I made an order for Angell-Studio Lan Ling at Mint On Card (MOC) on Feb. 2, 2017, for a long layaway (5 months). The good thing is that I didn't have to wait for the doll to be produced after paying off! MOC notified me that he had arrived a few weeks before my last payment--so he was shipped to me right after. I ordered Lan Ling in the Normal Pink skin (his official photos are all Butter). And I ordered Faceup and the fullset--outfit, wig, shoes. No mask, though. He was shipped FedEx ground, so it took about a week... The shipper was pretty bashed, but no holes or big dents. You can see a bit of crunch to the doll box at the right end here, and the order receipt from MOC-- Under the box lid, the shoes, wig, clothes, extra face-protector and eyes-- Under that was a satin pillow-bag with embroidered company logo, nice handles (I like that useful addition!), and zipper that went all around-- Inside was the doll, held down by velcro straps, wrapped in clear plastic bag over his entire body and head, with tubes of bubble-wrap on his legs and arms-- face-protector and light wrapping on head-- Finally free of wrapping... the limbs held position pretty well... slight kicky arms-- Face-plate style... pretty nice fit, easy to get off... might fall off if knocked, but otherwise the magnets seem to hold it on OK-- Angell-Studio listed his eyes as 16mm, but I prefer smaller eye sizes. I had already bought a pair of Oscar Eyes on the DoA Marketplace that were a dark blue-green, which I knew would be perfect! He's not a highly realistic style doll, so the Oscar eyes would work. I just love their sparkles!!!! I lightly blushed his nipples (even though he'll probably never be without his outfit). I also lightly blushed his hands, but you really can't tell... I just thought I'd do it while I had the pastels and MSC out... I took all this clothing out of the bags-- So... the shirt was easy enough to get on. I wasn't quite sure how to dress him! I had to go study the company photos, and still wasn't sure! (Sometimes I wish people included instructions and diagrams!)-- Shirt on (snaps shut), so now long skirt-thing... has ties to hold it on--nice and long so I can double it around and tie it on-- --TO BE CONTINUED--
CONTINUED--- Outer robe is lovely, with a cool green lining-- Robe fits perfectly on shoulders. Belt is closed by hooks in the back-- Long fabric strips with silver trimming and findings ties in back-- Cloth boots, zipper in back, pink/red soles... I should put some socks on his feet to protect them, but am too lazy to go find some-- Wig... a little less like the company photos, but I expected that since it looks more like the photos of the wig sold separately. Needs styling to look a bit more like the company doll photos... which has more of a widow's peak. I might not need that look so much, anyway... (although it IS more like the historical movie styles!)-- Wig on-- Breast-plate thing ties around neck-- I wasn't quite sure how to fasten the material of the cape since it just had two hooks and no eye... but it's under the breast-plate, so probably doesn't matter. The pauldron-like pieces have two hooks in the front that are meant to fasten to the breast-plate, but I'm not sure exactly where... I just stuck them on where I could-- I'm loosing the light a bit... I'll need to take some better photos later-- Sorry for all the date stamps, but I try and have them on Box Opening photos in case I need photo-proof of what I received. This one doesn't have a stamp-- Slicked back the hair a little-- I need to figure out a good name for him... I like Lan (blue) as a family name, but am trying to think of something else for a given name... But Lan Ling is such a cool name... I might keep it, although I don't usually like to use sculpt names without at least a little change... Lan Ling is a famous prince/king/leader... I'm thinking my guy will be more of a sorcerer... THANKS FOR LOOKING!
Very cool! And handsome! Angell-Studio outfits are always so ornate and gorgeous. You seem to have done well, even wothout detailed instructions. Congrats! Happy arrival day!!
Holy frick, that outfit is amazing! It looks like it fits perfectly. Congratulations, he looks great! I'm excited to see more of him when you get the chance~
I'm kind of terrible... I was totally influenced by his outfit when buying him! I just loved the colors and style, and the metal findings they used. This is my first outfit and doll from Angell-Studio, and I have to say that I'm impressed by the quality. The outfit is very nicely made, with lots of detail. And the doll looks and feels like very good quality, too.
That's fantastic! I just took a look at Angell-Studio's clothes and I really like some of their sets, especially the kimono-esque ones. I may have to jump on one in the future after seeing your lovely guy!
Ha-ha! Happy to enable you! If you need to see any details of the pieces, feel free to ask! (although I think I photo-spammed a lot already!).
Wow, an Angell Studio Lan Ling! @v@ Congratulations! I was very impressed with the photos of his fullset outfit (and Angell Studio's oriental fullsets in general). I had hoped they'd be selling the armor-esque parts separately; not that it would fit my bulky boy to begin with, haha. If I recall correctly the general/prince Lan Ling was supposedly one of the most handsome guys in Chinese history. XD
The armor is made up of some metallic jewelry findings and some kind of fake leather/fabric... They were just very clever in putting it all together... and getting the right materials, of course. The thing is, actually FINDING those materials...! I'm sure some clever people could hunt them down, but I don't have the patience... anyway, it's probably possible to make something similar for the big boys... (I probably couldn't find or make anything like that, though, so my big boys are also out of luck!) Yes-- Lan Ling was supposed to be one of the Four Most Handsome men in ancient China. (I wonder who the others were???)
Oh you tell me; you gotta be creative with search queries on Etsy alone just to turn up results that are close to what you're thinking of. XD YouTube has been helpful with regards to the Four Most Handsome Men, and I've linked it below for everyone's viewing pleasure. I believe some of them have already been made into sculpts before, just not sure who and what company.
