Theme ALTERNATIVE doll carrier bags

Oct 10, 2012

    1. I see there is already a thread for doll bags, but I want to see options people have found to use that aren't actually made for dolls. So please post your doll bags that AREN'T doll bags!

Here is a bag that I just got--it's a flute case cover. I got it on Amazon for just $11 with free shipping! There is an outside pockets, but it's not very deep--good for maybe a comb and a change of clothes. The inside is really soft and plush. There is a short strap handle and an optional shoulder strap that clips on.

      Only comes in navy blue.

      Nice plush interior--very soft.

Pictured with a 42 cm tall slim mini. There is a little bit of room left, but not much--44cm is probably the tallest doll that would fit. Width-wise there is plenty of room, so a chunkier mini would probably fit fine. Depth is snug, though, so you would definitely want a face protector to keep lashes from getting smashed once zipped.

A couple of slim 27cm girls fit nicely too--plenty of room left for more tiny dolls or accessories/clothes.

      Kitten approved!

    2. Oooh, here is another one I almost forgot I had--this one is a wine bottle gift box! The doll pictured in a slim 27cm doll. A chubbier doll would fit, but without a pillow (or just a thin one). It is made of a thin, but stiff cardboard--you could swing it into things (accidentally, of course) and not damage it or your dolly contents.

    3. XDDD That last photo with the little fingers sticking out is hilarious. I love it!

I saw at Meijer a pencil case shaped like a microphone. It was very well padded, though, and looked like it could fit a Yo at best, or maybe a couple Pukis.

    4. If it's Kitten Approved then it must be good! I like the wine bottle carrier idea - I've never seen that one before!

    5. I LOVE that idea with the wine holder! And that pic with your girl's fingers sticking out is pretty funny. xD

    6. Nice to see that wine-bottle carrier idea. I'd wondered when I'd seen a couple at the local Binny's and definitely something to keep in mind for the ickles. Rikka and I use a bag we got at the local Charming Charlie's. It recently fit 2 SDs (Both Delf) and two MSDs (AoD and Mnf) with only minor finagling (aka, everyone in semi-fetal position), with plenty of padding. We got it because it was just the right size to be able to tuck under the seat when we took the plane to conventions, rather than fussing about the resin in the overhead bin. It's soft-sided, so it was a little harrowing taking it through the airport, but with the shoulder strap, it was easy enough to swing it round to the front and keep it protected.

    7. thanks for posting this ^^ i've been trying to find an alternative for my msd boy to be able to take him to a convention with me^^.
as for my own concoction i don't have pictures as of yet but i got a travel case that has the hard outside shell and is lined with fabric it also has straps on the inside that are made to hold your clothes and what not but i'm going to use to help hold dolls in place ^^ i plan to make pockets on the inside to hold accessories. it will hopefully be really nice for carrying multiple msd's for long distances.

    8. I have used a wine bottle carrier box to carry my Yo-SDs for ages now. Wrap dolly in a piece of fleece, slide into box, and voila! hard safe case. Just keep a close hold of it when moving in public- don't leave it anywhere or someone looking for a free bottle of wine might grab it!

I carry my Puki places with me in a steel eyeglasses case that I have lined with soft stuff. Again, in some areas you do have to be careful about people who might pickpocket or steal it hoping for pricey glasses they can sell, but it does make a nice safe hard-case. I got mine for $3 USD at a thrift shop.

    9. I ought to take some photos sometime, but I primarily use a pair of Craftsman canvas tool bags I picked up a couple of years ago on a black Friday sale.

The smaller one is 12" long, a perfect length for Yo-SDs; I added a foam cushion to the bottom, foam padding around the sides, and some velcro straps to hold two tinies in place there; there's then a pillow and a "false bottom" (a piece of chipboard, though I may change it to a thin board or piece of plastic in the future). That lets me use it as a small handbag in travel; I keep a few things (3DS, wallet, etc) on top, with the dolls safe below.

