Hello, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience using Apoxie Paste as a casting material? I'm unable to use Polyurethane Resin right now, due to the health risks, so I'm looking for an alternative casting material that can be used with silicone moulds. If I cast my doll in this material, it would treated as a 'back-up' prototype, not a final product. From the description here, it sounds like it can be poured and has a 'batter-like' consistency. My moulds tend to be quite small and I've used a syringe in the past to insert resin into small moulds. I'm just wondering if anyone can offer and first-hand advice/tips/experience on this particular material? Thanks EDIT:: OOops! I meant to post this in the Materials section -- sorry!!
the material sounds like it's the consistency of...cookie batter? Air bubbles at the ends of tiny parts might be a problem, unless maybe...you spread the paste like peanut butter on two halves of a mold, and then put them together? A quick google turned up this video:
If you want to use Apoxie as a casting material, you might want to consider making plaster press molds and use regular Apoxie instead. The more clay-like consistency would probably have better results with less chance of air pockets.
Euueew, it doesn't look very pourable from the video! Thanks for finding that, penguu. Miss_Pygmalion, that sounds like a good idea, but I don't think I can take on plaster mould-making right now either :s Still thinking, but it may be that there is someone local who I can hire to do the mouldmaking and casting... fingers crossed.
i cant use resin at the moment either and have started experimenting with apoxie clay then eventually white apoxie sculpt myselfr. I basically used my silicone mold (oomoo 30) as a push mold. From this little experiment it seems like the casts would have been better if the molds were made from something much firmer. I couldn't get a good head cast from it either and the pieces wouldn't come out smooth they had little cracks and imperfections in em. Oh and becasue silicone is squishy sometimes the seams came out horribly like 2 halves of a sculpt reconnected unevenly. When i get my apoxie sculpt in the mail i'm thinking about maybe using the apoxie clay to make new push molds. The above pic is what i got after re smoothing some parts. I wish i saw this thread earlier i would have taken pics of what it looked like in the mold
