Anyone else forgets the name of their doll's sculpt..? Lol

Mar 16, 2026

    1. New Hello!

A bit of a silly post but honestly, I'm so impressed when I see Doll Profiles here with people knowing every name of the sculpt, body, sometimes even hands, skin tone etc !

I bought my girls a few years ago, all from love at first sight, and I think I should've kept a list. After some years I only remember their maker, but for some reason the specific name of their sculpt and skintone just flew out of my mind ! (Thankfully for most, I stuck with full dolls and so, I don't have to remember the name of their bodies and such..!)

What do you do to remember all of those ? Do you keep a list ? Do you remember these easily ?

    2. New I don’t forget and I have over 30 bjd, but I have documentation of them all anyway. It’s helpful to have the information in case something happens to me and someone else needs to sell my dolls. I have a big collection of other dolls that I keep track of for that reason also.

    3. New Write everything down. I didn't touch some of my dolls for nearly 10 years and there's no way I would have remembered anything if my young self didn't write almost every detail down! I'm still missing one doll arrival date which I feel bad about. I did write it down but I also wrote 3 different dates down in different places. :horror:

I will absolutely write everything down now !! Might have to go through a whole hunt to find the name of my old sculpt though ! Lol

    5. New
With my minimee heads i wrote in acrylic the name of the sculpt and others i have written on a piece of paper and put it into the head. With bodies I have to work it out

    6. New I have 63 dolls (egads!:?) And while I’m pretty good at remembering them all, I am very judicious about keeping up with my dolls list and Doll Profiles here on DoA. Once a doll is completed it goes on the list and I post a Doll Profile for it right away. It can be a godsend when you forget something later on.:3nodding:

    7. New I'm very organized in the way I keep things documented, otherwise I would absolutely forget some sculpts. :XD: I keep all basic information and then little snippets about their story.

    8. New Usually i remember all names and sculpts, but when I returned from my 5+ year hiatus, I had forgotten some of info, including few names. That’s why I’m pretty happy I had my database.

I still have a rule to keep all main information about my dolls. I find it helpful in many ways.

    9. New I do remember sculpt names, but I forget the names I give them! Makes me wonder why I bother to rename them.

Like others here, I also keep records of all pertinent info about each doll: company, sculpt, skin color, measurements, date of purchase, price, etc.

    10. New I forget my own name if I have a bad day  No seriously, seconding the use of documentation. It is so helpful. Say something breaks and you need a replacement. Maybe you want to sell a doll or doll part along the way. Or someone just asks you - hey cool doll, who are they?

If all else fails, you can always post a pic of the mysterious doll and ask the good folks here about the sculpt name. But keep your paperwork at all costs, like invoices etc, because, see above :3nodding:

I already had a few dolls when I realized documenting them would be a good thing, so I had to reconstruct everything from scratch, going through my posts, journal entries, everything. From then on I made a habit of keeping everything up to date. Yes, I tend to learn the hard way... :XD:

I think I will update all of them on DoA too so I don't forget them ! :)

This is so relatable to me. I forget their names too- I think it's time for a rebranding for me ! Hahaha

I think that's what I might end up doing for some of them. I remember doing researches for so long when I wanted to sell one of my dolls, but didn't keep her sculpt name when I bought her secondhand

I tend to learn the hard way too visibly, so i feel you! Time to start some documentation... hahaha !

    12. New It can be incredibly hard to find information too, so I'd start documenting now as best you can. For example, the sales page for the doll could be gone next year. Even the company can be gone in a year! If you don't have too many dolls, you can usually figure out the sculpt if you know the maker plus the resin tone based off options available on the page. Users here would be happy to help you ID, if you need help, but resin tones are very hard without anything to compare to! It's even worse because WS turns to a lighter NS color over time.

    13. New It helps that I only have three, and they're quite tiny (all below 20cm) so I can keep their COAs/receipts in their box, but I have two copies of their details - a digital copy of their documentation (receipts, emails, plus digital 'sticky notes' with their names, company & sculpt name, and some measurements) and any physical documents that came with them (barring the shipping manifests). If you want to be 100% sure, whenever you get a new doll (even if it's just 'new to you') find a copy place and make copies of their documents and keep them in a special file folder somewhere safe, but where you'll remember it is. You could also swap it round - keep the copies with the box in case of water damage, and the originals in a wooden or plastic file box safe from sun damage and water.