The larger one is 18" long, so it's a fairly good height for MSDs. I don't have it quite as thoroughly customized as the smaller bag, but I do have a foam piece for the bottom. From there, I use an assortment of shipping pillows and thinner blankets/carry bags to pad and separate the dolls inside. With this, I can carry up to 5 MSDs (three on the base, then a blanket, then two more on the top), or my two SDs (they kind of have to spoon to fit, though, since they're too tall to lay flat), safe and secure.

Both have some little mesh pockets in front, which are nice for tucking a few extra items. I do want to also add a set of shoulder straps to each, to make them easier to carry, but they're sturdy and do the job fairly well when I'm just grabbing a couple of dolls for an outing.

    10. As I mainly carry around giants of 70 cm, I like to use rolling bags. One of these is a sportsbag where I can fit in, depending on the cushioning, up to 3 big guys. Plenty of pockets for all you need.

Another one is an Ikea rolling bag which can also be carried on the back. Here only one big man can fit in a folded-up position, but lots of crafting stuff like fabric on top (this also protects the doll if packed cleverly).

But honestly, for most trips by car I use my Impldoll carrier. Very practical. What I consider a good thing in all of these is a strapping system so that the doll/s cannot wobble around. The Dollmore and Ikea carrier had them already, and I installed some straps into the sportsbag.

    11. I never thought about using Wine bottle carrier, flute case or eyeglasses case for my tinies. That's really good ideas !
I usually use my Cerisedoll bag but its really to big and pink... And every time I'm going out with it i'm not at ease. "Look at me and steal me !" That's what I'm always thinking of my bag XD.

Thank you for the advice !

    12. I haven't tried it myself yet, mainly because I don't travel much with my doll, but I've always wondered if some violin cases might work well too. The ones I've seen would fit a doll and some props quiet nicely.

    13. I use a small overnight bag that looks somewhat like this:

I got mine from Target years ago, but I'm sure there are similar ones around today. I line the bag with some doll pillows, and make sure to cover my dolls faces with face masks. Lugging it around can be rather awkward, but it does the job and I'd rather not spend $$$ on an actual doll carrier.

    14. I have a similar overnight bag from Target. It's perfect for a couple of MSDs, and I've put one SD in it curled up a bit, and an MSD with her. I have a doll burrito and pillows to keep them safe. I could also put in a light doll stand and tucked in a fluffy towel in the top to make sure no one moved around. I do want to get a hard-sided case with a shoulder strap from Dollmore so that I can carry one of my girls at San Diego Comic Con. I want her to be safe from being crushed! I also want to show her off at the bjd panel. ;)

    15. I use a diaper bag for my dolls. Got it at Walmart. ^^
Sorry for the phone pics, I took these a while ago to show a friend how many dolls I could fit into my bag.

I was able to fit a Crobidoll R-Line boy (63cm), a Fantasy Doll boy (60cm), a Delf Mature Type 1 girl (57cm), a LittleFee (25cm), and a B&G Honey boy (28cm). Probably could have fit another Yo size doll and, of course, things in the various pockets.
I could only zip it halfway, but there's velcro on the unzipped end so it's technically closed. I can also fit my Iplehouse SID guy in there with the FDoll boy, and a Doll Family - A Fox (probably could have fit another tiny or an MSD size doll, too). Haven't tried any of my 70cm boys yet.

I've also used a duffle bag, rolling suitcase, and a tote bag (which was technically sold as a trick or treat bag), don't think I have any pictures of those... I know some people who use their doll's box, it's not really convenient, but it works.

    16. A little of what we used to call Thread Necromancy, (Reviving ancient posts)
but these days, you can find very nice hard shell zippered cases supposed to be for portable printers, which can cost $30 usd or so, on places like ebay. A soft lined bag with a tough outer case big enough, if you check the measurements, for many of the smaller dolls!
Also, and I think they have a thread already from like 2018, "ita bags" or pin collector bags have a clear window and in some of them you can take the pin holder piece out and just have a bag with a window in it. Those can be fun ways to carry a doll and show it off while keeping it close on your person at say, a BJD Con.

