Wigs Alpaca - What do you use to dye it?

Aug 19, 2021

    1. So I have recently jumped headfirst into wig-making! Straight from processing raw alpaca fiber to now dyeing my own fiber so I can use it to make awesome ombre wigs!

What do you lovely people use to dye your suri alpaca with and what should I avoid?

      Thanks so much!!

    2. Hi, I have used every sort of dye for Alpaca. I found the main focus needs to be washing to make sure the natural oils do not prevent the dye from penetrating the fibre. I find fabric dye the best saturation. I hang the elastic-banded hair from a chopstick and dunk in and out of the hot water so it does not damage the hair too much, then lots of conditioner. At the moment I am using the leftovers from my own hair dye which is a paraben-free organic dye. The colour does not take as intensely but the hair makes it in much softer condition. Repeating the process a couple of times gets great results with human hair dyes. That dye, I use on foil and both brush and massage through gently with hands.

    3. I've used jacquard acid dyes and it words well and actually meant to be used for protein fibers.

    4. Acid dyes are the best :) alpaca doesn't have as much of natural oils (like mohair) so don't use hot water or don't brush it wet. Alpaca takes dye a bit worse than mohair and it doesn't get as vibrant though :3nodding:

    5. I've done alpaca fiber with powdered RIT (not dyemore, just regular old RIT dye) and it works pretty well. You do have to rinse in cold water but the ombre I got was super easy to get and it was a smooth transition.

--the dye was originally done in a cup of lukewarm water and then added to chilled water to keep the alpaca from going all bushy. However, a quick comb and heat-treatment from the straightener and it was good to go!
