And Then Plans Changed...

Mar 13, 2012

    1. I hear a lot of stories about people planning for dolls way before they get the money to order them. Many people end up following through with their doll purchase, but I wonder: is there anyone who's ended up changing plans - as in saving for one doll for a few months, and then finding another doll you are compelled to buy instead, and do?

I almost had this happen with my second doll. I had gotten the idea to get my doll a brother early on last year; however, I had gotten very interested in a topic in history, and wanted to create a different doll to match it. I was so compelled that I had, for a time, decided that I was going to get this doll instead of the doll I first wanted.

I ended up going back to my original doll because no matter what happened - if I went with this new doll or not - my original doll idea would still have to happen. If my second idea was strong enough to withstand the test of time, so be it, but if not (and it didn't), then I wouldn't have spent my money on something I didn't want anymore.

So, has anyone ever gone through with it; saving for one doll and then suddenly deciding to buy another instead?

    2. Well, yes. I just found out today that one of the dolls I planned on buying was a limited (which was NOT made clear on the websites...grrrrr) so I have to change that. Plus I've already added a character just because a new doll was awesome...
I do have my characters pretty well planned, w/only a little wiggle room. Plus I've a buying chart (I really try to be organized) showing when I'm ordering dolls & how I'm budgeting for them. But it's definitely subject to tweaking LOL

    3. I was in the middle of saving for a Crobidoll Jun when i simultaneously got paid for house sitting and a Soom Lami head came up on the marketplace... I bought the Lami head because I knew I might not get the chance to buy one for a long time otherwise! I will get the Jun eventually...once my Lami has a body!

Also my first doll was a 'change of plans' doll. I was saving for an off topic doll, but then fell really hard for Resinsouls Feng and abruptly changed all my saving plans...and I've never looked back!

    4. No. It's rarely so that I fall in love with a doll, so I always stayed with my decision for that one certain doll. :)

    5. This happened to me on my first doll.
I planned on buying Angell Studio's Lucifer. Someone was selling him on a local forum but she sold it off to a person that could pay first. So, I just continued saving. Then~ I saw someone selling a Luts 2009 Summer Head and ta da! I bought it! 8D I got an AoD body for him afterwards.
I'll prolly buy Lucifer in near future. xD

    7. This has happened to me several times. I have a Souldoll Lupinus head that still does not have a body after one.. has it been two years? o_O I was very glad to get the head as it was already discontinued, and I wanted two of them. However, something else always came up when I had the money for his body.

There have been many occasions when I was planning to buy clothes or other accessories for a doll only to cancel those plans and instead spend the money on a head I found in the MP. Though, lately it has been the opposite as I am trying to save for a specific body, but I keep buying things or one of my newer dolls with my BJD money.

    8. Ahahaha, all the darn time. The number of dolls I've planned and budgeted for and then changed my mind about a month later is ridiculous. It's probably worse that I plan every little thing right down, like what wigs would be nice, clothes, shoes, etc. and include their pricing in my budget. My bookmarks folder is more than enough proof of this, or the bookmark folders that are still languishing on my toolbar in case I change my mind again.

    9. I don't believe in planning, I believe in fate. If the money is there and the doll is right, I will just go ahead and spend away. If the money is there but no doll is right, I'd go look for clothes and accessories. If the money is not there and the doll is there, well, can't get it anyway, better just save. XD

    10. Yes, all the time  Only my first doll was planned for and saved for properly. All my girls were unplanned serendipitous finds on the MP, when I had been firmly telling myself that I was saving for a doll direct from Fairyland. I am a touch of the same mindset as leXis too. If I have the cash on hand and the doll is right then I just go for it, future planning aside. Impulse purchases really throw my character stories for a loop so I'm constantly rethinking everything... But I don't sweat it too much, and it's fun :)

    11. So, has anyone ever gone through with it; saving for one doll and then suddenly deciding to buy another instead?

Yep. But it was pretty fast how mine went. The most recent was the New Year Event from Souldoll. Muse was the original want and Might was second place want. I had characters for both of them. I could only get one. Muse was offered and was very girly but only offered with a male body. I wanted the NL body. So the plan was... buy the Muse head and buy another girl doll with the NL body... sell the unwanted head later. Complicated right??? I got Might instead because it was just easier and I really wanted both. I found DDoll Lia a few weeks later and I love her more than Muse. I'm glad I waited and now I'm getting two instead of one! Lia and Might are going to be my forbidden lovers. Worked out better in the long run

    12. The first doll I planned to buy I still have yet to purchase... I was planning to get a DoC Si and then I ordered Piper on a whim. Then a friend was selling Tamsyn so another friend and I bought her together. Then SOOM had their female choice event and I had no choice but to buy the only SD sized girl sculpt I've ever really wanted - Amber. And finally, I was perusing the MP and found Ellie and bought her on an impulse.

