I can't be the only one...right? I was if anyone besides myself reads webcomics. If it turns out I'm not alone, want to discuss them with me? All forms of discussion are welcome and appreciated! To start, here are a few questions: Which ones do you read? What are your favorites and why? Any recommendations?
I do follow a couple of webcomics, but nothing too deep story-wise, but still great reading, if pop-culture and video game references are your stuff. AWKWARD ZOMBIE Manly Guys Doing Manly Things » Updated Mondays or whenever I feel like it
I practically live off webcomics. I can't get enough. So here's a bit of a list for you if you're interested! Most of these can be found very easily by googling them, but I'll try and add links for most of them. Finished: Alice Grove, Snarlbear, Shortpacked!, Girls with Slingshots, probably more that I've forgotten about. Ongoing: Questionable Content, Dumbing of Age, Something Positive, Sandra and Woo, Freakshow, Scandinavia and the World, Gamercat, Awkward Zombie, Flaky Pastry, Sandra on the Rocks, Devil's Candy Unknown Hiatus: Two Guys and Guy Plus three NSFW webcomics.
Yess thank you! I briefly looked at the art of both of them and they both look so nice. I love references of those kinds so I'll definitely have to start reading them! Haha another one of my kind! Yes, we shall find and live off all the webcomics Thank you so much for the list, I'll look up the ones you mentioned! Sense you and @LilaAIP mentioned Awkward Zombie I'll probably look at that one first. I've seen Gamercat up on Tapastic (I shall always call it by its old name) I think? I'll Google it. Again thank you so so much for the list and for the way you organized it! Also just as a side note, links to the obscure ones would be appreciated but it's totally fine if you don't feel adding them!
Links have been added for all of the ongoing comics, and two of the finished ones. Questionable Content is easily my biggest go to for recommendations. Awkward Zombie and Gamercat are video game webcomics, and also the only two on my list that can really be read out of order. SATW can be read at random, but there are some comics that reference earlier things. Also, always read the artist comments for SATW. Snarlbear is great if you want to see what happens when you make a webcomic out of an acid trip. Shortpacked! was done by the same person who does Dumbing of Age, but I recommend reading Shortpacked! first since it's finished. Just keep in mind they use a lot of the same characters, but they're completely alternate universes that have no bearing on each other. PS: QC updates Monday through Friday, Dumbing of Age updates every day, SP updates two to three times a week, and the rest are pretty much once a week. Except Sandra on the Rocks. That one is irregular. Sometimes there will be on every day, but then you might go two weeks without an update, or you'll get an update once a week, or basically just whenever. But never two in one day.
Oh wow, I read so many, if you want recommendations it might be easier if you started by asking me a genre. Just a few of my favorites are Gunnerkrigg Court, El Goonish Shive, Namesake, Wilde Life and Paranatural.
Did someone say they wanted to read a webcomic with space boys in love?? Starfighter Oh, did someone mention they wanted to read a webcomic about an alien in love with a woman? Trying Human - About Wait, did someone ask for a webcomic about an alien in love with a boy? Space School || Home Was someone asking for love in space or did I read this wrong?????????????
I read a couple of different ones, but my favorite by far is Stasis Comic I adore the art, the story is fun and lighthearted (most of the time at least), and I'm so attached to the characters.
@Relew omg Flaky Pastry! I lost track of that when Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic moved platforms ages ago ... they were at the elven kingdom and Zintiel was about to unleash a bunch of demons or something. Last thing I remember is the girls wrecking the place while the elven guard tried to stop them rather than the apocalypse, or something I'm not much of a comic reader because I'm easily visually overwhelmed (mind can't make sense of all the squiggly lines and colours somehow), but some styles work better for me than others. Besides YAFGC, I follow What It Takes and Serious Engineering. Oh, and there was FreakAngels, but that's finished ...
What I tend to do is see a webtoon when they make a KDrama of it, then go read it LOL Cheese in the Trap, Orange Marmelade, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Misaeng, etc etc etc. I know it's backwards, LOL
I used to read a lot more than I do now, but a lot of them stopped updating or I lost interest. I also lost a great deal of my links on my old laptop. Now I only read a few. Here we go, in no particular order: Paranatural (linking to the archives of these to avoid spoilers) which is a fantasy/comedy/action story about a kid who moves into a very strange town. There are lots of spirits and some really creative worldbuilding. Also it's hilarious. Wilde Life is also about a guy who moves to a supernatural small town, but the spirits are of a decidedly different nature. There are also witches, werewolves, and monsters aplenty. Apothecia is a finished comic but it's one of my favorites. It's a science-fiction/horror/coming-of-age story about a girl who finds something nasty in the woods behind her house. I'll warn you it's not very action-packed, but it gives the reader a lot to think about. String Theory is a science-fiction/alternate history comic about a really arrogant scientist working for the government on teleportation. To say too much more would spoil the fun on this one. Disclaimer: the early art style isn't great, but WOW does it improve. The current pages are phenomenal. And of course Lackadaisy, which is about a small, struggling 1920s speakeasy, and the ragtag group of people trying to keep it afloat (or destroy it). The characters are all cats, but that's entirely a stylistic thing. Hands down the best art in the bunch, and the story is strong, too. Sadly it updates once in a blue moon, but it is absolutely worth it. And that's all I can really think of at the moment. If you wind up trying these, let me know what you thought!
