Angelsdoll Discussion PART 5

Mar 30, 2012

    1. Hey guys! =3

I'm actually brand new to this company (I haven't really seen a whole lot of their dolls about), but after seeing a few Bakus around I'm completely convinced that he's perfect for a character of mine (that nose... to DIE for!!). So I hope you guys don't mind if I putz about in here waiting for some Baku spam while I save up the funds for my own, lol!!

    2. Absolutely! No problem at all! Several of us are waiting on Baku and I'll be sure to post pictures of him when he arrives. :) Welcome and good luck saving up!

    3. Awesome!! If it wouldn't be too much trouble for anyone with a Baku willing to snap some pics (or when theirs arrives, anyhow, haha), I'd adore some good profile shots. I'm just so digging on his angular features, I totes squealed out loud when I saw him; I haven't fallen for a sculpt this hard in along time! I'm actually planning on just getting the head (as I have a Popodoll body all lined up for him that matches Volks NS perfectly), so hopefully I won't be waiting for too long! =3

    4. Hiya, Bats. :) I just got my Baku last week! He's divine. *loves* I'd be happy to take some pictures, though it might be a few days since he's in the middle of a faceup. Yes, I work entirely too slow. LOL.

    5. I saw! Your blank picture of him in your box opening photos is part of what cemented the omgWANT for me, lol! It'd be lovely to see all your pictures when he's all finished, I'll be eagerly anticipating! =3
Take your time, also, it takes me forever to really get a good faceup done too. XD

      • x 1
    6. lol, that's so awesome! Glad to be of assistance. His features really attracted me, too. The chin, the nose, the cheekbones...oh yes. I'll be sure and post some pictures when I get him done. *works busily*
Gah, yes, it takes me forever to finish! I hate making mistakes and having to re-do, so I tend to go overboard with being careful.

    7. Hi Bats and welcome into the angelsdoll discussion!I agree about the severe features of Baku,he's one of the best sculpt so far done by company,i do own one in vivid skin if you wanna see some blank piccies just ask :)

    8. Ugh. Well, I've already wiped my first faceup attempt on poor Thorsten. I really need to come to terms with the fact that I'll never, ever, ever be an artist.

Feeling so frustrated right now. :(

    9. $abbatha- Thank you! If you had some spare time I'd LOVE to see some blank pics of your Baku! I've been thinking about it all day at work, Friday (payday, woot woot!) won't come fast enough! Lol!

Mekkisry- Eeek, don't give up! I wiped my first faceup at LEAST four times before I was finally satisfied with it. Just take your time, tell yourself you have forever to finish it (because honestly, you really do), and whenever you get frustrated just leave him be for a day or so, regenerate and try again. You can do it! Everyone has to learn sometime! =3
If your having issues with a specific problem, I'd be happy to try and help, if you like. I'm not the best faceup artist in the world, but I've done a few! XD

    10. Ohh, don't be sad Mekkisry, I trust that face up will pull through!!

Hi Bats!! Just like Anderton said previously, a lot of us own a Baku sculpt or are waiting for him ^^ so there's not gonna be a lack of pics!!!

    11. I've done faceups on two of my other dolls, and wiped the first one about six times before I came up with anything that was even remotely passable. Of course, he still looks pretty awful. Poor little guy. I was actually kind of having fun working on Thorsten (blushing & such) until I got to the lower lashes, and then I totally lost it. I'm in the middle of coating him so I can start again, but I know when I finish him I'll be terrified to post pictures. I know how a lot of people feel about bad faceups, and I'm a bit terrified of getting ripped to shreds.
Anyway, thank you so much for your support. <3 I'm a MASSIVE perfectionist, and I really should know better than to do things that require talent or skill. Neither of which I have. LOL! I'll probably keep at it, but I already know that no matter what I do, he's not going to look great. I fail at life.

      Edit~
      @Jelly_bean:
I should start taking bets on how many times I'll have to wipe it, before I come up with something that doesn't look like a terrible disaster. LOL! I'm kidding. Thank you, I'll try my best. :aheartbea

    12. don't be so hard on yourself! Skill comes with practice! Just keep trying and you're sure to improve! My face ups for the first few years were absolutely terrible. I'm sure you'll improve if you keep at it! And don't worry--I don't think anyone in here will tear you to shreds for it. And I would hope that more people would understand by now that most people need to practice to get good at doing face ups.

