured function and speed probably takes precedence in this world anyway. Hope you enjoy the progress and keep any and all fingers crossed for a successful hammer-time distress on the dress.

    9. This is a cool project!

    10. Itty bitty updoot!

      One arm brace has been done! This was reworked far more times than I care to say for something that should be so simple. Does a resin doll need arm padding? Probably not. Did I attempt to make some anyway?...yes >.>;

Debating trimming off the excess belt bits. No idea yet. Stay tuned

    11. I think the excess at the edges really adds to the "cobbled together from whatever was still usable in this postapocalyptic hellscape" feel. It's really looking great! And hey, he can take off the pieces and have plenty of dishes to put on that serving tray shield
