Modification Apoxie modification

Apr 15, 2017

    1. On 4/11/2016 I received my first SD size doll SoulDoll Tera-Zenith Scott.
This is what his face looked like out of the box:

[IMG]For DOA by Serdtse, on Flickr

I think the photo above shows the obvious difference between the two sides of his face. His one eye is much larger than the other. I thought it was just the eye at first but then I noticed that it was a problem with the sculpt, one side was protruding while the other was receding. I spent a long time trying to fix the problem with apoxie sculpt. I never did any modifications of any kind and this was my first SD size doll.
This is the result of my final attempt (after what feels like 100 attempts to me)

    2. I am kind of new to all this, but to my untrained eye, his head looks great!!! It now looks even.
I think you can look at the head in a mirror. It will point out uneven ness. Great job!!!

    3. @Kirby2165 Thank you so much for your response. You are very kind and yes I have taken multiple photos of both the right and the flipped image side by side as I was working. I have a lot of photos of my progress, and I was willing to share more, yet I get one response out of 50 views?
I know there are a lot of talented people here who have the knowledge and are able to show support but choose not to for some reason...?
      This makes me discouraged.
Its very sad that so many people had nothing to say

    4. Please don't get discouraged!!! It is a busy weekend. I am sure if you will be a bit more patient there will be more views and lots of thoughts about this modification!!!

    5. @Kirby2165 Your very sweet and I appreciate you responding so quickly.

    6. First of all, I think you did an amazing job. I'm a little baffled that Soul Doll created such an uneven sculpt, unless it was supposed to be a facial expression - but you really evened it out. (Very handsome boy, btw!) Secondly...damn, I admire people who have the guts to grab the Apoxie and go to work. As for me, after spending that much on a doll I'd be more inclined to pout and accept the sculpt for what it is. You're awesome! :D But as for whether you should stop there or keep going and make something else altogether, there's no such thing as an objective answer on this one - except that you should impress us all and keep going if you feel like it - or stop, give him a faceup, and be extremely happy with the sculpt that you originally envisioned.

Edit and PS: This forum is huge, and a lot of posts go unnoticed. It is kind of discouraging to be ignored (believe me, I've been there, lol) - but what you have to seriously ask yourself in the end is whether you're in it for the interaction, or in it because you totally and completely love the dolls and all of the aspects of collecting them. It's a pretty important question, because there are a lot of enjoyable hobbies that are far more affordable! :XD:

    7. Hello Serdtse,
I think you did nicely with the apoxie, his eyes and face appear more even.
I think if you wanted to you could sand the face and lower brows with a high grit sandpaper again to make them appear more smooth. There appears to be a slight raise due to the adding of the apoxie on the face as well.
Because you did this very cleanly and well, if you decide you don't want to sand it again it will still look great and add character to the face.
For the color matching and face up, if you have an airbrush it will be easier to match the skin tone. If you don't have an airbrush, pastels will probably do just as nicely, it will just take longer. What type of faceup would you like to do for them? What is their character like?
Overall I think you did an awesome job on making it even and the new shape of the eyes and slight modifications to the face looks great! If you choose to post more pictures I would love to see them.

As for why more people aren't commenting, I wouldn't worry about it. A lot of people may feel like they have nothing to add or say or maybe they're busy. Some people just don't like commenting, it's nothing to worry about or be discouraged by.
Ps, celga phrased that so much better than I did xD

    8. I think you did a wonderful job with the apoxie, his face looks different now but in a great way and his eyes look so even and lovely. Well done and know that you have done great with your first work of this kind. I love how you've made his eyewells look so even and natural. Can't wait to see what you do with this gorgeous guy once he has a faceup and things.

PS the idea of just trying this scares the whatsits outta me, but kudos to you for going for it! XD

    9. Please don't be discouraged, it's not even been a full day since you posted!
I look at a lot of threads that I'm not qualified to comment on but I am usually curious about people's modding projects so I look with interest. I usually try to give a comment when the mod is fully completed because it's hard for me to judge something at this stage since I have not been looking at this sculpt before at all. I look forward to seeing the faceup most after a mod.
Many people here on the forum don't mod at all so won't say anything on a post like this due to lack of experience. Since many new people have been posting a lot, I'm sure your posts drew some of their views too.