Some people keep a sort of 'album' of all their dolls, with a photo of the doll and a little info sheet of the doll's name, company name, sculpt name, skin tone, approximate age (usually calculated based on when the doll was ordered vs when it arrived) and how much was paid for the doll. It's mostly the older crowd that does it, as it makes it easier for people to find out what to do with one's 'estate'; basically, giving them an approximate idea of the doll's worth in case they want/need to sell your dolls after you've gone. Morbid as it is, this is a really good idea if you have a lot of dolls, because it centralizes all the information in one easy to reference place. Plus, you stay in this hobby long enough and you hear the horror stories of teens going off to college and returning to find their parents donated their dolls to a thrift store or sold them at a garage sale for a pittance.

    14. New I have no trouble remembering head sculpts, but resin color is another matter since the old normal/white/tan categories started falling out of fashion (for understandable reasons). Now every new doll artist seems to come up with their own bespoke animal-vegetable-mineral color names, and without a spreadsheet I can't remember whether a doll's color was called "petal" or "white peach" or "milk" or "rose quartz" lol.

    15. New I have a note on my phone with maker, sculpt name, exact size in cm, and skin tone! Or else I’d totally forget some of them lol. The only thing that helps me is that a lot of my dolls’ sculpts are pretty obscure and are named very specifically by the maker so they stick in my head :3

    16. New I have a small database of all my dolls with their arrival date, sculpt, resin colour, where I bought it from and any other noteworthy information. I save the webpage listings of secondhand dolls I buy for my own record keeping.
If I reach a point where I'm forgetting sculpt names, that would mean I have too many dolls and some of them need to go.

    17. New I remember all my dolls' sculpt names, makers and skin tones. I don't have that many of these kinds of dolls to be honest, I always wanted to keep my BJD numbers under ten. I do own more floating heads, so it probably seems like I have more but it's only six complete dolls and ten floating heads.

I don't keep lists, but my oldest one is twenty-three years old now. I actually have a terrible memory, but it's kind of a convenient one; I can clearly remember somethings, but not others. It's not an old age thing for me, I always had a memory issues since I was young. I don't always remember the important things either, but luckily I do remember my dolls sculpts, which could be important if I ever planned to sell, but that's not happening as long as I'm alive. (:

    18. New In the beginning of the hobby, I was so obsessed that I lived and breathed BJDs all day every day and had no issue remembering all my dolls and even identifying almost any doll I saw online. But then I took a bit of a hiatus...life happened and I had to step back and focus on other things. When I came back I found I had forgotten a lot of things...It was only then that I started a list. I use Notion to keep all my dolls' info. It was hard to go back and find some info, like who I purchased dolls from, etc, but my list is as complete as it can be now and I keep it updated so I don't have to worry about forgetting anything now. :) My memory has always been sketchy at best so having it all written down gives me so much peace of mind!

    19. New I have been for longer than ten years out of the hobby, I had all my dolls stored and never kept any records of their makers of sculpts. When I took them out of their boxes last year, I found out I could remember all their sculpt names but one. Not owning any hybrid doll helped too! The most strange thing of it all is that I just forgotten the name of the sculpt and maker of the doll I used to play the most. I was very lucky to found out that info on pictures I had upload on flirck years ago! :kitty2
What I had totally forgotten was the sculpt names of the dolls I owned in the past.
The only thing I regret is about not writing down the dates of their arrivals :...(

    20. New I keep a record of all of my dolls and their sculpts, bodies, makers, etc. It's currently on a neocities site. I have over 40, so it's kind of necessary. I also have some record of arrival dates (the day and month anyway) but not the years. I plan to port this list over to a spreadsheet for anyone who might come across the collection after I'm gone, but I've only gotten so far with that.

Anyway the short answer to your question: yes, I do forget sometimes. An especially confusing situation is that I have a doll named Noah, and then a doll whose sculpt is named Noah. They are not the same doll. That's what the list is for lol.

    21. New This is something that's just generally pretty easy for me. I've been very detail oriented ever since I was a young child. Like even at age 6, I had a binder with character sheets for my dolls and stuffed animals! Nothing too in depth back then, but like their full name, birthdate, what kind of animal they were, their likes and dislikes. Now, I still have a binder of character sheets for my dolls, but they go wayyyyy more in depth, and I do memorize most of it, but a few things I don't think about often do require checking. (But I'm also the person in my 40s who can still name everybody who was in my first grade class by full name and probably birthdays on half of them. And remember that my stuffed seal's full name is Pearson Yomiko Pupp and his birthday is July 7. :XD:)

Skin tones...that's kind of a different story. Especially when it comes to darker skin. like I know the doll is the company's version of brown or whatever, but I forget what they call it. Tan? Dark tan? Brown? Dark brown? Mocha? Chocolate? Sunlight? Sunburned? Real skin? Cream brown? Milk brown? Tawny? Peach gold? Ebony? Homme? Latte? SO many names out there for "brown" or "tan" that I tend to forget unless it's a company I buy from a lot. Even lighter skins, with the white, beauty white, snow, milk, Mia white, vampire, sugar, etc. Or normal, natural, meringue beige, apricot, peach.

