Hello all!

Animania Sydney is coming around again and this time, we will be hosting several exciting ABJD events for the general public and doll owners! The events will include:

1. An introductory talk to the world of Asian Ball Jointed Dolls. (Updated: 12/06/08)
2. Live face-up tutorials (Updated: 21/08/08)
3. Doll photography competition - Rules and Registration (Updated: 09/08/08)
4. Doll cosplay competition - Rules and Registration (Updated: 14/08/08)
5. NEW GUEST SPEAKER: Doll photography talk (Updated: 02/06/08)

All doll owners are welcome to bring their dolls and display them on a table for free. ^_^

The list of prizes for the competitions is now up as well!

Watch this space for further updates about these events, new ones to come and competition rules! For now, better start playing around with your cameras and getting your ideas for cosplays ready!

Loki, an experienced member of the doll community, will be giving the general public at Animania Sydney an introductory talk about Asian Ball Jointed Dolls. As this hobby is still largely unknown to the general public, this talk will prove to be rather enlightening I believe. The topics she will touch on would be of much interest to many of us doll owners as well. Don't miss out on this informative talk!

Our guest face-up artists will be Sydney's own experienced Mk13 of Moonteahouse Aesthetics and Melbourne's talented Healdria of Papi Esthetics. Learn about the different types of face-up techniques as well as tips and tricks of the trade - using pastels as well as airbrushing!!

The face-up demonstrations promise to be comprehensive and will include Q&A sessions. ^__^ I'm feeling pretty excited myself to learn from Mk13 and Healdria!

More details to come within the next few weeks!

EDIT NOTE: Mk13's face-up demonstration will now be moved up to 1PM on Sunday as Amanda Keyes will not be able to make it for the doll photography talk.

1. ANIMANIA FESTIVAL DOLL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION RULES

1.1 All contestants must read and adhere to the doll photography competition rules.

1.2 Only those attending the event are eligible to join the competition.

1.3 The theme of the photographs is 'Nature'. All submissions should relate to the theme in some way.

1.4 Contestants are allowed limited usage of photo-editing programs on submissions. While photo-editing is allowed to improve the quality of the picture (lighting, cropping, resizing, etc), this is a test of photography skill, not photo-editing skill. Over-usage of photo-editing (For example: Adding a complete new background using Photoshop) will not be allowed and Animania reserves the right to disqualify such entries.

1.5 All resin ball jointed dolls will be allowed as subjects of the photographs except for pirated or bootlegged ball jointed dolls.

1.6 Contestants are limited to three entries each but each contestant is eligible to win only one prize.

1.7 Entries will be judged based on several aspects of doll photography, including the relation to the theme of the competition, doll posing, lighting, composition, creativity, etc.

1.8 Our event is comparable to the PG-13 of movie ratings. Please ensure that the photographs of your dolls are acceptable at a public viewing that has young children among the audience.

1.9 All photographs must be of 300dpi resolution with a size of 6 inches by 8 inches, in either portrait or landscape layout.

1.10 All participants must register for the competition by 14th August 2008.

1.11 Owners should be aware that all entries will be printed out to be displayed during the Animania Festival.

1.12 Staff and Volunteers of Animania are not eligible to enter the competition.

1.13 Should any contestant refuse to comply with the rules and guidelines, the contestant will be disqualified from the competition.

1.14 Aurora Entertainment Pty Ltd (hereinafter referred to as "the Organisation") reserves the right to adjust the competition rules in any way it sees fit and disqualify any entry for non-compliance with the rules outlined in this document or the Terms and Conditions for General Public.

1.15 Permission is granted to the Organisation to use the photographs for future promotions of Animania.

1.16 The Organisation reserves the right to disqualify any entrants within reason. The Organisation's decisions are final.

1.17 By entering the competition, the participant agrees to abide by the terms and conditions as set out in this document and on the website. Participants who do not follow these rules will be disqualified.

The following is strictly prohibited:

1.18 Anything that might be against our PG-13 rating, which includes nudity and gore.

Photo Resizing​

As I have received a few questions about sizing, here's a quick explanation that might help contestants understand what we require to print your photos in good quality.

The program I'm using for resizing my photos is Adobe Photoshop. I am resizing my photo without cropping it.

Originally, my photo is 2448x3264 pixels and 13.6x18.133 inches at 180 pixels/inch. It might vary for most but the resizing should work the same.

At the Resolution field, I change it to 300 pixels/inch.

Then, under Document Size, I change the Width field to 6 inches. If Constrain Proportions has been ticked as shown above, the Height field will automatically change to 8 inches.

So your final picture will be 1800x2400 pixels and 6x8 inches at 300 pixels/inch. ^_^

If you're worried that the size might be wrong, do a test print of your picture to check the size and quality.

1. ANIMANIA FESTIVAL DOLL COSPLAY COMPETITION RULES

1.1 All contestants must read and adhere to the doll cosplay competition rules.

1.2 Only those attending the event are eligible to join the competition.

1.3 Dolls are to be cosplayed as characters from any Anime, Manga, Japanese games or as members of Japan-related pop culture (this will include J-rock, J-pop, Visual Kei, etc).

1.4 Costumes and modifications must be home-made.
For example: Bluefairy's automail Fullmetal Alchemist Edward Elric (Jerome) will not be allowed as an Edward Elric cosplay entrant to the contest but should the owner want him to cosplay as another character that does not have automail arm and leg, that will be allowed. Okita Souji complete with costume from Volks will not be allowed to cosplay as Okita from Rurouni Kenshin.

