Anybody ever accidentally sand off their fingerprints?

Feb 24, 2022

    1. I've been sanding a 3D printed doll all day (avoiding the news). Finally gave in, started trying to play on my phone - and the fingerprint sensor doesn't recognize my fingerprint. Pretty sure I sanded it off. :doh

      Anyone else done this?

How long until it comes back? :...(

    2. I've never sanded them off but one year when I worked at the RenFaire, I burned mine off.

Took a few weeks in my case but burning them off comes with the process of healing from the burns too. So it may be considerably less for sanding.

In any case, I hope it's fast for you!

    3. Chances are that when it grows back it's different so you'll have to recalibrate the sensors. I hope it heals soon for you.

    4. I usually do a lot of sanding when sculpting, so my fingerprints are not as sharp as they used to be. My solution was to use my left hand's middle finger on the cell phone's sensor, since it doesn't get as much action as my indexes and thumbs.

    5. I'm going to have to do this!

    6. Not sanded as such but working in the aquatics trade wrecks havoc on your fingertips. Handling rough abrasive rocks, moving sand about when cleaning, using abrasive pads for cleaning algae, constant immersion in water and even getting stung, stabbed and bitten by fish, corals and anemones can make quite a mess of hands. Couldn’t use any fingerprint recognition tech while I had that job!

I’ve also burned off fingerprints by accident too, once in school during metalwork class when reflex action worked quicker than common sense….put my finger on a piece of red hot metal to steady it…..and several times taking ceramics out of kilns.

I also used to have a hardened, smoothed fingertip as a child because I was always catching insects and invertebrates and frequently got bitten or stung.

      I’m hopeless lol

    7. Your fingerprints should come back the same. Go get some soothing and hydrating lotion, if you can stand the stuff on your skin, and eat foods or take vitamins that help with skin health.

    8. @Blodeuwedd - got a good chuckle out of your post. You and I are very hard on our hands! Although I'm doing office work now, and it is a lot easier on the fingies. (Where are these fingernails coming from, lol? You mean I have to clip my fingernails?!? I'm used to them breaking off from constant abuse.)

@DollyKim - they did indeed come back. But I took @LilaAIP's suggestion and have started using other fingers for phone fingerprint recognition, and hoo buddy, that was a great suggestion.

    9. @MaleficentMrsofEvil yes I’ve always been pretty rough on my hands and, like you, found it weird when I had a job where my hands were treated nicely (the only abuse they got working at Lush was overdosing on nice smelling soaps and lotions), I’m not used to that, if my hands aren’t cut or scratched and nails not broken then it isn’t work to me!
Although I’m not working currently due to mental health reasons my pets (small parrots, fish and a gecko) keep my hands scratched, bitten, etc just like the old days!

    10. Sand, no... However I have used a bathroom cleanser that made my finger creepily smooth.

    11. Those enzyme treatments for carpets I think will murder your fingerprints if you let it. I have an elderly cat who I think sometimes forgets she has a litter box and chooses to use the floor … sometimes right outside the box. :doh
I find that (uber-pricey) My Pet Peed treatment works the best to take up stains and smells but when I was refilling the spray bottles with it (I keep one on each floor), some was spilling and got on my hands and I noticed the tips of my fingers were turning white. Like I could actually see my fingerprints outlined. :aeyepop: Like maybe it was trying to enzyme my skin or something. Didn’t really hurt or anything but I washed my hands real quick just the same. :XD:

    12. Would there be any use putting some rubber sink mats around the litter box? Or making a wider flatter litter tray? That helped our less mobile older cat.

    13. I'm currently taking a medication that my doctor warned me in rare cases could remove my fingerprints. I really hope it won't since my fingerprint is how I get into my phone as well as a lot of important aps.