    13. I guess that all people here are right mekkisry, don't put you down..
Andarton is rigth about,i'm sure that with practice you will emprove fastly,in any case you can decide to gather some money and sent your head to some artist, several are located in US so should be even affordable..
Bats i will post some piccies later :)

    14. Hey Bats welcome in this thread!
mekkisry don't put you down i can just suggest you to try more and more time, i'm sure that the right face-up comes shortly!
      Andarton is completely righ! :D

    15. I would love to improve, and I do try, but I also wonder if it's even worth it, you know? Doing something over and over and over and always thinking "Well, that's garbage..." is ridiculously discouraging. So many people do such amazing things with their dolls, and when I look at mine in comparison, it's pretty much laughable. BJDs are so gorgeous, and I can't stand the thought of my garbage work making them look, well, ugly. I don't know, like I said above, I'm not (and never will be) an artist. I can't draw or paint, and I think knowing at least a little something about either of those would help a bit. Anyway, I'm sorry, I'm not trying to make this thread all gloomy or anything. I just wish I was even halfway decent at doing faceups, and could make my dolls look the way I'd like them to. It seems so simple. *_*

      ...

      @$abbatha:
Yeah, I'll probably end up sending his head to someone who knows what they're doing! LOL. I might dabble a little bit more first, just to see what I come up with. If anything, it'll be good for a laugh.

      @$avage:
I agree, I definitely need to spend a lot more time working on it. I just get discouraged, I guess. It's frustrating to not do a good job, when I really want to.

      ...

Thank you for the support, everyone. :aheartbea I do apologize for sounding gloomy.

    16. Oh no, it's fine. I understand it's very discouraging. Not everyone who is good at face ups is an artist though! If you feel like you would be happier if you had someone else do their face ups that is perfectly fine too and I'm not saying that you have to keep at it. Perhaps you could commission someone else for now and then practice on the side with a spare head or something if you have one? Just a thought. I wish you luck regardless of what you decide!

    17. Hang in there Mekkisry! I'm new to face ups as well and boy did it take alot of erasing, cleaning, and patience to do even a small section of the face. Sometimes it got so frustrating when something I assumed would be easy ended up being super time consuming and messy. What I wanted to do in two steps took 5 steps or more. I looked up a lot of tutorials and checked out other face ups on flickr for inspiration which helped a bit but in the end it's practice practice practice...and most importantly...patience (at least for me).

As far as sending out the head to have it done by someone else, I am tempted to do that as well but, like you, I would like to try a few more face ups before I do so...and possibly save myself some $ if I can manage to do something I'm satisfied with.

So don't be so hard on yourself!:)

    18. Again i think that Andarton is givin to you a great tip!I mean that i've commissioned recently a complex face up,not even in ages i would be able to paint such thing, but in the meantime i still wannna try to make some face up on my own.

    19. @andarton:
You know, a practice head really is a good idea! I've considered getting one, and I probably should. I really do enjoy certain aspects of faceups (blushing/contouring), but other stuff (eyebrows, lower lashes) absolutely drives me up the wall. :XD: Of course, I think eyebrows and such are really tricky for a lot of people, so I'm definitely not alone in that. Thank goodness for templates, in any event. LOL. Oh, and thank you! <3

      @Mochi6:
I feel you!! I, too, have looked at a lot of tutorials and pictures, and I totally underestimated how difficult some things are, to actually do. One of my major issues is keeping the darker color pastels from looking gritty/streaky. I have several different brands (Unison, Sennelier, Rembrandt), and they all seem to do it. The one I've fought with the most is a dark brown Unison, and that was the most expensive darker shade I have. Needless to say, I use it really sparingly.

Yes, exactly, I really do want to be able to do them myself. As I mentioned above, I do enjoy blushing quite a lot. If I can somehow manage to get better at eyebrows and such, I would be SUPER happy. Here's to hoping that we get the hang of this! Though, I really think you did a lovely job on your Ivan. :aheartbea

      @$abbatha:
Yeah, I'm the same way! Anything complicated, I definitely can't do. There are really some amazing artists out there, and sometimes I enjoy looking through their commission threads in the MP. It's inspiring. :)

    20. Mekkisry Everyone here will only ever support you in all that you do in regards to your doll here at DOA. The important part is that you're having fun during the process!