Hahaha Sasha (DoC Si) is definitely next! (I think... :sweat)

    13. I'm in the more sudden decisions group. I spend a lot of time looking at the beautiful photographs of other peoples dolls. I discover wonderful new sculpts [new to me, as I'm just reaching my one year anniversary as a collector so all the dolls were new to me] every day.

I'm still exploring all kinds of dolls and exploration itself is my goal. This year I may move into a more focused search. I guess I could say, at this stage, my plan is to not have a plan. I follow the best opportuities and which dolls I've fallen hardest for has been a surprise to me.

    14. Hmm well this hobby is expensive, and being a poor college student money is a bit hard to come by so I tend to save slowly and really think about my doll purchases. I dont have planned characters I'm trying to bring to life or anything so that makes it easier to just pick dolls I like and not have to worry about fitting them into a story line :)

    15. I don't really plan my doll purchases in any particular order. I have beloved characters, and sometimes a doll comes up that would be great shell for one of them. I sort of have a running list of possibilites, and when I save up money and feel like making a dolly purchase, I go with the character that is available for a reasonable price. I never plan to get them all, so I don't mind which one comes next. <3

    16. It's happened to me a couple of times.. There was this one doll I was on the fence about buying, then I found out he was LE 100. I (sorta) panicked and bought him the next day.:sweat (But I don't regret that! I love him~) Also I was saving up some "in case I find a doll that fits into my plan" money, and I bought littlefee Leah from my friend the same day I found out she was selling her. Again, I don't regret it! ;)

I have a plan, I swear! It's just that there are too many pretty dollies... :doh

    17. My Mariko was originally supposed to be a Doll in Mind Eileen, but then Cherish Doll was having a sale, and I found the Chubby mold to be pleasing, plus closer to a size I wanted. Since I was tied to the concept much more than I was to a particular mold, it all worked out for me. Now she is very firmly tied to her body, and is fun to have around.

    18. I had planned to buy a DoD Ducan as my first dol.... until a MnM Hyde popped up on the MP. I whined for about a hour but I figured I wouldn't see another MnM Hyde for a long time or ever so I bought him :3 And then of course Ducan was put on the back burner for two more years and finally decided that I would buy him with my tax return this year. Probably should've bought him sooner since I'm totally fawning over him day and night like I was with the promo pics but I think I bought him at the right time; my life is getting wonky :/

    19. So, has anyone ever gone through with it; saving for one doll and then suddenly deciding to buy another instead?

As a matter of fact, just this past week! Well, it wasn't really totally scrapping all of my doll plans.

Basically, since last December I've been slowly planning on shelling the first girl character I've ever wanted in doll form. I picked a Chibi Unoa because, well... She was kind of the closest to what I wanted. I've been saving for months, putting money away in a savings account I opened especially for her - and I had it all saved too, ready for pre-orders to open.

And then, last week I completely by chance stumbled upon a thread for an artist doll that literally made me do a double-take - she was SO PERFECT for the character I was intending to shell in a chibi Unoa! Perfect face, perfect stylized body - almost exactly how I draw her! This is literally the first time a squeed after seeing a doll. Even better - she'd take the same size wig and eyes as an Unoa, so all of the things I've pre-ordered for the Unoa would fit her to. So I waffled for about two days, because I was already married to the idea of getting a Chibi Unoa, and already planned out the next several dolls. But I just kept coming back to Raspberry, kept looking at more pictures and realizing more and more than she was just perfect, and unlike the Chibi Unoa, I liked pretty much every photo I saw.... The only thing holding me back was that for the past several months, I've been telling myself that an Unoa was my next doll.

And, well, I realized that's a dumb reason to buy a doll, and so now... Well, whether I'm getting Raspberry still remains to be seen, as her pre-orders aren't even announced, but I know that the money I saved isn't going towards a Chibi Unoa anymore. :) And I think that's ultimately a good thing, because there were things about her that I didn't fully like and kind of made myself tolerate them - but now that I've seen the other one, it seems kind of... silly, really.

