I can't find any movies I want to watch. Are there any good movies that anyone can recommend? I prefer that the movies are not rated r or mature. Old movies from a long time ago are good too, since I like watching things about a different era I never experienced. I'm trying to watch Encanto, but before I watched the movie I learned the main character doesn't have magic unlike the rest of her family that sort of spoils the movie for me. I don't like when a character is left out like that. Why does everyone in the movie have a special power except the main character. That's like in Harry Potter when a child is born into a Wizarding family without magic makes me feel sad for them.
I was going to just start recommending but perhaps you could share more what you like or don't like (besides just the family appropriate rating), since some types of plot or whatnot are just more stressful than others for people.
Ghibli movies are great, if you haven't watched them already. I'd recommend Laputa Castle In The Sky, Ponyo, Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service. They're all suitable for all ages but still have solid and enjoyable stories, as well as nice animation. Similar, but from a different animation studio, is Mary And The Witch's Flower, which I'd also recommend. All of these movies are available in their original Japanese (with English subtitles) or with an English voice cast. Sorry that they're all animated movies. I don't really know many family friendly non-animated movies. As for Encanto, I think the main character having no powers is kind of the whole point of the movie, it's part of her journey. I don't really want to spoil it for you, but her initially feeling left out is what moves the plot of the movie, and I think it's absolutely worth a watch, as this of course gets resolved with the climax of the plot. It was a good movie in my opinion.
Two of my favorite movies are Detective Pikachu and Minions! They are both so cute I want to hug the little detective and minion Bob!
I love animated movies. I haven't watched ghibli films in a long time. I like minion Bob too. I don't watch Pokémon, but I think i will give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion. I always felt bad for the Pokémon being in captivity and fighting like that, so i felt bad for them whenever i tried watching. @AlisonVonderland I like animated movies, psychological, historical, and thrillers. Pretty much anything except for horror and too much romance. It can have romance, but not be too focused on it unless it's a kdrama. I just don't want to watch anything too graphically violent (squid game was a good story, but was really far from my comfort zone. it was so bloody and violent.) or having s**in it (this is the reason why i have a hard time with american shows). I don't know if i can spell that word on this forum. I hope it makes sense. I like things like I Love Lucy, Studio Ghibli, and kdramas. I also like shows that make me think like All Of Us Are Dead ( the graphic violence was pretty hard to watch and I was extremely squeamish, but I saw references to the Sewol Ferry tragedy, so I continued watching it. It made me think a lot.). I really like I Love Lucy. I was sad to find out the cast were deceased. I thought it was set in the past, but was a modern show when I watched awhile ago. I do occasionally watch horror if the story and acting is really good like Son the Guest, but I find myself closing my eyes for a lot of the show. I forgot I don't like chick flick, sports, bad acting movies, horror, animal cruelty, or movies with s**. I know people really like Twilight, but I thought it was comedy because the acting. I don't think it was meant to be a comedy. Anyway that was the only movie I ever walked out on. I feel like my examples don't make sense, but I just realized I'm really picky with movies. That explains why I don't watch many movies.
I feel like I understand the basic metric of what you like/don't like no worries I can relate in being very picky and sensitive to certain types of things. I will say that I personally like silly comedy movies a lot or just fun surreal comedy which you might not like but I'll recommend some stuff I love: Rankin Bass animated Hobbit movie (1977) Wind in the Willows (1995) Homeward Bound (talking pets wilderness adventures) Ever After (90s Cinderella interpretation), things work out well for her even though there are some tough moments Annie (1981) Alice in Wonderland (1999) Charlotte's Web (1973) Wizard of Oz I also wholeheartedly recommend many studio Ghibli movies Oh actually... They aren't very good exactly but I could watch pretty much any of the animated Pokemon movies and enjoy them More movies that show my age are Rockadoodle The great mouse detective And Freddy the Frog (this was my childhood favorite) Rescuers down under (I'm sure the others are good too) The original Fantasia Silly/weird comedy: Nacho Libre (2006) Yellow Submarine (1968) Monty Python (might be too adult in some ways but it's not serious and any violence would not be believable so it depends if that makes it ok or not) I really love all those personally. It's hard when I'm trying to think of them. If I think of anything else I'll return.