Plus this is a slow forum in general but for the photo galleries and games sections and it is Easter weekend.

    10. This was the blank head photo from the SoulDoll website that I flipped to see the problem areas.

      and this was my photo that I flipped before any modification;

Now this is the modified head photo flipped:

@celga and @KlanceKlanceRevolutn Thank you for your support:aheartbea I was getting emotional about the lack of response because I spent a lot of money on this doll and I took a big risk trying to modify it. I thought I found a way to modify it to be happy with it. I think I will end up making it a demon monster head with extra Apoxie completely changing the sculpt into something entirely different.

    11. Thank you for the additional pictures, they really highlight the unevenness of the original sculpt. Your modifications definitely make it more balanced.
As for the thanks involving the support, I'm really happy I could help! :kitty2
I think a demon monster head would be awesome! I look forward to seeing future updates! Good luck!

    12. What kind of apoxie did you use?

    13. I think you replied to the wrong person :sweat

    14. What kind of epoxy did you use? I might like to try something similar to this in the future.

    15. @Serdtse In that case, I hope you start a project journal! It's really inspiring to watch people's progress as they modify a sculpt into something else altogether. :D

@Kirby2165 Apoxie Sculpt is a great sculpting product, it's not a misspelling of the word 'epoxy'. ;)

    16. Thank you!!!

    17. @Kirby2165 If you have a project that you're looking into, you can find Apoxie in a lot of craft stores, or if none supply it locally, no problem - it's easily available online. And...I hope you share your future modifications with the rest of us! :)

Ahem, truly sorry, not trying to hijack the thread. :sweat I just really, really love mods, because I am such a freakin' coward and have never even once tried one of my own. Serdtse, you're my hero just because of OP!

    18. Ooo, this mod looks great! That is really weird that it was so uneven... I mean, the sculptors who make the dolls are human too and can make mistakes, but that unevenness seems a little extreme! You really fixed it though. And if you do make a demon character out of him, I'd love to see it! That kind of extensive modding is so cool to me, even though I have pretty much zero experience with it myself. Definitely make a project journal if you can/want to. :3nodding: Great job!

    19. I don't know if I am capable of executing such a project, but I would love to see the masks of comedy and tragedy on the sides of a bjd head. I think it would be very cool!!!

    20. @KlanceKlanceRevolutn Thank you again. Your kindness and your advice was a great help<3

@Kirby2165 Aves Apoxie Sculpt comes in a variety of colors too, I just used their white version which turns a light gray when it dries.
I think your idea for a mask is very cool! I hope you give it a try.:D

@celga You flatter me:blush and now your making me blush!:D Really though you should give it a try, It really is a lot of fun when you want to get absorbed in something.

@KiyoshiSenshi Thank you for your support<3
I think this sculpt was a trial for an artist to do a head for a new 75cm body for SoulDoll and that's why he is the only one that looks very different than the others in the same line. I do love the body and I think turning him into a new project journal will be fun:D

    21. Ooh, that makes sense! I'll definitely keep an eye out for this project, it sounds so cool!

    22. I hope that other new people stumbling thru this hobby like I did are very careful when choosing to spend a very large amount of money on a doll they are considering. I hope that bjd companies are able to provide a good blank head photo of the sculpt and people who are interested in the doll are then able to flip the image for themselves. I do love the TZ body and the clothes, they were really well made. They have a lot of talented artists that I can appreciate and hey for what it's worth, this was a tremendous learning experience for me.
Thank you to everyone who showed support.<3

    23. So I was going to blush the TZ body with my airbrush and I just added the head to see what it would look like.
I did some wet sanding to the eye area. What do you guys think? should I just give him a faceup before I do a complete
alteration? Sorry about the messy background.

