Jul 11, 2010

    1. Event: Animania Sydney
      Venue:Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh
      Date: 11th & 12th September, 2010

Are you guys ready for the doll events at the Animania Festival 2010? Because it's nearly that time of the year again!

My thoughts might revolve around the ABJD hobby, but the festival holds other exciting attractions as well, such as guest speakers from Japan, the World Cosplay Summit (not to be missed!), panels and talks related to art/anime/fanworks, Cosplay games, the gaming zone, fun times at karaoke, artist duels, martial arts and dance demonstrations, screenings...and I could go on all day!

Of course, don't miss out on the doll display table! :D As always, you are welcome to bring your dolls and leave them on display, with trusty Animania volunteers to watch over them throughout the festival.

    2. ASIAN BALL JOINTED DOLLS PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION RULES

      SUBMISSION PROCEDURES

Entries must be submitted following instructions on the Doll Photography Entry Form.

Winners of the Doll Photography Competition will be announced at the Awards Ceremony during the Sunday of Animania Festival Weekend.

      COMPETITION RULES

1.1. All contestants must read and adhere to the doll photography competition rules.

1.2. Only those attending the event are eligible to join the competition.

1.3. The theme of the competition is 'Glass'. Along with the doll/dolls, the photos must include (in some form or other) an object made of glass.

1.4. Contestants are allowed limited usage of photo-editing programs on submissions. While photo-editing is allowed to improve the quality of the picture (lighting, cropping, resizing, etc), this is a test of photography skill, not photo-editing skill. Over-usage of photo-editing (For example: Adding a complete new background using Photoshop) will not be allowed and Animania reserves the right to disqualify such entries.

1.5. All resin ball jointed dolls and Dollfie Dreams will be allowed as subjects of the photographs except for pirated or bootlegged ball jointed dolls.

1.6. Contestants are limited to three entries each but each contestant is eligible to win only one prize.

1.7. Entries will be judged based on several aspects of doll photography, including the relation to the theme of the competition, doll posing, lighting, composition, creativity, etc.

1.8. All photographs must be of 300dpi resolution with a size of 6 inches by 8 inches, in either portrait or landscape layout.

1.9. Our event is comparable to the PG-13 of movie ratings. Please ensure that the photographs of your dolls are acceptable at a public viewing that has young children among the audience.

1.10. Nudity, gore and any other offensive subject matter that does not comply with the PG-13 rating are strictly prohibited. Any photographs displaying these will be disqualified from the competition.

1.11. If you do not own a doll but wish to participate, you can as long as the owner is willing to lend you the doll to be photographed. Proof of permission along with contact details must be sent with the application as we will confirm with the respective owners.

1.12. All participants must register for the competition and submit entries by 5 September 2010.

1.13. Owners should be aware that all entries will be printed out to be displayed during the Animania Festival.

1.14. Staff and Volunteers of Animania are not eligible to enter the competition.

1.15. Aurora Entertainment Pty Ltd (hereinafter referred to as "the Organisation") reserves the right to adjust the competition rules in any way it sees fit and disqualify any entry for non-compliance with the rules outlined in this document or the Terms and Conditions for General Public.

1.16. Permission is granted to the Organisation to use the photographs for future promotions of Animania.

1.17. The Organisation reserves the right to disqualify any entrants within reason. The Organisation's decisions are final.

1.18. By entering the competition, the participant agrees to abide by the terms and conditions as set out in this document and on the website. Participants who do not follow these rules will be disqualified.

      Photo Resizing

We have received questions about the sizing in the past, so here's a quick explanation that might help contestants understand what we require to print your photos in good quality.

The program I'm using for resizing my photos is Adobe Photoshop. I am resizing my photo without cropping it.

Originally, my photo is 2448x3264 pixels and 13.6x18.133 inches at 180 pixels/inch. It might vary for most but the resizing should work the same.

At the Resolution field, I change it to 300 pixels/inch.

Then, under Document Size, I change the Width field to 6 inches. If Constrain Proportions has been ticked as shown above, the Height field will automatically change to 8 inches.