@Jany That was not too long ago, at all. There's been a couple of short stories since, but she's taking a break from big plot stuff. Seriously, if you wanna catch up, it would not be hard. ouo @iamkathybrown Oh man, I forgot about El Goonish Shive and Gunnerkrigg Court! Those two are pretty good. There's also Skin Horse along those lines. @Pomomo @BlackSheep Oh man, I gave up on Lackadaisy so long ago. QAQ RIP crazy kitties!
@Relew Since it updates sporadically, I just follow the artist on social media and check when she posts updates. Relieves the stress of having to check all the time and find nothing. The story remains fantastic though and the art has only gotten better, so I do recommend catching up if it's still your thing.
Thank you for the links! The information on which you recommend and why really helped me to figure out which to read first. Also thank you so much for the information on when they update! SOMEONE ELSE READS GUNNERKRIGG YES. Ok, I'll check out the ones you mentioned and for genres know any other good supernatural or horror ones? I like pretty much every genre but those tend to be my favourites. Heck yeah love in space, I'm definitely checking those out. I'm especially looking forward to looking at Starfighter just from your description. Awesome! Sounds like the perfect mix for a great webcomic! Ah ok, I'll make sure to look at those. Thanks! I honestly had no clue those were originally webcomics, I need to look at descriptions more carefully So I've seen some of those pop up on my feed but sense I haven't watched them yet: Which do you recommend, KDramas first or webcomics first? Wow, those sound really good. I'll definitely check out all of them when I can! Thank you so much for the links and descriptions!
@Jany I loved Freak Angels! My favorite by far is Run Freak Run, which is a fantasy story set during the Spanish Inquisition. I joined Tumblr so I could follow theirs. Another absolute favorite is Fox Sister. Then there's PhD Comics and the classic, xkcd. For history, another classic is Hark a Vagrant I also like Romantically Apocalyptic, a mad love story at the end of the world--the graphics are fantastic! Then there's Girl Genius, Namesake (I think someone else mentioned), and Nimona. Then, for some laughs (or crying. Whichever) is Manfeels Park. And Medium: The Nib (a couple webcomics; USA politics).
Supernatural is one of my favorite genres (the other being fantasy, but there is a lot of overlap). I know Wilde Life is supernatural and horror. Paranatural is supernatural. There is also Kill Six Billion Demons (supernatural), two ones I just started called The Property of Hate (supernatural) and All Night Laundry (both, and I haven't finished, but I am working on it, it is pretty good, if a bit confusing, and it updates daily without fail which I have never seen), The Lonely Vincent Bellingham (supernatural, but poor update schedule, so beware), and Runewriters (supernatural/fantasy and on break, so good time to catch up. And she has a good track record for coming back when she says that she will). I am probably missing a few (I usually am), but that is all the ones that fit the category I can thing of for now.
Just an FYI to those interested in Starfighter, the comic that @Pomomo mentioned, it is graphic. Like, 18+ graphic. So be warned before going in. Oh, and Skin Deep is a really good fantasy/supernatural webcomic about mythological creatures being real and hiding among us.
Awesome, thank you! I've never seen a series update each day without fail, that's really impressive and kind of scary... Thank you for the recommendations and info! Oooohhh.... Yeah maybe not Starfighter for me then... Thank you for the warning.
