Sewing An easy way to get patterns for MSD and smaller

Dec 20, 2020

    1. I was going to post in the "What are you currently sewing"-thread at first, but then I realized I had something potentially useful to say, so I decided to make a new thread.
Recently I've been looking for patterns, but googling turned up very little useful stuff. I was looking for a women's dress shirt.
Google and Pinterest turned up barely any doll patterns for the kind of thing I was looking for, however some patterns meant for humans caught my eye. Specifically, some pins leading to a site called Dr.Cos that hosts free patterns. The actual human sized patterns are clearly useless, but the pins themselves have miniatures of the pattern pieces on them, presumably as a preview. Here's an example Tailor Collar Jacket Free Sewing Patterns | Jacket pattern sewing, Sewing patterns, Sewing patterns free. I, in a moment of inspiration, decided to simply print out the preview of some of them. I enlarged them some before printing. Then I cut them out and voilá, I had some pretty decent MSD patterns. I still needed to make fit adjustments of course, and I needed to figure out my own seam allowance (but I would do that anyway because different materials benefit from different seam allowances I think), but what I've tried to sew with the patterns I gained this way is pretty decent.
      Here are some in-progress pics:
Here's the shirt I went looking for in the first place. It's not done yet, but it fits really well so far. I need to add darts, finish the edges and button rows, and also add the collar, but the sleeves turned out great if I do say so myself. They fit exactly as I wanted them to (and I'm still pretty much a novice at sewing).

This is a leather skirt obviously, it's not more fitted at the waist because my order of snaps and buttons isn't here yet, but I think it already looks decent.

Here are the pieces of the original shirt pattern without any adjustments (aside from being enlarged before printing)

And these are my finished pattern pieces (minus one collar bit):

As I said, I had to adjust some stuff, I made the sleeves longer, made some pieces wider, but overall I didn't have to do more that I would've if I used a dedicated MSD pattern, because patterns specifically for this doll don't exist anyway.
The patterns are already free, so they're worth experimenting with I think.

    2. That's a really cool idea! Thanks for sharing!!

You could even cut (and then sew) the patterns out of scrap fabric/ sheets/ muslin at first. That way you could play with alterations/ seam allowances/ scaling when printing and stuff. I'm excited about this. :)

    3. I found a tutorial with tips to turn any (human) pattern preview to any sized doll.

    4. I have SD and MSD I sew for. I drafted basic patterns using instructions for human basic patterns. I'm using original doll measurements and where is a formula, I divided by 3 for SD and by 4 for MSD. It works so far for both of them

    5. Oh man, thats an cool new method! I usually just try to eyeball the sizes on some scrap until it fits how I like. The results you got are pretty good!

    6. Absolutely priceless stuff!!! Thank you very much!