Now if only I could stop being lazy and give my dolls some paint.

Actually I should try to get some pictures of Shakan posing. *is lazy*

    21. Aww Mekkisry, I echo how you feel about getting discouraged, seeing how beautiful some dolls are. But even those people who are able to do such wonderful things started out with zero knowledge. Hang in there, and just know people here on DoA will always be supportive ^^ And yes, get a practice head! I'm thinking I should be getting one too ^^

I'm still waiting to pay a deposit for my Dan and Ruby. AD didn't email me an order number/confirmation so they said they'd send a Paypal invoice along with all the details. Though I've been rethinking Ruby in pink white... I need to hunt down that resin comparison pictures I saw before!

    22. Dont be so hard on yourself Mekkisry . I tried to do faceup 5 times on on my MSD boy. After last attempt I cleaned his head and send him to faceup artist :-D Maybe it has something to do, that I dont have proper coating. And all sprays are too glossy. Even they should be matte. No MSC in Ireland. Grr. But I made faceup on my Hujoo Berry and its acceptable :-) Maybe I m useles with resin. :-)

    23. Jlostein usually angelsdoll doesn't sent any invoice, you need to send the money to the company paypal account directly, just place in the not your order reference number and then post a message in their Q&A board,at least i did in this way and it works.
Again i think that all you people are right, and also to me seems funny to try some faceup :)

    24. Does anyone know what "before shipping" meaning in a order status? Its probably been only 3 weeks so I'm sure its not finished, but I was curious and thought I would check the status.

    25. Hi Kitty Blue, my order is 'before shipping' too, so I guess they're preparing it...

I have a question guys!!! Baku owners!!! Please, what is the wig size you have for Baku? 8"-9" or 9"-10"??
      Thanks!!

    26. I've been steadily working on Thorsten's faceup, and I just took a couple of progress pictures. He's nowhere near finished (I haven't even started the eyebrows), and I'm still trying to get the lower lashes to look symmetrical/natural.

      Picture 1, Picture 2

...Am I butchering him? Does he look ridiculous? Watercolor pencils are a pain in the butt. They end up looking kind of grainy, so I've been using a tiny wet brush to feather the lines. It's kind of cool, since the water picks up the color and you can do little stroke lines (I think you can see it in the corners? Pictures are bad, I admit). Of course, my hands are shaky, and I'm not sure if it just looks too much like a smear. Gah. I'm going to keep working on it, for sure. Also, yes, I'm still working on building up the color on his lips. It looks darker in person, since the sunlight (I was standing under the skylight in my kitchen, LOL) washes it out. You can barely see the blushing I've done on his face. :doh

Siiiigh. He really is a beautiful sculpt. Absolutely adore him. <3

    27. Thanks $abbatha ^^

Good to know Mekkisry, thanks for the info. ('cause Baku is 9", so it was tricky to me to know wich one)
and btw, I loooove the face up!!! Specially the eyelashes!! (how do you do that?!!!) they look so real!!
      Ohhgrh I want Baku nooooow!!!!

    28. I'm still at "before shipping" too. It's driving me nuts. I check my status like twice a day. I never order directly from the company. It's either second hand or Junky Spot so this "long" wait is a new experience.

    29. I think his face is coming along great, Mekkisry.! Definitely not butchering him :D

    30. Thank you so much, everyone!! :aheartbea It's lovely to know that I'm on the right track. I'm nervous about the eyebrows, but hopefully I can pull it off. Crossing my fingers, in any event. LOL.

      @Kideme:
Thanks for that tip! That'll be useful, for sure. :)

    31. This! ^^^

It looks fantastic so far! Very subtle and natural looking. I hope I can do so well when I try to give Shakan a face!

    32. SPLEEEE! Baku pics!! Great job, Mekkisry!! I love the lashes! More spam, please! =3

Hopefully I'll be able to afford to put my order in for mine tomorrow- crossing my fingers! I'm getting way too excited, lol.