So your final picture will be 1800x2400 pixels and 6x8 inches at 300 pixels/inch. ^_^

If you're worried that the size might be wrong, do a test print of your picture to check the size and quality.

Authentic metal weapons (such as small knives) or incendiary materials (lighters, litted candles, etc) will not be allowed to be used as props for doll cosplay, no matter how small they are. If you have any queries on whether your prop is acceptable or not, please contact us.

    8. I've updated the doll events for the Animania weekend!

Soon to come will be a list of the prizes and the sponsors! :D

Meanwhile, don't miss out on the advance sales tickets at the Animania website~

    9. Aaaaaaaaaaand I've updated with our list of prizes! Thank you so much to all our awesome sponsors!!

Please don't forget the competition and advance sales deadlines!

    10. *swoons at the prizes*
Also please warn apple-pai to be patient...I'll be Ms 20-questions regarding light-boxes
*Hand Up* Misss Missss! Questions or more like clarifications

      Ummm the Masquerade competition states:
Bonus points will also be awarded to contestants who dress to match the dolls or get their friends to dress to match.

Is it alright if the person dressed to match does not have the same "figure" as their doll?
Like try to look as similar as possible without dramatic weight loss and plastic surgery... I know it's a dumb question but most dolls are pretty spectacular

Also is it alright just to appear in Masquerade for one day...or do you have to do it for both days?

    11. Don't worry, it's not too difficult! And it doesn't cost much to make either~

Correct me if I am wrong LKJ~
I am not doing the judging, but i am sure it won't matter if you have the same figure as your doll or not!! It'll probably be based on the effort that was put into the co-ordination of the person and the doll~
You are required to submit a photo of the doll in the full Masquerade attire, i am guessing it is for reference for the judges, so i am sure it'll be okay if you are dressed only for the one day.

    12. Damn wish I still lived in Sydney on days like this :(

So Pai.... hows that Fairyland addiction coming along :wiggle

    13. Apple-pai is exactly right for both questions!

If having the same shape was required, I'm not sure the human being would still be alive! (I think we transposed a Lishe's body into human size before and it's basically impossible to achieve with that same height. Plus, surgery would also be needed to make our heads waaaaaay bigger :P )

    14. *LOL* Like a Hollywood Celebrity!

      Awesome...*rubbing hands*

    15. I think it's time you came down to Sydney ;)
      Lol!
      They just keep coming!
The new cupid3 is soooo tempting! And Luna and PKF Pongpong! So adorable! But i am trying to hold back as i will be going on holidays soon so saving up for that... :( for trying not to spend but :D for holiday!

    16. Haha, an alien hollywood celebrity, what with the huge head! :P

And to everyone, don't forget that the doll photography competition deadline is on 5 Sept, which is fast approaching! And the masquerade competition deadline is 8 Sept!

    17. Gah I know...all my dolls are ready for the shoot but sunlight has abandoned us! *Shakes fist at sky* stoopid clouds, give me light

    18. Sunday is supposed to be a bright and sunny day! :D Good luck, Mechakal!

Guys, you have until the end of tomorrow (Sunday) to submit your entries! Don't forget~

    19. LOL I just sent mine in after giving up on the weather *face-palm*

      Oh well...GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!

    20. Will there be anyone selling dolls like tehre was at Smash! this year?

    21. Got your entry, Mechakal! :) Thanks for your entries!

Roselita - Unfortunately, there won't be an official doll seller there. But for a tip, during our first year, one of the owners sold her doll there. :) It happens occasionally. I think if someone was thinking of selling their doll, they will mention it there.

    22. Is there any discount when pick some dolls ?

    23. I'm a little confused. What are you referring to? There won't be any company sellers there but the occasional owner might decide to sell their doll, in a personal sale. Whether or not they give a discount will depend on the owner.

Please, guys, this isn't me saying that you should go around asking all the owners if they are selling their dolls. :sweat

Anyway, don't forget that today is the deadline for the photography competition!

