Tutorial Anyone Can Sew: Shirts Tutorial (All-Sizes, Pattern Free)

Aug 1, 2008

    1. Although it took me a couple of tries (I have a tendency to make clothes smaller than I mean to) I finally made a long-sleeved shirt and short-sleeved shirt that I'm incredibly proud of. Thank you so much for this step-by-step tutorial~ :fangirl:

    2. Oh my god O_O thank you so much for this tutorial, it seems very easy, when my DD arrives I 'll try to do one of this t.shirts for her ^^

    3. nice work :D

      thanx for sharing

    4. This was the very first time I've ever actually tried to sew, not counting the pillow I made in high school. Pillows are pretty simple haha, but I think Bae's shirt really turned out, concidering it was my first try! So thank you for teaching me what to do! <3 Bae had been shirtless for about a year, now he is finally dressed and I'm sure he appericiates it too!

    5. waouuuu thanks so much

    6. You're tutorials are great! So easy to understand and follow! Thank you again!!

    7. Thanks so much for this! Do you have a system like this for sewing skirts? Panda_Aki, I can't believe that's your first shirt, it looks great!

    8. Thank for tutorial I will try to do it ><

      It's vary great!!!

    9. Ragdoll, how did you make (Given that you made it and didn't buy it xD) that green underbust dress thing on the doll with the orange hair? :o I've been wanting to make something like that for ages!

EDIT: Silly me, I realise now that you made it with this very pattern xD Brain-fart much?

    10. Sadly I suck at sewing since no mater how much a seam allowance I leave. It's always too small on my dolls :(

    11. @ echo-chan173 maybe you should try to use fabric which is kind of elastic/stretchy?
This makes the seam allowance a bit higher and even if it ends to be a bit small because of the strech it may still suit your doll?

Thank you for the tutorial! It's really great.

    12. About the machine eating the fabric, I have a very good solution for this that's not a pain to get off.

Tissue paper. Yes, tissue paper. I use it all the time when I need to sew small stuff. Works a charm as long as you are careful when removing it, but you should have no problem getting it all off.

Experiment on what thickness you need as some tissue paper will be too thin, but just folding it in half can help in that case :thumbup

    13. This is simply genius!

    14. Your tutorials are fantastic. I can't wait to try it out!

    15. My word that was a tight fit! But the shirt fits snugly and the little hole in the sleeve is barely noticeable! 10/10 will spend another hour making one for my msd boy!! :D

    16. Another awesome tutorial! Im so excited to try! :D

    17. Aka Tyou: your doll and outfit is so cute.

    19. wow, I will try to use this for making clothes! Looks easy!

    22. I successfully made a shirt for my Pukifee using this tutorial :) Thanks! The collar is a little goofy but from the right angles you can't tell, so good enough... :P

    23. I made one! Hand sewn... my hand and back are totally cramped solid... but I did it!

    24. Nice work everyone thanks for the tutorial.

    25. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. When i get my girl i'll have a go. bookmarked

    26. A couple of hints/tips:

      1) You can keep your machine from eating your fabric by sewing a few stitches on a "starter piece" of fabric first. Sew a couple of stitches no the edge and then off the end of the starter piece. Leave needle down. Raise presser foot and insert garment until it abuts the needle. Sew away! Just trim the extra piece off when finished and reuse. This is a quilters' trick, as they usually use 1/4" seam allowances.

      2) Baby clothes (onesies and such) are made from small print, lightweight knits. They can be expensive new, but thrift shops and yard sales can be good sources of those fabrics. If you go to yard sales, go early, the baby clothes sell out FAST!

    27. Very nice! Adding this to my list of tutorials to try. :)

    28. Thank you very much for this tutorial, i'm not good in jersey fabrics(

    29. This makes me really want to fix my sewing machine.

    30. Thank you so much! This is very helpfull to me! A little tip for the "eating fabric machine": You have to pull the threads gently before to start stitching. I hope you can understand me, english is not my first language... Anyway, thank you again!!!
      :dance

    31. I love that from one shirt tutorial you can create so many different items. Brilliant tutorial, used it for all of my dolls and it never fails.

    32. ohhhhhh. so thats how you do it. But then you'd have to remove the doll's head to put the clothes in right? that;s neat.

    33. Another excellent tutorial! Thanks for keeping this going.

    34. This is a great tutorial. I have to try this! <goes to look for the jeans tutorial>

    35. Your tutorials are pretty cool ! I think I'll give a try when I'll have more time !

    36. This looks helpful...

    37. This is a good idea. You can get a designing ruler from a sewing shop. It helps you to get curves even. Doesn't cost very much but worth having. Also another thing you can do is fold the front piece in half to get it even on both sides. Very good effort.

    38. Thank you for the tutorial~~~ I made my YoSD one~~ is super cute xD

    39. Thank you for this tutorial. I tried making a pair of pants for my msd boy but cut them too small. :c I'll have to try again if I can get more fabric, aha.

    40. I have a ton of shirts to make now

    41. This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing! I can't wait to make a brigade of T-shirts now!

    42. I love your tutorials! They are so easy to understand, especially to a beginner seamstress like me :)

    43. Thank you for posting this! I've been keen to start learning how to sew for my dolls but it's a different method to sewing full size and honestly confused me a little. Your tutorial is easy to follow and I can't wait to pull out a sewing machine and try.

    44. why americans use the word "shirt" both for 'camicia' and 'maglietta'? ... wah

    45. It might just be that we're generalizing it all as "tops". We have shirt, blouse, chemise, button up, raglan, sweatshirt, tons of different things that we can and do classify as "shirt". What are the differences between the two words that you used? Sorry, I don't know what they mean.

    46. "Maglietta" is actually "t-shirt" in English. ^^ But we use "shirt" as a general term a lot of times.

    47. Really nice tutorial! Now to find jersey fabric...

    48. Oh my gosh this is such a great tutorial! I've made 4 shirts, two vests and like 7 pairs of pants from your tutorials!
This is a picture of Juniper gathering some flowers and herbs in his new shirt and vest!

    49. its so easy to do and guess i got the pattern and would follow it and try doing it :D

    50. You make it look so easy to sew! I must try to do this :) hope you make more tutorials ^^

    51. I really wanna try this! :kitty1 I'd make tight-fitting short dress~♥

    52. A really great tutorial that makes you want to try it !!! Thank you for sharing !!!

    53. I've been having a downright awful time trying to sew shirts (it's so easy when it's human sized grr!) and my first try at this has been the closest I've gotten. Still messed it up though (total human error on the sleeves) 1/6 scale is not kind ┐(´~`)┌
Also I may be doing it wrong but I just can't seem to turn the collar so that the stitches are on the inside. Can't tell if it's me or what. >3>

    54. Oh Wow! I love this thread! As soon as my fingers aren't swollen from removing my doll's foot (ouch! pinched really hard one ginher on one hand and one on other hand) I will definitely try this. I have some solid white stretchy fabric!:celebrate

    55. Following! I can't wait to use this pattern :)

    56. is there a place to view the pictures for this tutorial?

    57. @ragdoll Oh, no! It looks like the photobucket problem ate your pics. Do you have them someplace else? It's so sad, you put so much effort into it and now the photos are gone.... :sorry:pout::atremblin:...(

    58. Hey so I trolled through the source code and downloaded all the images and put the entire tutorial up in this google doc for anyone that needs it as badly as I still do XD Enjoy, and please let me know if anything's not showing up right!

If the original creator has a problem with me reposting it in docs, please just let me know and I'll take it down ^__^