I said Dumbing of Age updates every day! ;n; Lol, seriously though. That would be exactly why I added "plus three NSFW comics" to the end of my list. Starfighter was not one of the three, but it is one I've read that is NSFW. I figured that if someone's interested, they can send me a message, but it might not be a good idea to immediately link to an 18+ comic on a 13+ forum. So yeah. Warnings. Warnings can be good. XD
I think it's like whether to read the book first or see the film LOL A lot of times the drama/film will disappoint if you're already familiar with the webcomic. I certainly saw a lot of moaning & groaning about that in comments for some of those dramas. Misaeng, tho, just WOW. That's a real must-see Kdrama. One is airing right now that's from a webtoon (Bride of Habaek) - apparently different enough from the webtoon to cause bellyaching, but OMG the pretty can I JUST say... I so want to do a doll to look like Habaek as the Water God (played by Nam Joo Hyuk who just looks unearthly - as in no human can possibly be that gorgeous...LOL)
AAH I THINK I READ THAT AND THEN FORGOT I'M SO SORRY! Good job self, good job Yeah that makes sense, warnings are definitely good. For myself, I don't really like reading most 18+ series so yeaahh... Aaah so now to figure out if I want to watch the Kdrama which will spoil the webcomic, or the webcomic which will spoil the Kdrama. Great, my favorite thing. Haha, I think I'll watch the Kdramas? I don't have any that I'm currently watching so that might work. I could always just alternate with each series, that might work.
Oh my goodness, so many. I read about 5 minimum every weekday. - Misfile (art isn't my favorite but I'm interested in the story - has LGBT characters, fyi) Updates M-F - Kevin and Kell (anthropomorphic characters, also has LGBT characters but they aren't seen often). Updates 7 days/week. - Sandra and Woo (sometimes skates right on that PG-13 line, but is generally ok) Updates Monday and Thursday - Questionable Content ( LGBT characters, tough topics, androids - all handled really well.) Updates M-F - Two Lumps (two cats...it's interesting. Will sometimes bring up current events, mostly weather or cons) Updates MWF - Breaking Cat News (3 cats, one news station reporting on the News that Cats Trust) Updates 7 days/ week - Johnny Wander (mixed bag - autobio comics, story chapters/short stories, travel comics...) Updates Tues & Thurs Longer format: - Miss Abbot and the Doctor (Set in a...Victorian-ish, small town? It's not easy to describe without spoilers. ) Updates Sat. - I Love Yoo (Unlucky girl, lucky scenario? Don't know yet...but it's amusing watching the journey) Updates Friday - My Dear Cold-Blooded King (Asian setting (I see bits from all over East Asia, not trying to be dense), absolutely drop-dead gorgeous artwork, occasional music collaborations, and right now my favorite. I'd rate it a mid-to-strong PG13, more for violence than anything else right now.) Updates Sunday. Finished: Girls With Slingshots (they're re-uploading them with color as the originals were black and white. Archive is still up though). Colored strips posted MWF. Always Human (Main characters LGBT, nothing explicit. Freaking adorable, and highly recommend.) Archive up with sound - listen! It adds a lot to the comics.
I'm into webcomics! I both read and create them and I'm probably about 3/4 of the way done with mine Fine Sometimes Rain which is a slice of life romance about overcoming depression. Of course I'm gonna have to rec my webcomic friends work haha... Orange Junk | Sparkler Monthly Home - Love Debut! (this one is complete!) Children of the Night (dark shoujo with vamps) Novae Comic (historial, BL)
I read webtoons. I'm reading several for awhile, but I'm taking a break for awhile until more chapters are uploaded. Some I'm currently reading, want to read, or finished: 1. Eleceed, about super-powered people, a chubby thick cat that can talk, and more cats. 2. Lookism, about a high school boy who finds himself having a handsome new body he switches to when his other body falls asleep. 3. Surving as a fish, a man gets turn into a fish after an incident. 4. Surviving romance, a girl gets transported into a story as the female lead, but it turns from romance to horror zombie like creatures. 5. Extraordinary attorney woo, autistic lawyer like the kdrama. 6. Reborn rich, I haven't read this yet, but I hope it has a better ending. 7. 7FATES: CHAKHO, it's a fictional story about bts. 8. My daughter is a zombie, a girl turns into a zombie and her dad's love for her and hope for a cure. 9. Whale star, I think this one's based on a little mermaid set in korea. 10. My giant nerd boyfriend, just snippets of their lives as a couple with a height difference. It's fun. 11. The Star seekers, about txt fictional world. 12. Daily Jojo, I'm not sure how to describe this one. 13. Yumi's cells, there's a kdrama on this. I haven't seem it yet. 14. The little trashmaid, about a mermaid living in polluted waters. 15. Pigpen, psychological thriller. Slightly disturbing. You can read on the webtoon app to support the artist and writers.
I have to throw in another vote for Girl Genius! Of all the webcomics I've followed over the years, GG has to be my favorite (and the most consistantly updated!) There is a Chinese comic I follow, I believe it's a webtoon but I read it on another site for translations. It's called Villain Initialization and it's about a super villain who is sent back in time to his sixteen year old body attempting to kill his nemesis before he becomes invincible. The translation in the first few chapters was a bit spotty but the art and the story are so, so good.
