After seeing Soom Anubis and a couple other independent artists on IG who're exploring some Egyptian mythos themes, I fell in love with the elegant shapes of the animal heads of the gods/goddess. My local library's 3d printers just opened up and I was able to start using it last week, and now that I have access to a 3d printer, i was inspired to make my own anubis head mask Saturday evening (of course inspiration hits now instead of during all the down time during pandemic). This was my 2nd time sculpting something from scratch and it'd been almost 2yrs since my first time, so my work flow may be pretty off. The below gif is Saturday evening's work https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/799347596069044306/868732466049994762/20210725_005041.gif Then today I finished hollowing and slicing up the head to be a mask or a head depending on the use of the head back. Theoretically the head will accept 16mm eyes, 6x4mm cylindrical magnets at the chin/headback and perhaps the forehead if I want to do a mask head on by magnets on the face and the headback should accept 10cm neck sizes. Admittedly the hook for the headback will have to be very small or be a rod due to the head space, but i'll think about that later lol. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/799347596069044306/869317652697481216/unknown.png https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/799347596069044306/869317894788485140/unknown.png On Saturday, I hope to print out at least the faceplate/mask portion in black ABS which i'll then vapor polish, spray with matte sealant, use gold pearlex blushing, and gold leaf paint around the eyes.
Cool! Looking forward to the finished product! 3D printers sure are game changers in the props department!
Printed at the library today, and while it's mostly finished, the head back didn't quite finish printing the magnet connection bit, so i'll have to try printing the headback again in like a couple weeks. But for trying on for size, it was good enough with some sticky tack and masking tape lol one point I'd like people's thoughts on is the length of the snout. I sculpted the head to have exaggerated features, but i'm wondering if I made the snout length too exaggerated. I kind of like how the head/faceplate looks on its own, but then on a body or as a mask, i'm not so sure faceplate https://i.imgur.com/o2Up9j0.jpg https://i.imgur.com/MJQrBT3.jpg showing the partial print head back in the the background https://i.imgur.com/Rq7HE1U.jpg Mask version held on a DF-A 1/3rd head with a magnet system. https://i.imgur.com/Bi7l1sQ.jpg mask(faceplate)+headback on a Luts SDF65 slim body https://i.imgur.com/9tUjpgO.jpg https://i.imgur.com/o5dZeqB.jpg the degree of head movements Spoiler https://i.imgur.com/pYSt02t.jpg https://i.imgur.com/vgkuOxD.jpg https://i.imgur.com/MbHgaq5.jpg https://i.imgur.com/J5dL9sI.jpg stuff left: -print a complete headback -acetone vapor smooth -faceup with gold -potential reprint with shorter snout?????
Ended up reprinting with a shorter snout, and i like it much more this way and finally bought some nail polish remover which should work well enough for acetone smoothing. I just need to figure out a contraption inside the jar so that it's not touching the sides. https://i.imgur.com/A4BQLzd.jpg https://i.imgur.com/qpNYokC.jpg https://i.imgur.com/n0L3m5k.jpg https://i.imgur.com/IPeKDq3.jpg https://i.imgur.com/P6fuEHV.jpg what's left on the to do list: -print a complete headback -acetone vapor smooth -faceup with gold
Finally got around to polishing. I ended up polishing the long nose version so that i could practice before i did the final short nose. (btw, nail polish remover is mostly useless for polishing ABS prints. don't waste time/money like i did, and just go for 100% acetone from the beginning) Acetone vapor smoothed in the background vs plain print in the foreground. https://i.imgur.com/fQx4viG.jpg I then sprayed MSC to dull the high gloss shine. but i'm finding it looks/feels very dusty?? despite the dust, i went a head and practiced some gold embellishment designs on the eyes and ears. I think i prefer the gold dusted ears over the sold painted ears, and I def prefer the thinner eyeliner. https://i.imgur.com/VPj2dyf.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3trJiAT.jpg What are your thoughts? Left on the to do list: -finish faceup practice on long noses -faceup short nose -make head dress -make/find golden eyes with black sclera??
Finished making eyes and I'm so pleased with them compared to the glass eyes before. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/715319244186976308/892466815765205022/20210928_124143.jpg https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/715319244186976308/892466816163655750/20210928_124122.jpg Now to go to the fabric store to make a nemes~
Pinned nemes. Still gotta figure out how to sew loops to hook on to the chain. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/125850139842707456/892608128623984710/20210928_215048.jpg https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/125850139842707456/892608129165037608/20210928_215322.jpg
