Casting Anyone know how to cast this type of doll?

Jul 6, 2005

    1. I've been surfing the web and am totally in love with the pre-made dolls, but I'd also like to try my hand at making one of my own. I think I've got most of it figured out, or will - except the casting part. I'd like to make reusable molds and actually cast my dolls in plastics (or maybe even resin if I get that far. XD), but I don't know how to create the pieces to get a correct mold. Do I have to cut it in half to cast it and then glue it back together? I think that's what they do with the dolls for sale, since I read that they sand seams.
Anyways, I'm not sure how to do it, or if latex would work for a reusable mold, or if wax is too melty to use with certain mold making materials. If anyone does know and could help me out, I'd really, really appreciate it.
      Thank you! =)

    2. From what I've read, most people use silicone molds :)

If you read the "Bishonen House" thread (the one with, like, 20 pages), there are some pictures of Donn's silicone molds :>

      Good luck!

    3. I read the whole Bishonen House post before I registered. It was a good sourse of info, but I'm still not entirely sure how to go about it. I'm thinking I'll have to sculpt the doll and then cut it in half (sounds creepy!). do two seperate molds per body part, and then glue them together.
Do you think if I PMed him he could answer my questions? I don't want to butt in on anyone's trade secrets... *_*

    4. Hey LunaCat (you dont have to cut your model in half at all) :daisy

sorry i didnt see your thread earlier, im actually working on a tutorial at the moment that will show how i made the basic 2 and 3 piece molds for my doll, but for the time being heres a link where you can find some usefull mold making info

      i hope that helps,..

    5. Yay! Thank you so much!!! :chibi

    6. I'm still researching this...

What I have in mind (untill I learn more) is to produce a very rigid mold from aluminium and use an injector.

The advantage is that...the mold will last 'forever'. I could use stronger material. The cast will be exactly the same with no variation.

The disadvantage is... the mold is harder to create (and can be dangerous...liquid aluminium) or costly to create if you get a company to do it (safer).

silicon mold's advantage: easier to work with, cheaper to make, make casting with complex shapes (flexible molds that could be peeled off the positive)

Silicon's disadvantage: fragile mold, variation in the cast if the silicon mold isn't backed by some rigid support.