    24. I think it depends on what you're planning to alter. It helps to think of it as layers; if you're doing an add on that's supposed to be above the face up layer (like horns or removable teeth or something) then you could do the face up first. If you're doing something that's supposed to go below the face up layer (like another facial or head mod) you should do the modifications first.
I'm just going off of research here as I have yet to mod a doll but it seems like doing the modifications first and the face up second would be a better idea because then you could face up and blush everything at the same time. However, it depends on the type of person you are and what you think you should do.
He looks fantastic so far and you're doing a great job! Thanks for the updates and good luck with your plans!
PS, your background isn't messy at all, you should see mine xD

    25. @KlanceKlanceRevolutn :XD: I didn't show my full background, it's much worse than that, But I figured if I'm not making a big mess then I'm not working. ;)
I'm currently in the process of blushing the body and that has to start with a sealer. Just in case any one wants to know, when doing an apoxie mod, it's better to do the color matching first without sealer and then do the sealer and blushing.
I worked on this head for months trying to get it evened out and good looking. I must have added and subtracted apoxie dozens of times.
So I thought I should at least do a face-up before I dive into more apoxie add ons.
If I decide I still don't like it? I could always wipe it off and start all over again.
Thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate them<3

    26. I'm going to quote what you said in future when I mess up my workspace "if I'm not making a big mess then I'm not working"
Good luck on the body blushing and thanks for the color matching tip, how's that going?
I didn't realize that you've spent so long on the apoxie mods, that takes a lot of dedication, props to you! Good luck with the face up and future add ons! Make sure to put up some pictures so we know how it's going :3 as you said, if you don't like it you can always wipe it.
Once again, I wish you the best of luck and I hope everything goes smoothly!

    27. It's really cool that you took on this mod, and you did a great job on it, but I find it distasteful how you trash not only Souldoll's sculptor but them as a company. Different people value different aspects of a sculpt, and symmetry is not high on everyone's list of priorities. I don't think perfect symmetry is required of a "good sculptor"; this head is beautiful and unique even if it is asymmetrical, and obviously there was something you liked about it since you bought him. It's fine to be disappointed, that happens all the time, but it's pretty rude to say that Souldoll is "getting away" with selling a product that there are clear photographs of, as if they've swindled you. :horror:

      • x 2
    28. I think that it's not unreasonable to expect perfection for the amount of money that these dolls cost, and even if symmetry is not high on one person's list of priorities, it may be on someone else's...therefore, the symmetry should be there, shouldn't it? I dunno, I think if I'd spent several hundred dollars on a doll and its face was uneven enough to notice, then I'd probably have been quite upset, too. Hard to judge unless one actually sees it firsthand.

But that's neither here nor there, since this is a thread about modifications - and I'm just really eager to see the finished product! LOL @Serdtse...what's with that piece of black tape?? :XD:

    29. @overlordu Thanks for the compliment! And I hope you read my additional text about how " I think Souldoll has many other talented artists that I can appreciate." Please keep in mind that he was my first SD size doll and I never spent a very large sum of money on one doll before. I did purchase him because I expected him to be as close to the grand quality that I spent on him. I know 800$ is not a lot of money for some people, but it was for a Blank doll for me. I was really hoping he would be every penny worth the price. There are plenty of things I like about him, and Souldoll. I love his body and the thickness and texture of his resin, I also like the way Souldoll gives long layaway and free gift items.

But as @celga mentioned, this is a thread about modifications. And believe me when I say I would have been very happy not to have started this mod if he was perfect (like many other expensive dolls) in the first place.

Color matching done. Next stage, sealer, then blushing, then tattoos, face-up and I probably
won't finish in time before this thread hits the one month mark and gets locked. If I start a project journal, I will try to start where I left off here.

    31. He looks fantastic so far! It's be super cool if you made a project journal, I'd love to see where you go from here. :3nodding: Do you have any ideas for what you want to do with his styling?

    32. Wow, awesome color matching - he looks great! :D I agree with KiyoshiSenshi - if you don't have time to finish him here, a project journal would be fun to follow.

    33. Fantastic job color matching! The skin tone looks very even and smooth, the sculpt and your mods look even better with the color matching done. Good luck with the blushing, tattoos, and face up. I agree with celga and KyoshiSenshi, it would be really interesting and fun to see the rest of your work. If you don't feel like adding your work here I'd love to see a project journal with it. What are some of the styling ideas you have? Once again, I wish you the best of luck with the work remaining and great job on everything you've done thus far!

    35. Wow you did a great job. I have bought a few dolls at a discounted prices after people add apoxie to it and most of the time I just remove it all to get the doll back to its original version. But you have done such a beautiful job.