The Neverending Story - 1984 fantasy What’s Eating Gilbert Grape - 1993 drama Now and Then - 1995 drama - set mostly in the 70s Edward Scissorhands - 1990 fantasy/drama The parent trap - The version with Haley Mills 1961 family Matilda - 1996 family Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 1991 action/sci-fi The Silence of the Lambs - 1991 psychological thriller Rain Man - 1988 drama Stand By Me - 1986 drama
The 1995 Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth is the greatest thing ever made. It's a miniseries.
I really like Bedknobs and Broomsticks (my favorite movie as a kid!) Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang (another favorite) Wizard of Oz (or The Wiz if you can find it) The 1st My Little Pony movie (Escape from Midnight Castle? From the 80s) The Wind in The Willows Monsters Inc (LOVE this) Hocus Pocus (haven't seen the second one...)
This is not for children, but I consider it a work of art: On Netflix catch 'Jibaro' episode 13 of Love, Death, and Robots.
The Last Unicorn will hit you in the feels, it's a shortened but faithful take on the book and there's a follow up. The original 70s Picnic At Hanging Rock has a bit of a cliffhanger, I dislike them a lot, but what I'd consider a good one that makes you think. And it's beautiful to look at. I think it's My Little Pony The Movie from 1986 that's being recommended, the one with the schmooze? Danny DeVito is a voice actor so it should be easy to find.
I had no idea they were based on books. I only saw the really recent movies and the cartoon. Thanks I will go check out the older versions. Are the ones in the 80s the originals? So the ones I saw are like remakes?
I have a massive soft spot for food movies. Hence I recommend "Babette's Feast," which is also a period movie, "Big Night," another period movie, "Mostly Martha" and "Eat Drink Man Woman," both modern day films.
There's only one Last Unicorn movie to my knowledge. The Picnic at Hanging Rock movie from Australia with flute music is the original. Those are based on books, like The Neverending Story and The Princess Bride. The 80s My Little Pony movies aren't related to the newer ones, they are their own brand of insanity.
Regarding the aforementioned My Little Pony movies/specials/80s g1s: The first special ever made for the toyline overall is Rescue at Midnight Castle. It's premise involves the introduction of Firefly, Megan, Tirac, and both the rainbow of light and rainbow of darkness. It's not so much a movie, but a special. The My Little Pony movie involving the smooze and the witches was a theatrically released feature from 1986. There was also another special called Escape From Katrina, which involved a catlady who created a potion to maintain her youth, and tries abducting some ponies to work on its creation. Further with the first MLP generation's media releases: There were several mini specials called My Little Pony and Friends. There's also this weird in between G1 and G2 periods' series called My Little Pony Tales that had them more anthropomorphized and living in a more human-like environment. Slice of Life probably best describes it. clarification on the different generations of MLP: The early to mid 80s releases are considered a part of the original generation, or generation one. Generation two, which had much less fanfare and media presence, were skinnier versions released in the mid/late 90s. Gen 3 was released around 2003 with ponies that more closely resembled the G1s, while being a bit more slimmed down (G3 had a few animated specials, but no other TV/movie tie-ins). Generation four, AKA Friendship is Magic, is the four revival of the toyline—with the addition of that very popular TV series tied directly to them. Since that show wrapped generation five (which has a more CGI stylized animation) has started airing specials on Netflix (I believe that's where they're available) Regarding the original question: Your Name, an anime movie released around 4-5 years ago with a bit of a Freaky Friday plot involving two teenagers (a boy and a girl) swapping bodies at random. There is much more to the story, but going into detail would be spoilers. Hook (tale of a grown up Peter Pan, played by Robin Williams) How to Train Your Dragon trilogy Dreamworks 2D animated features like Quest for Camelot, The Prince of Egypt, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, maybe Sinbad and/or Road to Eldorado Dreamworks CGI: Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Captain Underpants, Rise of the Guardians Legend of the Guardians: the Owl of Ga'Hoole (CGI movie involving owls) Labyrinth (the David Bowie movie with Jim Henson studios' puppets) Into the Spiderverse (It's a Spiderman movie, but it has its own unique thing with a unique artstyle and a focus on a different version of Spiderman than the usual) Treasure Planet Titan AE Hopefully there's something in there to tickle your fancy
Thanks these sound interesting. I will check them out. I didn't know there were so many generations to the pony shows. I think I must have seen a little bit of generation 4. I know I've seen the recent animated movies from netflix.
