Faceups Applied lower lashes? Real vs painted eyelashes on lower lids

Jul 10, 2017

    1. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I was wondering why most of the people are painting lower lash line and very rarely using real eyelashes. Painted look a little bit flat on bigger dolls from some angles, so I decided to experiment with lash extensions. Now I know it's just not easy to do glue them aesthetically. :sweat
This was my first attempt, so the next time I'll try to do them more evenly. I think they are a little bit too straight and I wonder how to curl them (with eyelash curler maybe...)

What do you think? Any opinions and critique are welcome. :blush

    2. I actually think that turned out looking great! The applied lower lashes gives a bit more depth and realism, at least in my opinion. Plus my hand is not steady enough to paint lashes by hand, not do I have a light enough touch to not glob the paint, so if I want them on my dolls, I would have to apply them.

    3. Wow that looks GREAT! I never thought of this! You should do a tutorial on how you did it! :o I'd love to see!

    4. I think those look really nice! I personally have more trouble attaching lashes than I do drawing them, so I'll probably stick to my painted-on ones. But your photos give me something to think about, for sure. Maybe I'll try that in the future.

    5. Thanks guys! No problem with making a tutorial, but after another few attempts, I have to find the easiest technique to do this. ^^

    6. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
      THIS IS SO AMASING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You did such an amasing job!
      :love:love:love:love:love:love:love:love

People paint lower lashes becouse they can not find good sized ones and glue them. Actually, I do not think I have ever seen a job done as good as You have done.
What lower lashes did You use? Have You done anything special with those lower lashes?

    7. Swampruler, thanks! ^^ I guess they are called "individual eyelash extensions" or something like this, they are sold on a tray in different sizes, colors, like this:

Tricky thing is, they are not glued to a strip. You have to apply them using very precise tweezers, just a couple of them at one time.

    8. If I'm honest, I don't like painted lower lashes. I prefer doing a strong eyeliner on the lower lash line and pretending they've simply scarce lashes there. But, your attempt has really inspired me to try this someday since it looks natural/realistic and I prefer it to painted ones overall. Good job!

    9. Wow, that looks nice! And now I have a use for those loose lashes I have.

    10. Ooh wow, that looks really effective!
I always paint mine on, but I find it very tricky to get them right so they never look that brilliant. (It's always my least favourite part of painting faceups). If I could find suitable real eyelashes I'd definitely try applying them instead, especially after seeing this!

    11. I love dolls with applied lower lashes. I have a couple and am slowly doing more of them. ^__^
These look great by the way!

    12. This looks great! I might try this when I redo one of mine's faceups soon.

    13. Oooh! Those look amazing! I love lower applied lashes myself, but it is hard for me to find the right lashes,
so only one of my dolls have them on. He was the first doll I got blank and he needed stylized lower lashes (with the outer
corners being longer than the rest), so I felt like I had no choice but to apply lower lashes for him. However, for me it's hard
finding the right lashes, I used to get human hair lashes glued on a clear strip but I can't find them anymore. They didn't look
half as good as yours, but they had a clear bonding strip so I felt that they worked decent enough for years; in fact, my Mano
is still wearing the same pair for the past ten-years since I got him, because I can't find new ones! DX[

I tried adding individually trimmed eyelashes hairs on him in the past, but that resulted in me blowing all of the tiny hair away
with my breathing! Lol! I think you did a lovely job though, they look very natural, congratulations and thanks for sharing your work! (:

    14. I know that situation. :sweat Luckily, the ones I'm using right now are lightly glued to the tray, so it's easy to pick them up at the right angle with the tweezers. I bought them in a beauty supply store for cosmetologists, it's also easy to find them on eBay or AliExpress for about $4.

    15. I had seen some like that at Walmart once long ago, but I thought they were too long (my Mano has tiny eyes, and are not squinty-er because I modified
him a few years ago to have even smaller eyes!). But sadly all the mass sellers around me have stopped selling lashes for some reason, so I might have to try eBay
(not sure I trust AliExpress with my credit card). Thanks for the suggestions, I definitely love the wispy ends that non-trimmed lashes have, but my Mano's eyes are so
small I might be stuck with the crappy ones he has had until now. That won't stop me from trying though, thanks again for posting your method, it's truly beautiful to look at!

    16. Either can be nice but some painted lower lashes while looking beautiful close-to, tend to look like a shadow under the eyes from a distance and tend to (to me at leat) make it look like the doll hasn't slept well.

