Apoxie Sculpt.... Can it come off?

Jun 23, 2005

    1. For a Dreaming El head I'm getting in, I'm wanting to sculpt some vampire ears on him for a character of mine. But I was wondering, after the apoxie sculpt dried onto the ears, would I be able to take it off without harming the resin? I looked at all the customization threads in that one sticky, but couldn't find anything on it...

Also, another thought, if I put vaseline on the ear while molding the pointed one and then letting the sculpt dry, will the vaseline let it not adhere to the resin so I can take it off (and there for be able to switch ears at whim)?

    2. The vaseline might work but an even better thought might be to make an ear mold, mold some ears from it, then make your tip-attachments so that way if the vaseline didn't work you wouldn't have to cry over your doll. Because the only way to remove resin that I know of is sanding or drilling. Resin adheres and was meant to stay. And an upshot of making ear molds and making some ear models would be that you could try several ear types and play around with them. Just a thought. Hope whatever you do you keep us posted.

    3. Oh thanks for your advice! Would it be safe to stick a BJD head into a silicone molding agent? I'm trying to think of how I'd go about just getting just the ears for a mold...

I'll be sure to keep you guys posted!

    4. you may want to look into silicone molding tutorials... I don't know enough about it myself to direct you. But i am sure you have to have some kind of release. You may even try a search on the forums to see what turns up.

    5. This may sound a little strange, but maybe you could wrap the head in plastic wrap to mold on the ears and then let them dry. That's similar to how we used to paper mache our faces in art class (though that was with a plastic bag).

    6. I think starfaerie has a good idea... but you CAN remove apoxie if you really want to, either by sanding (it is softer than the resin) or if you have sculpted onto the smooth surface of the doll (without sanding the area you wanted to sculpt first to create grip for the apoxie) you should be able to get it off by scratching at the edge with your fingernail, sort of like peeling a sticker or a beer-label, and it should come off.

But I reiterate: starfaerie has a good idea, although I don't know how well you'll be able to blend the tip into the ear once you glue it on.

For a more extravagant option; you could buy the head you want (El Dream) plus f. ex Dark Elf Soo, cut off the ears on both of them, and glue the pointy ears on el, and the human ears on Soo. This will require something like a jewelers saw, loads of patience and a steady hand. This would probably be more on the 'permanent' end of the scale, again, though...

    7. Yes! I really like starfaerie's idea! i just have to put the plastic wrap on smoothly so there aren't any folds or anything, and create the different tips ontop of that.

I also thought about the blending deal with glued on tips, and figured I could try to make the line as fine as possible and when I want to use one set of the ears, mix up a paint and try to paint over the line so it isn't as visible.

Now, in one of the Customizing threads that were in the sticky, I heard you talking about how White Apoxie Sculpt is almost identical to the BW CP resin? I wasn't too clear if that was the case, but the head I have coming in is a BW El Dreaming and didn't know if I'd have to do a 'paint mixing' with my apoxie sculpt :) Can you clear this up for me? Thanks!

And thank you Starfaerie for the idea!! I'm going to try that out when he comes in :daisy

    8. When it comes to apoxie colour, all I can say is it will never be perfect. If you don't want to mix, and the doll will be BW, then yes, use white apoxie, but it will have a slight grey hue compared to a white piece of paper and a bright white resin doll. The luminosity/opasity of resin and apoxie are different, and perhaps putting a bit of white paint in with the apoxie will make it whiter, but I cannot say for sure. All I ca say is, buy enough to do some experimenting.

    9. Lets say I did do the paint mixing with the white apoxie and I put it in the white part first before mixing in the additive, do I make it so that the first half of the apoxie matches the resin color? And when I mix in the additive once I'm satisfied with the color, will the additive change it slightly?

 I hope that made sense...

Yes, it will. The grey"b" half of the Apoxie sculpt will affect the final color...it does come out greyer. Twigling suggested mixing the "a" color with white paint (thus adding more white pigment into the mix), I think it will take some trial and error testing.

    11. Ruyichi, you do make sense, its just hard to explain, when at this point I am only musing. It is the additive, the part B which is slightly grey and will affect the colour that you mix into part A. But in the case of "mixing white" it's not going to be easy to overcompensate for the (slight) grey of part B. vicki_j made her BW Soo (special?) into an elf with apoxie: http://groups.msn.com/isapi/fetch.d...!72sNcdO*W4ifJY!LszzDBwoMnnrZ9eKs7KQHpjHjOktC http://groups.msn.com/DYKWsHomeBase/snowcpwhitesoospecial.msnw

    12. Oh I see! Thank you very much! ^__^ Its really not that noticable. And I don't mind the slight grey, I will be doing a grey body blushing anyways :)!! So it will probably be really hard to tell :D

    13. OMG! I *LOVE* her neck tattoo!!! :D :D :D