    33. Here a pic of Baku blank in vivid skin tone:

    34. @northern_raven:
Thank you so much! Natural is exactly what I'm going for. :aheartbea Ooooh, can't wait to see your Shakan, when you finish him! He's such a manly, strong-looking fellow. I adore his jaw/chin. Oh yes.

      @Bats:
Eeee, thank you! I'm really hoping to have him done soon, so I can spam tons of pictures. :kitty2
Yay for ordering soon!! I'm super excited for you! *flails and squeals* <3

      @edwardsgoldeneyes:
Thank you~! :) I've gotta say, I'm actually fairly happy with how he's turning out. Still nervous about the eyebrows, but I shall try my best!

      ...

OH MY GOSH! Sorcha is absolutely amazing, $abbatha!! I love her! Very striking, and almost haunting, in a way. So gorgeous. :D I would love to see more pics of her!

    35. wow!! what a really interesring story behind Sorcha, $abbatha 'the undead nurse'!! Silent Hill is great movie! (My brother had the ps3 game and it was scaaaary!!)
$avage I loooved Vida's makeup! the colors around the eyes are magnificent!!

    36. Ohhhh, love the colors on Vida's faceup~! So many pretty dollies in this thread, all the amazing spaaaaam....

Also~ I bought the head! Woohoo! Hyang is a go! I'm still researching for her name, but I made a character design for her already, haha. Now to go shopping!
I hope I'm allowed to leave this here, but here's a quick sketch for her I did for the time being if anyones interested in lame stuff like that, haha. It's not... REALLY work safe. Nothing bad, but. Partial nudity, kinda. But not really. Just being safe. XD
      Here's the sketch!

    37. Thanks for liking so much Sorcha's character!I do not even imagined that were so much fan of horror and Silent Hill here :D
I'm looking for a nice fetish nurse outfit, but i think that in the end i will commission one, more easy!
Thanks for the link Northern-Raven :)
I've spotted Sorcha as well and seems that the lace teddy stained her a bit,i removed the few stains with some surgical alchool.
Bats super congrats!!!Even from sketch she seems very very interesting!!!

Regarding the V2 male body problem ( popping out abs) imo the problem is that the angelsdoll tends to strung too tight the male dolls, the strings are very short :sweat maybe using some longer strings could solve the issue, with the V1 i never had any problem with the upper thighs joints and the legs has also a useful lock system..

    38. northern_raven- Hoho, I love the little fig leaf there. Tasteful! Great body pics too, I'm becoming increasingly more interested in the massive body. If only one of my characters had that amazing physique! Looks like he can hold some amazing poses too, well done!

Thanks for the excited feels, guys! The seller already shipped her and- gasp!- she showed up today! Though, I'm must say I'm flip flopping on the gender issue. All I have are boys atm (I just like them more, sadly), so I put the head on a spare body (waiting for his mod, haha). He looks ADORABLE as a boy. XD Dunno yet, I'll have to think about bodies, now.

Anyway, have a picture! Sorry about the "artsy"(aka terrible) lighting, I'll try to take more pictures in the daylight. I'm still researching names, so I'll have to give him/her a unisex one, lol. Anyway, my Hyang! It still has the default faceup that... I'm not in love with. It's damaged, and the pink blushing is EVERYWHERE. It's most distracting on the chin, I keep thinking it's a goatee or something, haha. It doesn't seem to show up in pictures, but it still needs to go, fer sure. Working on new eyes and hair, too...

    39. I think the lighting looks lovely! When I try to take dramatic lighting shots it always comes out super grainy and blurry. So you get a thumbs up for managing to have a clear image that way! :) Your Hyang is lovely no matter which gender you go with :D

    40. There were a couple requests in the waiting room for photos of my newly arrived Baku, so I'm posting one here since that seems like a more appropriate place for it.

    41. Ohhhhh!! *melts* He's fantastic, andarton! He looks so serious... my boy is gonna have a nose scar, too! I looove your boy....

    42. Congrats, Jelly_bean! I'm going to go check him out.

    43. Mumble..:huh?:i've placed on my massive body the supergem female special hands, longer nails, seems to fits nicely..so i guess that soom jointed hands or dikadoll jointed hands could fits fine..
Sorcha ,She's here!!! di $abbatha, su Flickr

    44. Fingers crossed Max ships this week. I'm checking everyday for a status change. I finally got him a wig. Perfect color and a nice price. Perfect for Max, I hope.