    24. Reminder bump! Tomorrow is the last day for the doll masquerade submission! :D

    25. If you have not received an email from me saying that I have received your doll photography competition entry, please email me ASAP! :O At this stage, the only way you wouldn't have received an acknowledgment from me is if the entry did not come through after all.

I will be done emailing those who entered the masquerade competition by tomorrow, so watch out for that as well!

    26. I probably won't have time to be posting here tomorrow so here's a quick reminder! Our doll events are:

Doll Merchandise Show and Tell Panel
11.45-12.45 on Saturday, at Panel Room 1
At the end of this panel, there will be a 5 minute fun trivia! Fiathriel of Ningyotan has generously prepared some giveaways for those who prove they know their stuff!

A Peek into a Doll Company
2.15-2.45 on Sunday at Panel Room 1
Stick around for a little quiz and you stand a chance to win a doll wig!

      Stringing Your Doll 101
3-3.30 on Sunday at Panel Room 1

Update: Loki will be available to take photos of your doll in the lightbox from 1pm to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. I'll email the photos to you after postprocessing, after Animania!

Just remember that the lightbox is on trial this weekend as it is something new we haven't done before. :P Hopefully it will all work out fine. But in any case, I think it will be some good fun!

See you guys this weekend! Wheeeeeeeeee!

    27. Here's a really quick picture that was taken in the lightbox!

It's a little bit bright but I think this looks pretty good yaaaay~

    28. And one from me. ;) The lightbox was a lot of fun! I hope I'll get some more awesome shots tomorrow.

    29. yay today was awesome ^o^ was so nice meeting other owners <3

the panels were really interesting too :3 <333

    30. Wahh~
      The lightbox worked so well~
To think, it was cardboard and paper~
Cannot wait to see more photos~

    31. Thanks to LKJ and Apple-pai for organising the display tables, sponsors and volunteers. I had a great time meeting all the dolls and their humans, and look forward to seeing everyone's photos. Can't wait for next year!

    32. Woooooooo! Thanks for the quick upload, Loki! :D

Winners of the competitions have been updated here.

I really want to thank everyone who came! A convention is only as good as its attendees and you guys were awesome~ Thank you so much for coming to the panels and for having your dolls on display or for even just coming by to chat. <3

A special shout-out to Fiathriel of Ningyotan for her sponsorship, for bringing lots of goodies to the merch panel and for giving away the prizes at the awards ceremony.

And of course, we have to give some love to the contributors of the Animania weekend:
      - Loki who was our resident lightbox photographer and bringer of her many, many dolls and 1001 accessories!
      - Krishna who brought a lot of plants, I mean, who brought new furniture to spice up our display this year! :P
      - Mk13 who did an impressive and super-speed job of a doll-restringing demo!
      - Cerisey for her various ideas, countless assistance and level-headed ability to counter my whinging!

I still have loose ends to tie up like uploading 1million photos, emailing various people, etc. But I do want to explain now that this will be my last year organising the doll events for Animania. I might whinge a lot about how much time it takes and 'why doesn't everything ever go right whinewhine' but in the end, it has been a blast and it has been fulfilling because of all of you in the doll community. :)

Apple-pai, my most fabulous assistant coordinator of 2010, will be taking over next year and will be bringing new awesomeness to the doll events! :D

I will be at Animania as a general attendee so see you guys there or at the next meet!

    33. ^ That is so my favourite lightbox pic I've seen so far...I just love that pose as it looks like he is going to break out in song any second!

    34. Thank You for the photos Loki~
      They look awesome~
Is it possible to get some of them off you sometime?

    35. Congrats to all the winners and thanks LKJ for being supportive and chasing me at the end of Sunday to get me to the awards ceremony, I was miles away doing a mini photo shoot and my brain completely fell out. Thanks also for letting me store bits and pieces with you!

Hope everyone liked their freebies at the panel!

    36. Wheeee~ Thanks for posting the Loki! :D

And thanks Fiathriel for coming to the awards ceremony! Sorry I spammed your phone too trying to get in touch with you! >_>