    17. @Enzyme, the shortest ones I found are 4mm. I still trim them inside the head after the glue dries. Good luck! :thumbup

    18. Thank you so much for that bit of info Szklanooka, I think I could do something with 4mm, although that might still be a bit long for his tiny eyes. Thanks again! (:

    19. 40% of people chose "no", but no one said why. Come on guys, I wanna hear your comments on this! :abambi: "No", because of difficulty in applying or because of aesthetic reasons?

    20. I've honestly never thought of applying lower lashes. I've only ever seen them painted on, but I love the way they look. So much more natural, in my opinion. I also don't think I have a steady enough hand to properly paint/draw them on.

    21. I've only seen it done a few times, but I love real lower lashes! I would love to have a doll with them. I can't even manage applying upper eyelashes though so I don't even want to try myself.

    22. I honestly prefer real lower lashes than painted ones, but I understand that it gets difficult to find lashes that are around the right length (which is my problem). :/
Also the smaller the doll gets the more I feel that painting them on just becomes more practical.

    23. Ah so beautiful! What a good idea! It gives a realistic look, and I love what it looks like to see eyelashes in portrait. Well done!

    24. I would have said "no," thinking they'd look too stick-like, until I saw yours. Wow! Now I want all my dolls to have real lower lashes!

    25. Wow, this looks very cool! I also think that realistic eyelashes look much better than painted, but this is a more difficult method. What kind of glue did you use in your work? It should be very tenacious.

    26. I voted no, both because of aesthetics and difficulty. I'm not trying to make my dolls hyper realistic, for me they are a hybrid between sculpting (which I suck at) and drawing (which I am good at) so I like the painted look. I also like eyelashes to be stylized and painted in a pattern, that theoretically could be replicated with real eyelashes but it would be SO much effort, for not much of an improvement in my opinion! Plus, a bunch of glue along the waterline is not appealing to me D:

There's also the fact of like... where do you stop? If you have upper lashes and lower lashes that are real and three dimensional, suddenly the eyebrows are looking pretty flat. Has anybody ever glued on eyebrow hairs? XD I've seen glued on beards and I don't like them at all. Basically I prefer all elements of a faceup to be painted with the exception of upper eyelashes, gems, and certain kinds of scars.

    27. I've been meaning to try attached lower lashes for a while, I've just never gotten around to doing it. This is really helpful, I'll definitely be trying these out soon!

    28. I was thinking about doing that actually, adding hair to eyebrows; I've seen fake brows for humans, but they tend to look a bit... funky? It's like a lace front wig but all bushy! I was thinking maybe
adding one hair at a time. It's hard to do with individual hairs though, because breathing gets in the way, so I didn't go any further than just contemplating "how would it look." I suck at painting small things, so It would be a good option for
me if I could get it to work for at least one of my dolls.

I am on the opposite end of you in some aspects however, I prefer some of my dolls to look as realistic as possible; at least the ones that are realistic-ish, I want them to look as close to real as possible. I keep my glue on
the clear strip of the lash, so it's a pain in the gut finding lashes that are like that anymore but I do get what you mean -- that's why I've only done it on one of my dolls, it's a pain to get it to look good on dolls with tiny eyes and w/out
the messy glue (although the clear strip does help hide it somewhat, it is still not perfect, but I like the 3D effect as opposed to the flat painted on lashes). (:

    29. I've been wondering the same thing! I don't have a doll yet, but I really wanted to try real lower lashes. I've only seen one other doll with lower lashes from a Google search.

    30. Yes I have seen some dolls w/real hair for beards/brows etc. There's a Viking on DOA like that - superb! Also I do believe the hipster w/the manbun - grey haired - has real hair on his face. I've not seen a female doll w/real brows tho

    31. I couldn't vote! I want to say yes because I have thought of trying it but I haven't yet. I may try for my next faceup! You certainly showed amazing results so I want to try more than before! In terms of application I am completely up for the challenge. My only concern would be durability because I love carrying my dolls around meaning putting them in bags or suitcases without worrying about their faceups too much. Of course I am careful to leave the face area clear of anything that might rub against it... and I could use a face protector if I had a fragile faceup... I guess I would have to try to know for sure how I feel about it. So my vote is "I will give it a try!".

    32. I always like real lashes, but sticking them is sooooooo hard......../u\

    33. I think using applied lashes instead of painted ones looks great but it needs the right materials and technique to pull it off well, and some people may struggle with that. Plus it may not be right for the individual's style.

    34. That looks awesome!

I was literally thinking about this just the other day. Not entirely sure it'd go so well on an MSD size and I'm not going for hyper realism with my dolls so probably won't attempt it myself unless I decide to go bigger.

