Whooo update page 2, FINALLY O: I'm horrible at titling these things. x3 Well, anywho-ways, in a general project to dodge the "can't afford a BJD" factor, I've delved into sculpting and I admittedly like it, and so here comes a second head. He's MSD sized. I was shooting for a dreaming-type look, and I hope I achieved it - he's not cooked yet (he's made of supersculpey) so that I can fix whatever faults you can find on him - so please, do me the favor and tell me what you like and don't like! Don't be afraid to tell me whatever sort of critique you can dish out, as long as you specify it of course, because when you say "Ugh, that's ugly!" I don't have much to go on x3. I noticed that his cranium is a bit too big, I probalby did that in hollowing his head @@ But that can be fixed easier than say, horribly misaligned eyes (which is something I had a problem with him for the longest time!) So anyway, here is Rojelio, who's just a head so far, and I hope you like him! Sorry that some pictures are blurrier than others. I'll try to take better quality pictures, but the lighting that I could use washed him out too much. Whee update, new picture . Photoshopped obviously, seeing as well, he's still sculpified and I wanted it to look sort of like he was resin. XD Augh, I already see there's a bit of a dent under his eye right there. Why do you not notice these things until the very last? Well, I hope that you like him! I'm wondering though if his face isn't too broad. On a side note, I put his head on the body that was meant for the other doll (the body in question was previously approved so I hope that it's OK to post it here D: ), because, man, making bodies is such work, I was hoping if I couldn't just let them share that body. And if I am blessed with the opportunity to cast copies, then they both can have a body of their own x3. But anyway, do you think that the head doesn't fit right? I mean, it *fits*, as in the socket fits the neck, but I wonder if it isn't out of proportion. It looks too wide, maybe, to me. What do you think? Maybe the neck is just too short. I think that's it. The body itself needs a lot of work anyway. x3 So tell me what you think, and thanks for looking!
he's really cute! I love his flat face, and his lips and nose are just lovely. I don't think his face is too broad at all. but I don't think he looks right on that body! He needs a slimmer longer neck I think, and he will look great!
Thankyou, agreed! I just didn't want the hassle of making another body @3@. But a little more work is worth a proportionate doll in the end. Edit - Alright, so since he's going to have a body of his own, what do you think'd be the best option for his torso-jointing? I *want* to be able to give him a 3 part torso but I think that'd be a bit too ambitious. (I might just try it out anyway, who knows, it might work!) So a 2 parter, but what do do you think is better? A split at mid-body ala Angel Region and Soulkids are, or the hip-split like Luts does?
Alyosha, you keep amazing me!! I love your sculpts!! Seriously, if you ever cast copies of any of your work, contact me, I am very interested! Bravo to you for deciding to make him his own body, bodies are so hard! I think a two part torso with the joint at the middle is the most poseable. I guess it depends on what are you more interested in; posability or aesthetic quality?
I agree with the slimmer neck thing, but the head is amazing! I love his wide face...too many BJDs look the same, and it's so nice to see something really unique!
i agree with the slimmer neck, i think that it is the right length though, any longer and his face will start to look out of proprtion. what a lovely face, i just want to pinch his cuddly cheeks and that slight smirk / grin makes him look like 'hmmmm, i had a really great dream' or if he was evil ' i'll wait till you're sleeping and then shave off your eyebrows '
His neck may be a bit too thick for his head to turn around, but it's really depending on the size of the neck-hole at the bottom of his head. Although it does look a bit awkward in comparison to his head. His jaw seems a bit square, but other than that he looks very nice. ^^ He looks wonderful from the side!
