ENTRY #1

I wanted to paint a fallen angel, like Lucifer for example, who was banished from the Heaven. Because of it, I wanted to give him a sad face, a feeling on loneliness (that's why I used purple around his eyes). Nevertheless, he just fell from the Heaven, so he's still an angel, with purity inside him (it justify the white for eyelashes, eyebrows, and his lower lip).

The doll is a Volks Chris, and I used Rembrandt pastels (plus a bit of Panpastel), Liquitex soft body acrylics and Tamiya gloss. My main inspiration was religious icons, but for the faceup itself I went for a stereotypical cherub look- sweet and innocent with rosy cheeks.

ENTRY #3

When I saw there was a face up contest with the theme 'angelic' I immediatley thought of my sleeping Ante faceplate. Ante's look very innocent and angelic, even without a face up.

So I started face upping randomly, and added things that reminded me of angels..stars..the colors white and blue..snowflakes. And that ended up in this face up! :3

ENTRY #4

I think of angels as pale, ethereal, otherworldy beings. Probably with a slight haughtiness or aloofness to them. Maybe a little introspection that could be interpreted as a slight sadness. I think that AIL's Bertram was perfect for it because I tend to think of angels as having exaggerated, chubby features--like an old greco-roman statue.
I used Zoukeimura finishing spray, chalk pastels from several companies, Tamiya gloss, and acrylic paints from various companies.

ENTRY #5

This angel's faceup is based mainly off of classical paintings, in particular the works of William-Adolphe Bouguereau who painted in a realistic classical style. I wanted to mimic the colors and shading of the paintings, but also to maintain a whispy, feathery look that I think of when I picture a creature as divine as an angel: glowing colors, blurred lines, soft edges - with a matte treatment as opposed to gloss to further emphasize ethereal radiance, so to speak.

The inspiration for my angelic face-up comes from my view of ‘guardian angels’. Although I’m not a religious person I have always felt that my grandmothers, who I lost as a child, have always watched out for me as my guardian angels.
I used a Fairyland Pukifee sleeping Zoe faceplate, which I have modded to have half-open eyes. This involved using a tiny drill to make the eye holes, and then bevelling eye sockets into the inside of the head. I wanted my angel to have half-open eyes because I see my guardian angels as being at peace, and are therefore not wide-awake, and yet they need to have their eyes open a little bit in order to be able to look out for me!! (I decided to keep the fairy ears, as guardian angels belong in the magical world!)
I have then used pastels and watercolour pencils to do a very soft and subtle face-up. I used small paintbrushes to apply the pastels and simply sharpened the watercolour pencils so that I got a nice sharp point to create very tiny lower eyelashes. I have tried to create an innocent, peaceful and contented face, which is exactly how I would like to think of my guardian angels as being. I used a gloss varnish to add a bit of ‘life’ to her lips and eyes, and I then attached her brown eyelashes.
The overall look is very child-like, as I like the idea of my guardian angel being playful and innocent.
(I have included pictures of her in my husband’s hand to show her scale, as she is a very tiny doll.)

Angels in my eye are peaceful so I went for a simple design, I made the eyelashes a bit wing like. I Used a star because the life in the sky. A heart because they stand for love and the bleu colour is in my eye the perfect colour for a perfect sky and angel’s in my eye shoot be perfect peaceful creators.

ENTRY #10

I stuck with my first instinct: The concept is "Lucifer" - in a version as the sad, proud, defiant one who was once the favorite and most beautiful angel. That story has always fascinated me, and I prefer the versions of the judeo-christian angels that have free will. I tried to express his duplicity, to see him somewhere in between Good and Evil, as someone struggling with their identity but too proud to turn back.

One side of his face is pretty and somewhat brighter, though haughty - lots of pinks, purples, silver, white.

The other eye is very dark and angled, black and gold, and there are some black "vines" on that side of his face (signifying the 'growth of darkness'). Also, that side of his face has the Hebrew word for "tainted" written on it inside the tattoo.

I debated whether to make the "dark" eye his right eye or his left eye - logically/mythologically (?) I suppose it should be his left, but I decided to go with "the viewer's left". I feel that in some subjective way, if the dark faceup tugs the eye in the left direction, the point is made more in connection to the person looking at him. That is my subjective impression anyway.