    20. I have done that. I wanted my first bjd to be 68cm and from Dollmore. Their prices gave me a guilty feeling because my boyfriend was buying me a bjd as a 2 year anniversary present. After awhile of feeling guilty and realizing how tall she'd be I started looking for SD sized girls instead and found the absolute perfect one at a good price and now I'm waiting to receive her with no regrets. 22. This happens to me all the time. I'll be planning for a doll but then a limited comes out that I fall madly in love with. And this is why half (or maybe more) of my collection are limited dolls ^.^; The problem with limiteds is that you can't wait to get them. If you do, you may not get lucky and find one on the market later. So I don't take the chance and buy the limited and pass up a basic I'd been eying for a long time.

    24. I am a failure in saving any amount of money, so my sort of rule is to buy only what can be paid by what's left of my monthly paycheck (which amounts to $300~). I have been pining for a JID boy, so last month I resolved to save up my previous free money to have enough this month to place an order. And I succeeded. It was only a matter of choosing which I like best.

But lo, a friend posted a Dreaming Doll Airi, which prompted me to browse their Little Elva line, which brought me to Hiro. The $270 free shipping price tag screamed at me so much I placed an order that same day. The thought of being able to buy a doll I like AND STILL buy something else for myself was too much for my pitiful willpower to resist.

I have a feeling I will never get around to actually buying a JID. Maybe someday when my salary increases I will be able to afford one. Or maybe that will be the time I start buying SD's. Plans change indeed. :sweat

I also keep on wanting to redo the faceup on my Soom Amber, however I keep on doing other people's faceups first.

    26. Actually, its happened to me twice. The first time I was saving up for a Blueblood Draven and it was my sophomore year of highschool. My parents were going to let me order him, until they found out his price and flipped, so I ended up not able to get him.
The second time was just recently when I rediscovered blueblood Dolls, and I saw Waltz. I had originally been saving for a YiFeng from Onlydoll, but because there were only 6 sculpts of Waltz left I changed my mind and took the money I'd been saving as well as 100 dollars from my savings and put a down payment on a Waltz.

    27. This is what happened for my twins. Haha.

I wanted my 1st (and 2nd) doll(s) to be my OC twins, but decided I'll never be able to save to buy both at the same time so soon, so instead of just getting 1 twin, I got another character (CP Lishe boy).

Then somewhere between my actual 1st doll and 2nd doll, I changed the sculpts of the twins I want (so it's a good thing I didn't get them last time), and decided to save for them again. Plans foiled when a SDF Bliss with a OOAK faceup came on the marketplace. Then of course he needs a body. And then, finally, I thought, I can save for my twins.

BUT doa marketplace turns up a Volks NS Jina (which was rather rare and I really really wanted a Jina in VOLKS ns rather than the migi ns. Though Migi came out with Volks NS again recently lol), so I got the head instead.

I did get the twins head (FINALLY) before getting my Jina a body.

That was a rather long story :/

    28. So, has anyone ever gone through with it; saving for one doll and then suddenly deciding to buy another instead?

All the time! I admire people who create characters and plan the look, wig, eyes ect. and go through all the saving up and stress until they can finally get the one doll they based their plans on.

Me, I'm bad with plans. I do have a wishlist with dolls I plan on buying but that's it. And if a good offer comes up... like a nice CP El instead of the Luts 08' Wintery I was looking for... then I'll gladly change the plan and get the El first and the Wintery a little later. Which I did, in fact. XD
Or that time when I blew all the money I'd been saving for Dollheart outfits on my Aria Bianca. She's an LE and I figured if I didn't get her then I'd never get her - so I bought her and I am still very happy to have her.

Edit: Hehe, and it was actually cian's lovely Lishe boy who inspired me to buy my El. :aheartbea *blushes*

    29. I'm going through that right now. I had this very clear list written out:

      1. buy MSD and SD boy bodies from Doll Chateau for 2 of my floating heads.
      2. buy SD Jie doll body for my BBD Waltz head
      3. buy Illusion Spirit tan Toki
      4. buy IslandDoll tan Eric

But now that so many of my favorite brands have stopped doing tan resin or made it special request or limited here in the last few months, I'm scared to wait so long on my Eric....the character HAS to be that sculpt, so I'm bumping him up and making him next. I'm not as worried about Toki, since if they stopped tan resin, I could be okay with a different doll for that character. Also, the DC order is going to break me, so I want to wait til Christmas because most of my familiy gives me money for the holidays and it would be WAY easier to buy them that way.

    30. Ugh I am in the middle of yet another doll purge/redo/plan change. It really happens to me all the time, and usually with whole groups of dolls...I was working on a group that had nothing to do with the rest of my dolls, but now I'm finding that I don't have the time to devote to them now...so a bunch of them are hitting the "block". As in chopping. Which will of course free me up to buy bodies for floating heads and a doll who has a body I don't like....