1.5 All resin ball jointed dolls will be allowed as entrants to the competition except for pirated or bootlegged ball jointed dolls.

1.6 Contestants are limited to three entries each (which means three different dolls), but each contestant is eligible to win only one prize.

1.7 Cosplays will be judged based on accuracy of the costume and looks (Eg: Wigs, eyes, scars, tattoos, etc). Extra points if the dolls are given face-ups, paintworks or modifications to match the character!

1.8 Our event is comparable to the PG-13 of movie ratings. Please ensure that your doll's costume and modification is acceptable at a public viewing that has young children among the audience.

1.9 All participants must register by August 20th. Registration must include pictures of the character being cosplayed. A confirmation of registration is required in person on the day of the event as well.

1.10 Owners must present cosplaying dolls at Animania at a set time and date. You may pose your doll in one signature pose to further convince the judge that it is a good cosplay. Doll posing is recommended, but not compulsory and doll owners have five minutes to get their dolls into the desired pose.

1.11 If you do not own a doll but wish to participate, you can as long as the owner is willing to lend you the doll for cosplay and for the day of the competition. Proof of permission along with contact details must be sent with the application as we will confirm with the respective owners.

1.12 Staff and Volunteers of Animania are not eligible to enter the competition.

1.13 Should any contestant refuse to comply with the rules and guidelines, the contestant will be disqualified from the competition.

1.14 Animania reserves the right to alter the rules and guidelines at any time.

1.15 Aurora Entertainment Pty Ltd (hereinafter referred to as “the Organisation&#8221 reserves the right to adjust the competition rules in any way it sees fit and disqualify any entry for non-compliance with the rules outlined in this document or the Terms and Conditions for General Public.

The following are strictly prohibited:

1.19 Anything that might cause injury. Authentic metal weapons (such as small knives) or incendiary materials (lighters, litted candles, etc) are not allowed to be used as props for cosplay, no matter how small they are. If you have any queries on whether your prop is acceptable or not, please contact us.

1.20 Anything that might be against our PG-13 rating, which includes nudity and gore.

I'm so sorry it took so long to get around to it but due to work-related matters and an unfortunate week-look sickness, I had to delay the updates. I'm running a bit behind now so I'll have to catch up again (though I'm still slightly unwell T_T).

Sorry about the confusion! I think I really shouldn't write up rules when I'm not 100% well. >_> Man, I must be stoned to have used that line for the doll photography rules!

Anyways, I've made the correction. Nothing about one doll in each photo now. ^__^ There's no limit to how many dolls there are in each photo. Thanks for catching the mistake early!

chizzie_shark - Perhaps there can be a group meet-up before Animania to be sure no one gets lost. Quite likely I won't be able to attend the meet-up because I'll probably have to be there early though... T_T

DevKimiko - A one day pass counts as an attendee, but you have to be sure that you'll be attending on the day of the prize-giving ceremony. If you're joining the cosplay competition, then you have to be sure to attend the day of the cosplay comp and the prize-giving day as well (depending on the schedule, might not be on the same day...still working on the schedule @_@).

But...I think most people will want to come on both days anyway...otherwise, you'll be missing out on the awesome talks/demos and the World Cosplay Summit finals! I was at the World Cosplay Prelims and it was pretty damn cool. Definitely looking forward to seeing the finals (really hope that I will have the time to do so).

This is also a bump for updates on the list of prizes for our competitions! I hope everyone has been as excited as I am about this~ I only wish I could join the competitions as well... ;_;

I would like to take a brief moment to thank Jaime, Liria, Hyla and Neo for their patience and for giving Animania and myself a chance. ^__^ We truly appreciate Jaime-doll, Fairyland, Celga and Nobilitydoll's kind support.

It's been a long month and more for me due to a bug I couldn't shake, my pet falling sick and a crazy workload at the end of the financial year. Putting up the list of prizes now, I feel like Animania's doll events are now another step closer to our intended destination! I really appreciate all the enthusiasm and support I've been getting from all of you. I need to thank Cerisey as well for all her help!

But enough blathering about me!

We will have another event so watch this place for more updates! (I've run out of reserved space though! O_O)

Also, Thavron took the initiative to start a meet-up thread for Animania. Perhaps some arrangement can be made so you guys can meet up before the event (in case anyone gets lost) or during. I would love to join you guys as well except I'll be at Animania early, slaving away. I think it would be great if we could also have a dinner together on Saturday night since we have a few others from outside Sydney coming down for Animania and we won't have that many opportunities to meet with them. ^__^ Anyone interested?

I'm arranging the scheduling at the moment. Actually, I'm duking it out with the cosplay section for more time on the stage *grins*. I'll let you guys know once the schedule is set.

I would love to organize the dinner but I hesitate to do so because I'll probably wind up staying back at Animania and cleaning up (yeah, volunteers, staff and managers...all part of the cleaning crew!). Which means I'll try to make it for dinner, but I'll probably be late and it would be bad if the organizer is late. Anyone else up to planning it?

 

Devils Conscience - YAAYYY! More interstate people! That's awesome! Don't worry, it's pretty cool to see dolls owned by other people and hey, you still can join the competitions~ Maybe you could win a doll!