    45. Me too. I'm guessing 'cause I ordered the vivid skin tone he's taking longer to make. Or something. I think I'm having a harder time waiting because I like this character so much even if he is kind of jerk.

    46. fingers crossed for you I'm still awaiting my tan boy doll and girl head its been a month but seems like forever. last look it still says before shipping...drat.

    47. Finally, Thorsten's faceup is done. Yeah, it only took me a MONTH to get it right. Eyebrows are officially the bane of my existence. *_*

      Close-up here~

It's nowhere near perfect, but I'm fairly happy with how he turned out. Have I mentioned that his character is Swedish? I suppose the name kind of gives it away, if you're familiar with that sort of thing. lol.

On a side note, I really love those eyes. They're Safrin acrylics in "Powder". Perfect. :)

    48. I like his soft and natural face up. Great job! The eye color is pretty, too. I have a few of Safrin's acrylics and I think they are pretty nice...the colors are vivid. :)

    49. :D My doll will be here tomorrow (hopefully)!

I just got the shipping notice. He left Korea yesterday and now he's hanging around JFK airport. Should be nice pick me up since I'm not feeling 100%.

    50. Well congrats dear :D
      Hey are you okey? :(

    51. Congrats on the shipping notice, imnotscared. I hope you feel better soon :(.

Mekkisry- Thorsten looks great. He definitely has the look of a Swede too. I always say that eyebrows are my arch nemesis... get it? Eh? Eh? Okay, I'll stop with the bad puns, but I think you did a lovely job.

    52. Thanks for a the concern. I rarely get sick but when I do man does it knock me out. :)

Max got here about 9am this morning along with his new wig. Such timing. I don't have any box opening pictures my camera is in need of repair so I can only post one cruddy phone pic.

He is a lovely doll. The vivid skin is beautiful, such a lovely warm color. All of the clothes I have for him fit pretty well though he his currently sitting next to me on the desk in his underwear. Didn't want to leave the Dollzone pants on him. Dollzone clothes have a tendency to stain. Plus it lets me play around with posing.

Now all he needs is a face-up and proper eyes. I didn't realize AD dolls aren't sent with eyes. He's currently wearing a pair of too large green acrylics. I'm guessing 14 or 12mm would work best right?

    53. Guys, I needs a little AD girl cheer-up spam. I boxed up my Ruby for trade finally. I know she's going somewhere she'll be appreciated, and I know she had no home in my collection, but still... She's the most beautiful thing I've ever painted, and I'm sad to see her leave me. :(

As for eyes... Ruby was wearing CiG 14mm with a 12mm iris, and the iris still seemed a little big. I'm thinking for her maybe 12mm eyes like Dollshe that tend to run just a little smaller would be ideal. Or CIG 12mm with 10mm iris. I think just 10mm would be gappy for her though. And I wouldn't get anything too high dome, since they have VERY shallow eyewells.

I'm loving seeing these boys too! :D imnotscared is your boy really Vivid skin? He looks more grey in the pic.

    54. Congrats Imnot scared he is gorgeous, those hands are gorgeous too! I actually came home to a missed deliver slip and was thinking no it couldn't be my dolls...but as I look at my order on the site it says shipping completed! Wow I'm sooo excited I can't wait to get to the post office..at least I hope its my doll and not the replacement parts from the other company. Although phooey I won't be able to post them here :( I guess people can look me up on facebook if they want to see the photos same name as here on DOA.

    55. Ohh Miss Pygmalion, it must be really hard to let her go but, as you said, maybe is the best for Ruby... sometimes right decisions are tough hon... :( Imagine she'll be well cared there.

Hey Kitty, is exciting right?? Waiting is not very nice... but just be patient!! (btw, northern raven is right... there are many 'kitty blue' on facebook, wich one are you??)

    56. Safrin eyes are awesome! I still need to get some eyes for a few other dolls so may order some for my new dolls.

oops...lol...didn't realize there were that many Kitty Blue's. Anyway here is my youtube box opening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Te93dAMyfg&feature=g-upl The tan skin is absolutely gorgeous...a few things I don't like about the joints but he is pretty solid and just WOW!