Thanks, all of you . I'm flattered and I really appreciate the input! Nakitama - Thankyou! I would absolutely love to cast my dolls in resin, I just gotta finish them first @3@. Gimme a few months xD. It would be a lot easier to just be able to cast heads, but finding a resin match-body'd probably be not worth it. I'm gonna go with you on the middle-split torso. Logically I want to make the body the best of both poseability and aesthetics, but I gotta figure out which sacrifices to make so I can attain that @@. I myself prefer poseability (If that Domuya flexi-body was within my price range, I'd grab that thing) but I think that if I tried to make it super-poseable, I'd open up too many opportunities for weak-spots since he's MSD sized. That and I think that a more aesthetically leaning doll just plain sells better (I'd like to be able to sell some). Stoner Kitty - Thanks! I almost wonder if his face isn't too broad? I've based this face off of a character of mine whose facial structure is generally squarish, but I still wonder if I'm not cutting it too closely. I'm working on a torso with a slimmer neck, but it's not quite finished yet so I'll get pictures later. Maggot - Thanks x3! I'll keep that and mind - And huu huu, ironically the character I'm basing this sculpt off of is a narcoleptic x3 I'm glad that he's something you can put a personality on 3. Mamo - Yeah, I have to work on the head-socket. I think I might have to run him through the oven twice, once to finalize his actual face, then twice after I've sanded and modified that area accordingly. I don't want to cut down on the jaw too much because I want to maintain a square facial structure, but I think I could afford to shave off some. Thanks Baakay - x3 Thankyou . I like cutesy babyface things ;3;
I like him.. but I think his nose is crooked.. its not bad or anything.. just trying to help you along... Seek peace Carol
Thankyou guys Really? Huh o3o. XD I guess it's because of my wanting a Chiwoo. And Rattimoth - o3o I dunno actually, I put him in front of the mirror and he passes the mirror test, I think that may be a camera angle problem. In fact the thing that fail the mirror test is his eyeholes. I'mma try and get more work done on him over the Christmas break. You know, give him ears and downsize his cranium so he doesn't have that weird head-too-big, DIM Headcap thing going on. Hopefully he'll have a good torso and arms by then. Hopefully.
Woot, bringing this back to the foreground so it can get a little bit of attention. I don't know if the changes I made to his face are terribly obvious, but I gave his eyes a little more opening and shape to the lower lids, and reshaped his cheeks a little.
Aww, he's cute! With faceup he will look adorable and his face is definitely not too wide... About the body: I agree that his neck needs thinning and I see that his chest still needs much work, but I must say that his tummy-line is absolutely beautiful. You did a perfect lower torso! Oh, and another thing: You are planning on making him ears, aren't you? I kinda miss them even with a wig...
wow he's a cutie! and he's got dreamy eyes! (loves the dreamy eyed BJDs) If you ever consider making casts (and selling one) please PM me!
so I ACTUALLY got around to sculptin gon this guy *He's been so neglected, d'awww.* Thankyou guys And I actually haven't given him ears yet. I mean, I have, but they're not detailed, because for some reason I just..I dunno. x3 But I will detail them because that'd just look pretty awkward, now wouldn't it O_o; So Roj has a different face (Same head, just more modifications). And a brand new torso which I hope is to peoples' tastes besides mine, I myself'm proud of it. It hasn't been sanded yet, but here's how it is so far. I also was working today on his arms and I got one done, and I tried to have a double jointed elbow but like that worked out x3x. Still, Split his upper arm so he can do more poses, because it's always bothered me that BJD's cant move their arms...Inward, on the upper arm, having to use their elbowjoint. Since his elbow joint wouldn't fit in on elastic when i tried to string the arm, and when I tried Leon's thinner elastic, well long story short, it was just easier in the long run to put the arm directly on Leon. Leon by the way, is a dollzone feiwong whose less than stellar appearance you'll have to forgive for now xD. He can look much better than that, I promise. Anyway though what do you think of that? I was afraid it'd make his movement look a little...Unnatural? Elbow joint is too bulky and the hollow is too thin for stringing, which makes it easier for me to ditch. What I did was try to pull like, a Petsha and do that awesome double jointed elbow schitck but failed miserably, miserably. Forearm is too short, but it will be fixed of course. Because omg that horrible elbow joint is going. XD At least I tried doublejointing? >3> And then his right hand, which would be in that rather than what was barely shown there (I had a right hand and the arm was for the left shoulder XD) but I don't have any hooks of the right size so the hand is still soft:
Hey, at least you tried the snazzy elbow jointing! :P I think his arms are looking really good! (I think that one of the bigger varieties of dolls--the model dolls, maybe?--have that upper arm thing. I never knew what it was for until now! XD; ) But he's coming along really nicely~
Thanks! And yeah xD. I never saw that joint go on, the upper one, until I saw - what was it, Kyle? - Dollmore. I got the idea originally when I saw Cocori's legs, how they jointed them and so I was wondering how it'd look for the arms. When I saw Dollmore's model boy had this upper arm slit I was like, "Whoo! let's do it too!"
WooW, that slit upper arm was a great idea!! I don't find it unnatural, not a bit! And his torso is awesome, too! I'm soo curious how he will look finished