    17. I almost bought a rifle case. It had a hard outside and soft inside and straps where at least one or two mightve held a doll

I didn't get it cause I wanted it for my big boy and I feared the big naturals would get in the way. Kinda wish I got it now cause my smaller SD's would've been fine

    18. @Vimes I've heard of tripod cases but a rifle case sounds better (actually, can you tell it's a rifle case? that might give a wrong impression :sweat). I need to find a case for 70cm and I wish I had more alternatives :XD:

    19. I use tripod bags for my dolls - the cheap ones on AliExpress and similar sellers are ca €10 and come in various lengths fitting anything from a mini to long bois n girls. Not super roomy and the padding isn't the thickest but one can probably get more plush n space with a more expensive bag :sweat

All sorts of instrument cases and gig bags are also good - violin cases are classic but sax and trumpet bags/cases can be a bit more neutral (if rectangular) and can fit ~SD or a tad bigger (plus they are padded v well to protect expensive instruments!). Shorter synth/e-piano/keyboard cases and bags will fit bigger dolls very well, too. Those types of special cases tend to be a bit $$$ new but sometimes people sell their old ones when switching to a new and more modern case for their instrument for not so much.

If one wants to go extra fancy, some plastic storage box makers also offer padded hard plastic suitcases for fragile equipment. They are sturdy. One can get cubed foam for the inserts and press out the shape of the doll for extra safe travels for instance  there are so many random size hardshell cases made these days that surely dolls will fit into some of those!

    20. The sign said rifle case at cost co. It was like 2 months ago, but I'm might go soon to see if it's still there

    21. In no way cost-effective compared to some of the other options, but I brought 2 dolls to an expo in this killstar bag, and it fit two 65cm dolls, sitting up

    22. I use Yoga mat bags, especially for the bigger dolls. The bags come in all kinds of colors, shapes, lengths and styles. I love them. :kitty2

    23. I love the various options people are using, a lot of them seem really good, depending on your situation. I think better than what I am currently using.

(I use their original box for transport, and also I do have one bag made for BJDs)

    24. large tote bags have been my saving grace for carrying my SD as well as MSDs altogether. My SD never came with a box, so it's really not easy to find different ways to carry him. Sometimes I suck it up and hold him like a baby. In the big totes I sit him down and i can set a MSD in his lap and across from him, their legs between each other. I know I need a better strat but it's what I've got LOL

    25. Being that it's getting to be spooky decor season be on the look out for decorative coffins. I have one that fits two larger MSDs and their tiny children, without padding, one MSD and kids with. Someone else who bought the same thing added some hinges and a handle to make a proper case out of it.

    26. I know I've heard of some folks who use clamshell eyeglasses cases for tinies!

    27. I use a lunch box for my 1/6 dolls. It's not one of the plastic or metal ones, but one of the insulated ones for keeping food cold or hot, so it has the padding all around. I bought it because it's holographic and ridiculously bright, but it really does work. Only fits one doll, though.

Also I have seen people carry dolls in those cat backpacks with the bubble dome.

    28. That's a great idea. Plastic bento boxes come in a ton of different sizes too.

    29. when I had 6 or 7 dolls I had a big bag, like a bag for travel, where you put all your clothes, but it was dolls lmao

    30. I plan to make modifications to this at one point so I can place my Lati Yellow in without fear of ruining her faceup but for now it's the perfect storage case for both my tinies! You can even add a strap to make it a bag~

This was taken at Hobby Lobby when I was checking if she fit and fit she did xD

    31. If you mostly want to transport dolls around 45cm, Cricut carriers work nicely! They’re designed for a hard machine, so you may need to put a piece of cardboard or plastic in the bottom to provide more structure, but the height and shape works well! They frequently have a lot of pockets you can use for accessories and wigs. Mine even came with a rain cover to keep it dry if days get stormy. I’ve managed to fit quite a few dolls in it!