And there is shimmer... faaaabuloussss shimmer everywhere because I just identify shimmer with angels. *shrugs*

ENTRY #11

The fallen angels notion, come from the first part of the Book of Enoch. Those writing have been rejected by most of the Churchs. From the book, the fall of the angels is because of their desire to procreate.
They made the oath to their superior to fulfill their wish (chapter 6). They were a total of twenty leaders and behind them, following them, two thousand angels.
The women getting pregnant gave birth to Giants who devoured everything on earth. The angels taught to those women, witchcraft, magic, botanical, the use of drugs, making of weapons, knives, astronomy, astrology... (chapter 7 and 8).

Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael, saw was what happening on earth and asked what they had to do to solve this to their Lord and Master. (chapter 9)

Hermoni is one of them, he taught witchcraft, magic, the art to resolve spell and exorcism to those women.

I took inspiration from him and give to the head my face up, how I imagine Hermoni as fallen angel after what happened to him on earth and what he did.

On his left cheek there is a letter from the Theban alphabet, used by Witches and Angels, the letter ‘H’ is engraved to his skin, for him to never forget who is he. Who he was before to be soiled by the contact of women. He will never be able to disown his past as angel and what happened to him.

On his right cheek, you can find four pentacle, magic symbol. The tip up, symbol of the Man. That’s the most powerful protection symbol used for ritual. Used to symbolize ourself towards the Force we invoke or evoke.
That’s the five extremities of the human body and also the quintessence, the fifth mystical element.

When I was researching angels I read many times of them being described as 'celestial beings', which is also a term used to describe astronomical objects. So I was inspired to paint an angel as a being adorned with stars (eg the stars painted around the eyes, the sparkles on the face, and the small clusters on the eyelashes) and also using a night-sky/outer space colour palette.

Inspiration...My husband is an elementary school teacher, a Kindergarten teacher to be exact. Last year on of his students passed away after being involved in a traffic accident. She was five years old. I made this little one in her memory. The scar on her head is turning into an angel feather.
Sculpt...This is a White Skin Ante Puki Multihead from Fairyland in Korea. Her childish face was perfect for this project. Many of Fairyland's smaller dolls look too happy in my opinion. Ante has been a tremendous leap in sculpting a face that seems to truly emote. One moment she's happy, the next melancholy and wistful.

I wanted to do something that was angelic but also subtle. I used the Christian idea of an angel as my basis. Typically divinities in the religion are thought of as simple beings so I wanted to express this without being too plain. I also wanted a bit of elegance to emphasize that it is in fact a higher being. I chose to use blue around the face, like in the eyebrows a bit and around the eyes to match the color scheme of Den of Angels, seeing as I consider this face not only an angelic representation but also a representation of Den of Angels itself.

Well, I didn't really have an inspiration like an image or movie or something. I just thought about the the word 'angelic'. About what it meant to me, about the feeling and atmosphere it would bring up to me.
It made me think about a calm, glittery face, with a serene expression. And from that point I just started to work I guess *^^*
The doll head I used was a bit of a challenge. I've face-upped her twice before, but always thought she was way too bitchy (even witchy) to my likings. So when I had to decide what head to use for this contest, I thought it would be nice to try it out on her. Because I also think she should be able to look calm and peaceful. Even though her features are a bit strong.

She now as a soft face-up with a curly white tattoo on her cheek and combined blue and white eyelashes. Her make-up is very soft pink and blue. Because her resin skintone is quite light, it matched really nice.

Inspiration: I wanted to do something different than the traditional Judeo-Christian ideas, so I was inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons Arcanis campaign, in which there are Valinor, or arch-angels of each of the gods, sent to earth to create a pale grey eyed race called the Val, or half-angels, that are there to protect the humans. I chose the Valinor of Sarish, the god of magic, whose style is based on Indian and Hindu art and society. Therefore, his face and hands both are inspired by artwork of Hindu angels, or Angiris.

One thing that is essential for understanding this faceup is the symbol of Sarish, which many of his followers (including the Valinor/archangel) paint on their forehead.

My inspiration for this faceup was a modern take on Michael, The Sword of God, a warrior angel. The lovely boy modeling it is a BW Dollshe Impressive Hound. Materials I used included a tizzy of chalk pastels of various brands, standard artist's watercolors, Loew metallic watercolor paints, PearlEx pH neutral metallic powders, Mr. Super Clear, and both matte and gloss clear acrylic paint. Piercings were modified jewelry findings and attached with Aleene's Tacky glue.

I wanted her to be simple really. A warm glow to her and a benevolent looking face. A classic and traditional looking angelic figure. I went a little overboard with the mica powder, but it really gives her a "glow" in person! She also has slight gold accents in her eyeshadow.
