hello! I'm (digitally) sculpting my first BJD right now, but by the time she's ready to be cast, I'll be living in the US. The US post is unreliable (ie, I'm not sure exactly the risks I'd take to ship or the fees I'd incur) right now, as are international customs fees (tariffs are still an issue, though IDK what the technicalities are or how it'd impact someone importing casts) from items coming (from China in particular). So, I was wondering if there's a US-based casting service that anyone knows of. Karlyl's is no longer operating.
I don't happen to know about any US-based casting companies. However, I don't really understand the rest of the statement above. Why do you think US post is unreliable? Also, I've never paid customs fees on anything, and I order a variety of doll and craft-related things from Asia regularly. There were certainly customs delays in spring 2020 due to the pandemic, but that wasn't restricted to the US.
Anything between $800 and $1800 USD for PERSONAL USE is subject to a 4% customs fee there (as of Feb 2021 this .gov article I quote was written), and there's specific business taxes as well, particularly from Asia right now due to unresolved business laws. Anyway, even if you cast 10 MSD-sized dolls from the cheapest company, it's gonna be at or around $1000. That is an optimistic cost, too. And it's not for personal use, so it's actually going to cost more. Also, I've lived in the US, and I've lived in Switzerland. In Switzerland, I've bought from the US, and sent things from Switzerland to my family over there. There have been catastrophic mail-failings in both scenarios, and while a few are the fault of the Swiss post, a few were the fault of the US post, and I'm not gonna mess around with a thousand dollar international order.
So I don't know if this is of interest to you, but Robert Tonner (yes, THAT Robert Tonner) has invested in a company called Shapeways that does polyurethane casting. There's also a company called Aark that does small batch polyurethane resin casting. Neither of these companies show BJDs in their promotional images, but - can't hurt to ask, right? And Aark has LOTS of colors. Personally, I might look at a US caster, if only because of increased international shipping costs.
The Tonner company's Wilde Imagination line includes resin BJDs, so a casting company that they work with would likely be wiling to cast BJDs.
Wilde Imagination is defunct now so unfortunately I can't get on their site to find specific production info, and I *think* I remember that their dolls were produced in China, but I'll reach out to Tonner and ask! It would be so cool to get my dolls cast by the same people who cast Evangeline Ghastly! Thanks for the suggestion! I had no clue Shapeways did casting! That is a great suggestion, thank you! Definitely of interest I'll look into Aark as well- hopefully they'll pan out as color variety is always great. Thank you both so much for these responses! I really appreciate it!