      Great work though, impressive result.

    35. Okay here's my reason for 'no'. I find applied lower lashes look too over the top with natural faceups much of the time. They also make eye positioning more fidly.

    36. Your results look absolutely amazing! You did a truly stunning job.

I hadn't put much thought into applying lower eyelashes over painting them, but now I'm definitely interested. I'm not so sure I would apply them to my MSD, but I'm sure with an SD this would be the route to try.

    37. What a GREAT idea! ! I think is totally ok! I think many says 'no' because they need to see much more photos... there's a gallery for that? Also, could be that lower eyelashes "take off' a bit of 'painting fashion' of the doll.. (since their origin, face up where painted... so the false lashes down may give a look too much of a 'manikin' maybe? I don't know. If are very tiny I think they are ok! I wish I could try one but I never saw so tiny lower eyelashes ><

    38. I've seen applied lower lashed before and I think they look fantastic. I like both styles for different reasons. I think it depends on the doll. You did an amazing job, one of the best I've seen.

    39. I kept going back & looking at them because of what you said but to me they looked great & seems everyone else thinks the same.
They do look so real...They cut them like you did on the reborn dolls..Great job.

    40. It looks pretty good! I think ppl drawing the eyelash because it's easier? But I'm new to this hobby, I don't think I can make any assumptions.

    41. I voted yes because I would love to try this on one of my dolls! The result is simply stunning and gorgeous!
I love the semi-realism it provides, but also for simple aesthetic reasons. It just looks really good and I'm sure it photographs splendidly.

My only reason for hesitating is that I don't have a clue on how to do it!
Usually I'm pretty good at winging things, but this seems like one of those things one needs a good tutorial for!
(If you are planning a tutorial, I'm on ^-^!)

    42. I was just thinking of applying lower eyelashes and it does look good if you get the right length! I like the realism they bring to the doll, but I think it would look best on females.

    43. I love how you've applied your doll's lower lashes~ I find applied lower lashes look really good, they make the dolls look more human-like in my opinion~~ I've never done this myself though since finding short enough lashes is really difficult :|

    44. wow this application looks more realistic. I love realistic make up ^.^~

    45. It definitely looks really good, but I manhandle my dolls too much for applied eyelashes. I don't even apply upper eyelashes! :sweat

    46. that actually looks so good. i really wanted to do something like that but i dont know how you would even do it lol

    47. wow!down eyelashes is so amazing!!!! It makes the eyes more dramatic!! Just feel like she has some story inside the eyes, absolutely yes!

    48. Okay, I love the eyelash on the lower lid look so I'm trying that with my next faceup. But real quick can I give a shout-out to those eyebrows because holy crap they're lovely!

    49. Beautiful job!

    50. I resently bought a beautiful doll by Delicacy Dolls (Alina Ivanova),and she has lower lashes applied. And I adore it :)

    51. They look amazing
it looks amazing great job ❤️

    52. Hello, my fellow polish friend! :D
I think that it can look really natural if you use lighter colour of eyelashes and if they're shorter like you did, it looks great! In my opinion on SD sized dolls it would look great, but on smaller I'm not so sure.

    53. One of my dolls has applied lower eyelashes, which I love on him because it suits the character's overall aesthetics.

However, they do present a challenge in photos sometime, as the lower lashes will cast shadows onto the rest of the face. I'm not sure where I sit on this...if the lashes are sufficiently short (like your photos), I do like them a lot more than painted eyelashes. I guess it just depends on the length and patience of the artist in applying them.

    54. I also like to stick lower eyelashes, it is natural.
      But very tiring ^^ "
I use a more messy way to paste.

    55. That looks great but hard work I would think & you would have to be very even & precise.:3nodding:

    56. I voted no for aesthetic reasons. I'm not a huge fan of very noticeable lower lashes (painted or applied). I also associate lower lashes with realism and I tend to like the less realistic faceups the most :).

    57. Wow, I never even considered this idea for faceups. I mean, as someone who's not done that many faceups I can confirm I'm not fantastic with doing the lower lashes. I can't seem to get them painted right, but this is such a good idea, and it's so beautifully realistic. I love how they look. I'll probably have to do this for my next faceup and see if I'll want to continue with this method.

    58. I'm planning on doing this with my doll when i get her, she is a smaller doll though so i need to find thinner more wispy lashes or else her eyes will look droopy i think.....

    59. I think most lower lashes in real people are not curly - and that yours represents them well! Great job.! Exquisite!