Remembering bodies is pretty easy, as I tend to shop around for specific body types, unless I'm happy with the default. Either way, pretty easy. I'm pretty good at identifying dolls, too. Like I recently came across a super cheap "unidentified" BJD on ebay and could tell from thepics that the body (which I wanted most) was FDoll, but was unsure on the head. He turned out to be a legit Leekeworld Romeo. I was really unsure of the head from pics but as soon as he was in my hand, I was like "hmmm...I think Leekeworld" even though I haven't owned a Leekeworld head in over a decade.

    22. New So... counting off-topic dolls, I have well over a hundred dolls, and I know all of their names. Why? Heck if I know. But I have a rule that if I can't remember their name, it must not have been the right name for them and I rename them.

Sculpt names, on the other hand... those I have to keep careful track of. Very few of my dolls (other than my Alans), I can remember their sculpt names off the top of my head.

    23. New As I entered the hobby I had a profile and description of the dolls I bought in order on Flickr. When Flickr limited the posts on free accounts I downloaded all my photos and deleted them off Flickr.

Years later, I realized all the information about them is gone and I’m having to look back and research where I got them, who I got them from and when I got them. I need to make a list but (I have so many)!!!! :doh

I highly recommend organizing all this information starting with your very first doll! :thumbup

    24. New I have a doll or two that Ive forgotten the sculpt name for XD in that case its mostly because I bought them second hand at a swap and in the excitement of the moment forgot to write down exactly what they were. I actually need to go reach out to a few folks online and see if I can get some help so that I can make profiles for them here..... and I should probably start keeping a dedicated database. ( im not great a organization)

    25. New There are many factors that make remembering my crew being so easy. (Of course I also take note)
      - I only have a few : 7years in this hobby with only 6full dolls and 1practice head make it's easy to remember and bond with everyone slowly

**This only count for the one that stay.. I did sell some dolls, but I'm on the side that can realize quickly if the doll is working for me or not, no one that didn't bond stay longer than 6 Months. The one who stay will stay, and have solid place in the story.

      - The sculpt name itself are also easy to remember : I coincidentally ended up to have all my girl sculpts name after a character in fairytale and all boy sculpts with only single syllable name

But yes, please take note and record everything. I recently also finish making database for all Eyes, Wigs and Shoes I have, hopefully I can finish the clothing database this year. :cheer

    26. New I have a terrible memeory in general, and it's multiplied by infinity when it comes to anything to do with numbers.

Back in the day (aroudn 2005) I fel in love with most of the head sculpts by RML (Real Missing Link) when they were still an active company on the BJD scene, and they only gave their sculpts numbers instead of names. I constantly have to look up old pjhotos of them and check the captions to be sure I'm using the right number when sharing new pictures of my dolls.

I have seven of the R20J sculpt (well, several of the R20J and several of the R-01 which are the same sculpt but the R20J has removable ears that can be swapped out for elf ears), and that's the only one i can remember the name/number of with any degree of reliability.

On top of that issue, I have htem all on different bodies from a variety of companies and , for the most part, I have no idea what the different skintones are called, and can't reliably rememebr the name of the body or the company when asked.

And it also doesn't help that some companies tweak the names of their sculpts so the names they sell under now are slightly different form what they were when I bought the heads (looking at you Ninodoll, listing a head as Juri when it was released butd changing it to Juli some years later!!)

    27. New Yup, that started to become an issue for me, not remembering the names of my sculpts. So, I keep my records (besides my COA box) right here on DoA. If you click my name, it leads to my doll information. Every time I get a new doll, I add their pertinent information to my doll list. A few of my hybrids, I do not know what body they wear, and I need to undress them, post some pics here to DoA and ask some of the extremely doll knowledgeable persons here to help me discover who might have made the bodies, but I have not yet. (I have 2 giant Coleman books to research my many off-topic dolls that I collected pre-bjd when I was younger for my 1930's composites and 1900's bisques.)

    28. New I have a near photographic memory, which makes it fairly easy for me to fit all of the various information regarding my dolls inside my one noggin. That said, in the event that something were to happen to me, I have set aside a spreadsheet of my dolls' companies, hybridizations, skin tone, and original price point that I paid. Having an easy reference point is not only nice for me to have, but it also means that my husband or another loved one would be able to sell my dolls posthumously with relative ease.

I highly recommend having a spreadsheet of your own if at all possible!