That was hilarious!!! I think I've seen videos by them before (I'm also taking a Mandarin class, so it was fun to see the characters and the sayings). Thanks for finding that! I'd never heard of those other guys, and not heard of Lan Ling before googling after I ordered him! Light was a bit bad, so I've got some fuzzy photos, there... Elaborate asian outfits have been around bjds forever... but I haven't really been much into that before this guy came along! I think I love the subdued, but gem-toned, style and color. Thank you!
Congratulations @april ! I love that face-- he certainly lives up to his reputation. Also, hilarious video!
He was definitely a cool personage to name a doll after! I really don't know enough about Chinese tales... Now I'm curious about all their other doll names. That video really was funny to watch!
As far as I've seen, Angell-Studio already has completed the Most Beautiful Women in Chinese history, namely Xi Shi, Diao Chan, Wang Zhaojun (Wang Chiang) and Yang Gueifei (Yang YuHuan). If they also went and attempted to complete the Most Handsome Men, it would be a thing to see!
I'm terrible at remembering Chinese names... it took me a while to remember Lan Ling, and that one is easy! So I didn't recognize the sculpt names AS was using for the girls. That is so cool that it's a kind of series they are doing--and completed--for the 4 most beautiful women. I'm guessing that doing the 4 most handsome men is very likely! Thanks for the information. That is fantastic to know!
Thanks! AS makes some pretty/handsome dolls. And gorgeous outfits! They've been catching my eye for a while, but I never ordered from them before now...
Congrats on his arrival!! He looks absolutely amazing! I ended up getting that same outfit for my AS Qingyi and it was... interesting to get on. I too wish angell studio had included instructions. It looks amazing when on, but it took me over and hour to figure it out and to wrestle him in it. ^^;
There aren't that many pieces and it's not that complex... BUT, it's not easy to see from the photos what pieces go where, and how they attach. So yeah, some instructions would be great! I mostly could figure it out--but still don't know how the cloak attaches, since it has two hooks, and not a hook and eye...! Maybe it goes onto the breast-plate thing? I couldn't see how it would attach, though...! But it's still a fantastic outfit! The colors are so elegant. And the metal parts are a nice accent. I'm sure it looks great on you Qinyi.
I'm always want to see owner pictures as I like him a lot! Thanks for sharing your photo, he's such a handsome guy.
I love seeing owner-photos, too. It is not easy to get a good idea of a doll just from the company photos (although I usually have to trust in that!). It's fun to see what people do with their dolls. I tend to try and keep very close to the company vision, which is a bit boring... but at least it makes a good comparison-- to see how well he matches the official photos. I will need to see if his wig can look more like the photos... but I have been bad and haven't had time to really play with him. he's still just standing on my couch where I left him!
That wig though! I love the wig but seems like it not easy to make it look like the way it looks on company promo pictures. I would love to see something like a tutorial how to style the wig from AS.
It's too dark here to take photos, but I did play about with the wig a very little bit... I had some Volks Wig Wax... I just used a very little bit to smooth some of the hair back. Strangely--the hair was cut short so that it could barely be tied back. I had a tiny hair-clip that could just catch some of the ends (if the hair was longer, I'd have tried tying it back). It's not exactly like the photos, but it's a bit sleeker look than the unstyled wig...
Congratz! I've been lusting after Lan Ling myself and its wonderful to see a full set box opening. I hope you enjoy him!
!! I didn't realize they'd done that. I read the Song of Everlasting Sorrow in college, and it's really cool to see Yang Gueifei popping up in the BJD world. The notes about the wig are interesting. I realized that his faceup would likely not look as stunning as his official pics, but the wig looking different was a bit of a surprise.
I wasn't too surprised. Many companies will say things like "wig not styled" or something like that. Plus--this wig is sold separately and it's not styled exactly the same in those photos. And--even if styled, getting packed and shipped and unpacked can mess things up... I have to say that the wig was somewhat styled the same as in the photos (you never see in the photos what the back of the wig is like... so maybe it isn't tied back and the wig just is kind of styled to look that way...and just is a bit mushed about so it's looser than it looks in the pictures...???). The front part of the wig looks similar to the photos--the widow's peak not as prominent, but more like the wig pictures. I'm not complaining, really... just pointing out that the wig isn't quite styled in the same way... or at least needs a little attention! I used a tiny hairclip (only thing I had lying about at hand), and some Volks wig wax... Still a bit messy... I probably still need to fiddle with it!
Heh. Box Openings are full of Enabling! (or not... maybe some people see something they aren't so sure about! --However, I know they get me in trouble all the time!)
Ahhhh! Lan Ling! My favorite historical Chinese figure, mostly due to a drama I really like (though the doll Lan Ling is waaaaay more attractive than the actor fufufu). This box opening came at just the right time, because I'd just about decided that getting Lan Ling didn't exactly fit into my doll plans and I reluctantly gave up on getting him...and now I can feel happy about my decision because I got to live it vicariously through your super detailed box opening, yay! I felt like I was suffering along with you trying to figure out his outfit...haha, I love those hanfu clothes but they are just so impossible to put on! Including better instructions, companies, plz! Congrats on the beautiful boy and please do post many more pictures!
WOW! He is GORGEOUS, and styled so beautifully! His wig and outfit are perfection - congrats on a perfect new doll!
Congrats!!! I was curious about Lan Ling because I have a Qingyi...and they look similar. Lan Ling looks more manly of course. he's gorgeous!
Wow! April, he's absolutely gorgeous!!! Everything about him is awesome! I love his face-up, his outfit, and his wig is so cool! Congrats on getting him!