I will add some suggestions to for others of shows i watched recently that are kid friendly: Bread Barbershop Netflix Hello Jadoo youtube The Haunted House Netflix scary korean animated cartoon Pui Pui Molcar Molang korean character made into I think a French cartoon? I only watched a little because I think there was no dialogue The Cuphead Show The Mitchells vs the machines The Little Princess A silent voice Boss baby movies Netflix and Hulu Boss baby series Netflix Avatar the last Airbender Netflix, this was I think last year or whenever Netflix got this show. This was fun. My Little Pony the most recent ones on Netflix Larva Pucca, watched a little because not much dialogue Trollhunters Captain underpants Dawn of the croods Wish dragon Over the moon A whisker away Turning red Luca The peanuts movie Shang-chi, not exactly kid friendly because the violence but I think that it wasn't that bad. Toy Story series, but I tend to skip Toy Story 4 even though I really like that one because of a bad memory tied to it after I watched the movie. Bao
Old movies: Casablanca Imitation Of Life ( Lana Turner and Sandra Dee) Where The Boys Are The Nutty Professor ( Disney version) The Incredible Mr. Limpet (man turns into a fish ) Freaky Friday ( Jodi Foster stars in it) Herbie Herbie Rides Again Escape To Witch Mountain Mary Poppins ( Julie Andrews) The Sound Of Music There is NO cursing in these movies that I can recall, hope you can find them and watch.
Willow (1988) - a fantasy movie about a young man who sets out on an adventure to save an infant, making friends along the way. Legend (1985) - a young man must save the unicorns, or else the world will be pitched in to an eternal winter. The Lost Boys (1987) - Two brothers move to a new city and discover not all their new friends are what they seem.
We watched Megan and liked it. It is about Artificial Intelligence. Megan is like Alexa, only with arms and legs. She is a "doll" for children.
Old movies I like: Heidi To have and have not Dial m for murder Roman holiday I also love Jane Austen and Charles dickens So, Bleak house, David Copperfield (there's one that has Daniel Radcliffe and Maggie Smith!), Jane Eyre. Mansfield Park, There's so many more if you like those.
Bit of a necro'd thread, but someone might still need suggestions - Memoirs of a Geisha, it's a favorite of mine. Mostly because of the music, but it is visually beautiful too. - Rango, another movie I really like! I'd suggest the Zucker brothers works (Airplane!, Naked Gun). They are very funny, but I guess they can get slightly mature/raunchy at times..? More kid friendly suggestions: most Dreamworks animated movies hold up well. Megamind, How to Train your Dragon, Kung-Fu Panda... The latest Puss in Boots movie (Last wish? or something like that) was a visual delight.
Disney Plus has some good stuff for anyone interested. I watched some older movies from when I was a kid on there recently. Here are a few suggestions of some older films I like: - The Princess Diaries 1 and 2 - Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (90’s version) - Night at the Museum 1 and 2 - Love Actually - Clueless - Stuart Little - Back to The Future (I like the first 2 best) - Charlotte’s Web - Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
I’ve got a few nonviolent, non R movies. Chaplin: City Lights, The Circus, Modern Times, The Kid, Limelight Any/all Fred Astaire / Ginger Roger movies Any Buster Keaton movie or short Defending Your Life Local Hero The Muppet Movie Singin in the Rain Wings of Desire
I know it's a spicy one, but I'll second The Labyrinth. I just rewatched it for the first time in maybe 10 years and my love for the goblin king is completely renewed. Do not watch this one with your parents!!!!
I love anything with the Marx Brothers or Danny Kaye, for comedies-- Duck Soup is my favorite Marx Brothers film, and The Court Jester for Danny Kaye, but you can't go wrong. Also Cary Grant-- movies like Holiday, Bringing Up Baby, Arsenic and Old Lace... The great thing about old movies is, if you do want to avoid graphic violence or too much overt sexual content but you DO still want to watch an adult movie in terms of, like... just the place in life characters are in, or having thrillers that don't go too far into territory that you don't want, it's very easy to find old movies that keep those parts toned down while still giving you deep plots. witness for the Prosecution is a really good mystery, and I love Hitchcock's Rear window I'm also a big fan of animated films-- most of my favorites have been mentioned, but I also really love Flight of Dragons