    32. This. This is what I have just done recently.
While initially I was saving for number of MSD sized dolls from my wishlist I have set, I later have realised that having one SD would be better for me. Not only because it will be costly to buy them all same clothes in good quality, because I was considering having about seven of them, but also I simply can't do face-ups myself, which would cause trouble to go through commision for seven heads. Seven heads. And I'm not very patient person to go through that process. I don't want to expand my dolly hobby that far either.
So I changed my mind, and now I'm waiting for my boy.

But leeke discontinued their basics so I ended up buying the boy before any of the two girls. I'm fine with that, one of the girls is on her way, and I love the boy anyway ^^

Since my birthday was coming, I knew I was gonna have enough money to buy a doll, and initially I wanted a Doll Leaves boy Vivian for an oc of mine- but then I got more money than anticipated, and so I wanted to get a Luts bory who not only fit the character better, but is a sculpt I'd always wanted- and then. Then the dollshe sale came about and, since Bernard had always been my absolute grail, I just had to get one. I couldn't afford the whole doll in time, only the head, but I did plan on hybriding anyway. So yes, the happiest ending possible~

I was actually in the process of saving for a new MSD head when I suddenly thought to check my "watched" threads in the Marketplace and almost instantly decided to buy a (much, much cheaper and very old) SD head instead. It turned out to be the best decision ever! She's way more beautiful in person than I could have imagined, and the seller was an absolutely lovely person. It also confirmed for me that I really do enjoy bigger dolls, plus I made a new friend in the hobby. It turns out that head has become possibly my favorite doll, too.

    48. While I do have a basic plan for shelling my characters, it is flexible! I don't mind moving things around on it if a good sale comes along for something that I originally planned to buy further down the line. There are also a couple I'm not sure about the sculpt, so if something else comes up in the meantime, again, I'm cool with moving things around. For instance, I was planning to put a Ringdoll K on layaway this month, but I decided I needed Dollshe Grant Phillippe for one of my main characters so I put him on layaway instead. I'll get K after Grant Phillippe is fully paid.

    49. Plans are like the sea. You can cooperate with them, but never tame them.

The bad thing about veteranhood in the hobby is knowing all the discontinued sculpts that lurk in the cracks. You plan to buy a body. You save and save, and right as you're getting close, the head of that doll you've been trying to get for years appears on the marketplace. Well...so much for the $200 you had. Rise and repeat.

There was a time when I had only one floater. Seventeen heads later, we see how well that worked out.

In my defense, I have bodied or rehomed some of them.

    50. It's a simple change, but it's an expensive one! My Iplehouse EID Jessica was supposed to only have a single outfit for doll meets. She was supposed to be naked all the time because her character's a goddess, but I wanted one outfit so I could keep her decent for meets.

Well, she has one of the most extensive and expensive wardrobes I've accumulated for a single doll...

    51. I kept changing plans for my first doll *_* It went from choosing an MSD doll to an SD, then MSD again and then back to SD... They also all had some similarities so I was pretty much set on the overall appearance for my first doll. Now that I have settled on a specific sculpt, the indecision problem lies within finding the perfect wig colour/style :XD:

    52. I've been working toward a Little Monica Little Demitri for a while now... I've bought dolls from FairyLand, AileenDoll, and DollPamm, but not that Little Monica boy yet. Limited dolls keep jumping in and being perfect fits for my collection, so as a basic he's been repeatedly sidelined. Even now, he's sidelined again while I work toward getting a head I need for a body that's already here, so that I can hopefully minimize resin color differences. Poor boy...

    53. I did this just recently... I was planning to save and hopefully get a hit on a secondhand Aileen Doll Cedric, but then one of my favorite OT dolls that I've wanted for a while went on sale, so I threw plans to the wind and bought him. Cedric will have to wait!

I usually don't impulse buy like that though; it was a special situation, because I wasn't expecting the OT doll to be up for sale. (I don't even know why I got the random urge to check the website!) I generally just save generic doll money, because my plans change a lot. I try to be consistent with my plans as well as I can though, and I don't impulse buy usually, and not at high amounts. I kind of...contradict myself sometimes. :sweat

    54. Yes, this has happened to me! I had saved up the total amount for the Ringdoll Frankenstein release (2nd version if I remember correctly) but they kept delaying his release. A Soom Amber Pure Spirit popped up on the MP while I was waiting for Frankenstein, and she was my grail, so without hesitation I spent every last penny I saved and then some on her :XD: I swore it was fate; in the end I have no regrets I ended up with this beauty instead! :aheartbea
